To burn the villa down

We’re staying in a villa in a hillside villa in Cyprus - DH (thank fucking god it was him and not me) went in to top our drinks up and a fucking tarantula was sat in the kitchen. He managed to catch it in the pool net but I am totally freaking out.

is this similar to the one spotter in your villa @Kinkyroots?

That was not necessary!!

Oh God, I loved Cyprus when we went a few years ago and the only wildlife we saw was about a million stray cats

We have the cats - a mum and dad and 5 kittens that I’m feeding secretly who perhaps need to expand their diet. Right now.

When September comes in the UK, I’d drop a heavy book on them (lovely mess to clean up the next day) and one night I had three bloody books on the floor.

Can’t think of a tome for a tarantula though (and then the gloop 🤢).

Someone suggested Indorex on here a few years ago to me, I spray the house in August and never see a spider now.

I may just stay in the pool full time now. Although I read on a Cyprus FB group about someone finding a tarantula drowned in their pool one morning. Yeah, that’ll teach you to try reserving sunbeds you spider fuck.

I love you OP.

I got that eventually! It does help too.

😱😱🤮 who needs warm holidays anyway (thankfully I live in cold Ireland so no snakes either!)

To be fair, I am now rethinking the ‘gorgeous restored traditional villa in the hillside Cypriot village’ vibe I was feeling so gloriously smug and relaxed about. Although as PP said, they get in hotels too. There’s lots of not UK holiday destinations have them I believe. It’s times like this you thank our shit climate and reconsider your retirement plans.

Um … which non UK holiday destinations would that be then? Please tell me not Spain, Italy or Croatia?

atlanta1 · 16/06/2025 22:51

That’s a definite nope for Cyprus 🙈

To burn the villa down
babyproblems · 16/06/2025 22:51

Cyprus was borderline off my future holidays list for this but seeing as it’s also discussed on the WW3 thread with people saying you can see misiles from the Israel/iran conflict in the sky, I think it’s definitely off the list now

Tezza1 · 16/06/2025 22:52

I live near Sydney. To catch a big (non-poisonous) spider, you pop a glass over it, then slide a piece of paper/cardboard under inverted glass and then take spider outside. I have never done this as I am not really worried about non-poisonous spiders. However, small nasty ones like red-backs or funnel-webs, I will spray with fly spray, even though I know I shouldn't.

thestudio · 16/06/2025 22:53

I am mid 50s and I"ve literally spent the decades since I was ten persuading my subconscious that a massive fucking furry spider will not be sitting on my face when I wake up.

I was wrong, Mr Bond.

I will never ever ever go to Cyprus.

Any posters who have experienced furry enormous spiders with the capacity however remot to face-sit please state the location so I can add it to my no fucking hairy hand-sized spiders on my face spreadsheet.

I’m gonna leave it to better, braver posters to do the Goog on those countries. I’m pleased to be able to say our visit to Mexico yielded lizards, agouti, caypu, a small fox and a tiny hippo looking thing in the dark. Despite being writhing in numerous vile spider species.

Imagine flying spiders.

Not helping!!

I mean many posters were asking for pictures, op didn’t manage to get one… it’s a picture of a spider not the actual spider…. 😂

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/06/2025 22:55

Also - the ‘indorex’ spray posters have mentioned stopping them in the house - which one is it? I’m finding flea spray . Does that kill spiders ?

voxnihili · 16/06/2025 22:55

Tarantulas? We’re off to Cyprus in the summer holidays. I’d done a bit of reading about WW3 but was still ok with the idea of Cyprus. Not now though. I won’t be able to sleep with a thought a tarantula could just be roaming around!

Immediately takes Cyprus off the holiday list.

Just burning the villa is very unreasonable.

They used some type of dustpan and brush thing that closed so once it was inside it was enclosed and couldn’t get out, or so DH says, I was too busy rocking on the balcony.

I guess if they are native they are used to it maybe and just put it back outside?

Lucky he didn't throw it out onto the balcony ...

Prior to September, spray it around the edges of the rooms and doorways where they’re most likely to get in. It’s really good.

edit: I’ve not tried actually spraying it directly on to a spider.

I have no current plans to go outside of Europe, but until this thread I had no idea there were tarantulas anywhere in Europe. To think that to date I’ve only worried about mosquitos!

HonoraBridge · 16/06/2025 22:58

OP, I am so sorry. If you are phobic this must have absolutely horrendous for you. I am an arachnaphobe and I feel really ill just reading what happened.

Definitely! I am absolutely horrified by this!
