Make up on the train: get up ten mins earlier

Trainarmrestfairy · 17/06/2025 07:01

Just get up ten minutes earlier!! It’s not hard.

You’re taking up two seats. Your elbows are jabbing the person next to you. Your setting spray just hit me in the bloody face. And, even worse, you’ve painted your eyebrows on wonky because you’re on a moving bloody train!!!!

Why do people not get up earlier?!

Agreed. But I’ve done it before when it was winter and we had a power cut in the morning, my children were a nightmare to get ready that morning because of the excitement of no power

Beetletweetle · 17/06/2025 07:04

I don't do this but I get it. Some people cycle to the station so don't want to put make up on only for it to be smeared when they get there.

Other people have children that wake up at the sound of a pin dropping so have to get dressed in the porch and get out unless they want to be suddenly making breakfasts at 5am as well as trying to leave the house.

AbzMoz · 17/06/2025 07:07

YBA to be bothered about how someone spends their time in a morning or how they apply their wonky make up; maybe they like it that way.
YNBA to object to being jostled or spritzed. Though to be honest a make up brush and setting spray is more palatable vs other things one could be hit with on public transport.

(I appreciate and use public transport, and have been known to dab on some blusher and a swoop of mascara, only at traffic lights/stations though).

This used to annoy me in my twenties* but as I've got older I've mellowed.

Especially since I now live further out with a two hour commute and responsibilities to carry out at home before I even think of myself or leave for work. That being said, I don't apply make up on the train, but it doesn't bother me if others do.

I can't vote as the poll isn't detailed enough.

  • people who are putting make up on, without spraying things and taking up loads of room, elbows and paraphernalia firmly within the confines of one's own seat - not unreasonable and I'm so disinterested
  • someone applying make up, blowing bronzer from the fat kabuki brush everywhere, spraying setting spray, spreading the contents of their bag over the table etc etc - unreasonable

*when I lived five minutes walk from a zone six London tube, and my commute was short and I had all the time in the world at home before getting to my desk for 9am

tuffinmops · 17/06/2025 07:08

I have a 2 year old and I need to get out the house quickly or she’ll wake up . On work days where I’m out the house (thankfully only once or twice a week usually) I’m up at 5.30. An extra 10 mins is a lot at that time!

I do however do my moisturiser and foundation at home as these are the messiest things to do.

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/06/2025 07:10

Depends when the trains run too. Times might not be convenient for getting to work so you factor that in. Id rather not have to deal with the entire Boots counter beside me but a bit of make up application doesn’t bother me. I’d be worried about mascara wand injuries if the train jolted suddenly though..

PashaMinaMio · 17/06/2025 07:12

It’s not an issue I come across because I don’t travel by train anymore but in the past I’ve seen it done.

It’s such a personal activity, I’d feel very self conscious!

Maybe more importantly, think of all the bacteria-ridden surfaces the person has touched before they settle in their seat, then they touch and apply their make-up. Yuk!

ScribblyyGum · 17/06/2025 07:13

It's just so unclassy to apply make up in public.

Notellinganyone · 17/06/2025 07:14

I used to do this when all three of mine were younger. Three kids, full time teaching job and a daily commute. I took up no more space than when I was working on my laptop and was pretty speedy and efficient. I have no issues with it (apart from the spray).

Fizbosshoes · 17/06/2025 07:15

I'm always quite impressed/in awe of women able to do a full face of make up on a moving train with only a tiny compact mirror.

The same can't be said for the man who ate a bowl of cereal next to me and then spent about 20 minutes using a collection of interdental toothbrushes Confused

BallerinaRadio · 17/06/2025 07:16

Ok Judgy McJudgeface there's all sorts of reasons why they might be doing it, none of them to do with you 🙄

Fratolish · 17/06/2025 07:16

I love watching people put on make up - I don't wear much myself so I find it fascinating.

Nobody should be jostling or spraying people with stuff though

ungratefulcat · 17/06/2025 07:18

Maybe train companies could install some make up areas with mirrors etc

I like that people use their commute efficiently, and I think we should encourage anything that gets people out of cars

But I agree I don't want to be covered in the detritus from someone else's makeup session. And it must be very unpleasant for anyone with asthma

DappledThings · 17/06/2025 07:19

I've got up and moved seats before when someone started. It's so irritating and distracting. It's right up there for me with playing music/videos out loud without headphones or eating really smelly food.

It kind of is if they’re spraying the stuff over her.

Clingfilm · 17/06/2025 07:27

I've never understood how this works, where do they wipe their hands, doesn't their top get full of powder, how do you put a whole face on with a compact? It's like decorating a room spying through a keyhole 🤣

Edited

Agree

Some people also have to walk to public transport through the elements or they sweat on their face so putting make-up on only to have to reapply it is silly, but there are always people who can’t think outside of their judgements because it doesn’t relate to them.

Same people moaning would judge someone not looking to their standards.

Is your train really that busy before 7am?

honeylulu · 17/06/2025 07:31

I get up at 5.50am to catch my train to London. No I'm not getting up any earlier, those last 10 minutes of sleep are too precious. Also I'm often rushing to the station, which is up a steep hill so my make up would be a sweaty mess if I did it first. Plus the rest of my family are asleep when I leave so I try to avoid any unnecessary clattering about.

I never elbow or spray anyone though. So I'm going to carry on decorating my face on my commute thanks.

Fundayout2025 · 17/06/2025 07:34

I'm actually impressed when seeing people manage to put on makeup well on a bumpy train / bus / car ( passenger seat)..I have to watch what I'm doing and especially crap with eyeliner so have is tattooed on.

GivingUpFinally · 17/06/2025 07:35

Meh, couldn't care any less about what others do. I'm in my own bubble on public transport for my own sanity. And, I'm currently doing my make up on the train. Just waiting to pull into a stop to do my eyeliner. No one is sat next to and my bag is on my lap.

I am on a commuter train line vut everyone heads to London and I'm going the other way. Loads of room and the carriage may be 30% occupied.

Trainarmrestfairy · 17/06/2025 07:36

@phoenixrosehere train was standing room only by 06:45! And we’ve only just arrived in London.

She put on powder as well as liquid. Her setting spray hit me in the face. And she’s left dirty marks on the table as well from where the liquid foundation ran. Took about an hour for her to do everything

Scrolling tik tok with no headphones, vaping, loud phone calls, putting feet on the seats, putting dogs on seats, vomiting, eating smelly food and leaving rubbish are things that people regularly do on trains that I find very annoying. Why would someone putting on make up bother you? It is about as annoying as someone reading a newspaper and takes up less space.

AMillionTomorrows · 17/06/2025 07:39

Make up is stupid.

She explained in the OP why it annoyed her?

threenaancurrywhore · 17/06/2025 07:40

I find it quite entertaining. Watching someone squirt a giant handful of liquid foundation and rub it all in until their actual face is ghosted out, then they paint over it like decorating an egg. Good people-watching.
