To burn the villa down

We’re staying in a villa in a hillside villa in Cyprus - DH (thank fucking god it was him and not me) went in to top our drinks up and a fucking tarantula was sat in the kitchen. He managed to catch it in the pool net but I am totally freaking out.

A few years ago I went to Belize on holiday. I’m terrified of spiders but like four-legged wildlife so we were staying in a jungle lodge for a few days. One day we came back to our lodge and I went in first and flicked the light switch. My husband was behind me and just said “stay where you are and don’t turn round”. There was a massive tarantula right next to the light switch. I had almost put my hand on it. He’s usually ok dealing with spiders but it freaked him out. I didn’t sleep for days.

We also went on a night walk there and when you shone your torch off the path you could see the eye shine of hundreds of tiny eyes looking back at you. 👀

It was a very cool trip but I won’t be going back!

Years ago a friend was serving with the RAF in Belize and he said the twats used to happily just walk all over the place, across the road etc etc.

I get it’s their habitat, and I chose to be here but that doesn’t help the visceral terror! The fact that DH was actually reacting made it more so as he literally encourages the big house spiders and doesn’t flinch. We think it was hidden behind the dishwasher, which we’d used for the first time that night.

I'm not very keen on giant house spiders, but I actually quite like tarantulas. I held one once at one of those wildlife parks, that give you the opportunity to do it. The tarantula was kind of pawing at me, a bit like a cat when they're settling down on you. The keeper lady said they do that when they're getting comfy and wanting to sleep, so she took it away before it got too settled. I've had a soft spot for them ever since.

Or it was feeling for a vein and she removed it with a little white lie.....
