Is it normal to feel this homesick?

I have always been a home bird and I love to get back to my home everyday even though I am travelling for work to different cities even when my colleagues are staying overnight at hotels and they have a party, I just come back home on 3 hours each way train rides. I always look forward to seeing my husband and DC who are a toddler and baby.
I can remember for when I was little that I absolutely enjoyed being at home. Even now in my 30s, I just want to be back home.
I have come to New York to see family but I keep missing my home in the UK. I have got my DC along but DH is in UK. It's been 2 weeks and I am so homesick, the trip is for a month.
Even when I go on holiday for 7 days, I start missing home after 4 days and look forward to going back.
My DH thinks I am being dramatic but honestly I miss my home so much even though I might be absolutely loving my holiday and enjoying my time. Has anyone else felt this way or is it just me!

My DH is very easy going and I don't think he has ever said that he misses home. Though he loves to have a lie down and mostly work from home.

I like being at home too. Always can’t wait to get back!

A month is a long time. Is he missing you and DC?

@crumblingschools I hope so, he isn't very good at expressing these sorts of feelings. He does video calls everyday to kids.

I was hoping to get some perspective

@BeKookySheep

If you always feel homesick, what possessed you to book a 4 week holiday?

Fair point, I came to see my family during maternity leave. My family insisted that stay for couple of weeks so they can help with kids.

I feel the same way. Whether it’s a night out, luxury holiday, weekend away I just can’t wait to get home. I was the same as a child and even when I had a dump of a student house, I couldn’t wait to get in to my bedroom and relax. I’ve never been on holiday and thought ‘God I could stay here’. I just can’t wait to get home.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing, but some would hate this.

Astrak · 16/06/2025 20:22

I think that was a Frank Sinatra song.

BeKookySheep · 16/06/2025 20:24

Oh I am so glad to see other people have similar experiences.
I usually feel uncomfortable to admit about my homesickness especially with work colleagues and I had to make excuses to get back home.

No, I’m the opposite I think. I’d almost always be doing something out of the house than just…existing within the same four walls.

MyDreamyRoseOrca · 16/06/2025 20:25

I don’t personally but I’d struggle with an entire month! We’re coming to the end of a three week holiday and I’m ready to go home but I wouldn’t say I feel homesick. Just keen to get back to normal life I guess.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 16/06/2025 20:25

My mind only turns to home when I'm starting the journey home. Even when I'm away for boring work things, I try to get the most out of seeing somewhere new and having free time that's just for me.

But once I'm heading home, I can't wait to get back.

It's not like I am just sat at home. It means doing things in the house or garden. I take my kids out for walk everyday and do other things in the city but it's the joy of coming back home everyday.

I do understand your perspective though @BeKookySheep

If you have a lovely home life, going away sort of upsets the rhythm.

I prefer shorter breaks nowadays.

Vera87 · 16/06/2025 20:29

I am exactly the same

AmyDuPlantier · 16/06/2025 20:30

I guess I was probably more like you when I had little kids, but now they’re old nobody can see me for dust most weekends; I go away pretty often for the day or weekend to follow my hobby and I never wish I was back home.

feelingbleh · 16/06/2025 20:32

I love being at home I think its just a sign that your happy and content in the life you have created for yourself

Notyomama · 16/06/2025 20:33

I'm the same. I am sort of ok with holidays and usually quite enjoy them but my max limit is seven days - I have no interest in being away for two weeks. DH suggested I go away on my own for a weekend to finish a personal project I've been working on for a while and I can't bring myself to book it - I don't want to go away. I'd rather stay at home while he and the kids go away!

Snoken · 16/06/2025 20:43

I'm the same. Love going out, seeing people etc. but if it was possible I would like to sleep in my own bed every night and wake up at home every morning. I have just come home from 9 days or being away and I absolutely love being back. I have had periods of not feeling this way though, and that has been when I have been unhappy with my home life. I am glad I have now created a life that I don't feel like I want a holiday away from.

It's normal for me too, a week is enough for me when we go away, 10 days at a push

Imbusytodaysorry · 17/06/2025 00:27

I think it’s different when it’s someone else’s home . That feels even worse. . I hate it .
I did an air bnb one night at the weekend and couldn’t wait to get home .
I too will travel double in one day just to be back to my own bed and especially to waken up in my own bed .
I did enjoy the last 10 day holiday abroad but that was a really nice hotel
It’s the being in someone else home and not my own I hate . Even as a kid I wouldn’t do sleepovers I wanted everyone to stay at mine .
