Make up on the train: get up ten mins earlier

Just get up ten minutes earlier!! It’s not hard.

You’re taking up two seats. Your elbows are jabbing the person next to you. Your setting spray just hit me in the bloody face. And, even worse, you’ve painted your eyebrows on wonky because you’re on a moving bloody train!!!!

Why do people not get up earlier?!

I used to leave the house about 6:40 to get the 6:52 train to get into work on time, and twice a week after work would go to a class which was about 2 and a half hours, sometimes 3, before getting home sometime after 10.

Eventually I finished the course and moved house so I wasn’t commuting between cities, but for a while, yeah, I used to do my makeup on the train.

I was careful with my elbows and didn’t use setting spray.

was too tired to be bothered with your opinion!

now I just don’t bother with makeup!

It's just so unclassy to apply make up in public.

😂 I've got to say fellow commuters' perceptions of my class were extremely low on my list of priorities, back when I did this every day 😂

I agree with you op - it's personal grooming so do it at home! Also where does it stop? I've been covered in Someone's nail filings, watched people
picking their teeth, cutting nails and don't get me started on wearing hair rollers out and about - or pjs! Not very classy at all!

If the seating arrangements allowed applying my lipstick without infringing on antibody’s space? Sure.

But I think that was my original point (either to you or someone else). The person elbowing and spraying the OP would probably have sworn up and down that she wasn’t infringing on anyone’s space or doing what the OP said she had done.

People are often a poor judge of when their behaviour is infringing on others. You claim that putting on make up etc takes as much arm movement as raising and lowering a coffee cup. Well, it clearly didn’t today - hence the inspiration for OP’s post. That’s why I think it’s probably better to lay off applying make up (and many other activities besides!) when sitting directly next to someone else.

Some people won’t realise and some won’t care.

People sit, drink, eat, read, talk, sleep listen music and also do their makeup on trains.

Some people manage to do all these things without infringing on their neighbours.

some people won’t even manage to sit down without man spreading, elbowing their neighbours, emitting unpleasant odours…

I reserve my outrage for those that actually are inconsiderate and not those that could potentially be (which could be everyone / any kind of behaviour if done without care. Even just sitting).

And I do find it a bit silly (and admittedly patronising) to suggest that those of us who do care about not infringing on their seat neighbours won’t be able to sit, read, drink or apply some lipstick without jostling or elbowing.

the train was strangely empty today so I had a whole “business” compartment for myself.

I had an enjoyable commute and definitely didn’t jostle anyone whilst applying sunscreen, lipstick and mascara. And it wouldn’t concern me if somebody walking by wanted to judge me my lack of class. 😜

I do mine in the train, but in the loo. Usually takes 2 mins max.

Lack of class? You mean first class 😂

My child is profoundly disabled. He doesn’t sleep. He has to be closely supervised every waking minute. His specialist transport picks him up 15 minutes before I have to leave the house and that’s how long I have to shower, get dressed, and get out of the door. Where would you like me to find the 10 minutes?

Well, according to some users I am an absolute slob for daring to apply makeup in public.

Which seems a little judgy. But if it makes them happy….🤷‍♀️
