To not out sugar in pancakes mix?

ButteredRadishes · 15/06/2025 09:43

Literally have never done it as everyone covers them in sugar/syrup/fruit etc any way.

My DH just realised this and is appalled, he always uses sugar.

He's literally never noticed in 12 years 🤣

Never have either - just flour, eggs, milk.

BendingSpoons · 15/06/2025 09:45

I never put sugar in the mix! None of the recipes I follow add it. If your DH hasn't noticed for 12 years, it can't be that bad.

FaintlyMacabre · 15/06/2025 09:47

Pancake batter does not contain sugar!

Enko · 15/06/2025 09:50

Good food website

100g plain flour
2 large eggs
300ml milk
1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil
plus a little extra for frying
lemon wedges
to serve (optional)
caster sugar
to serve (optional)

Aka no sugar in pancake batter your dh is the weird one.

But now I want pancakes

InMySpareTime · 15/06/2025 09:51

I put a small pinch of salt in mine to counter the sugary toppings.

ButteredRadishes · 15/06/2025 09:53

It's American style.ines that tend to have sugar in (what we have)

I add a bit of sugar for moisture retention so the pancakes are fluffy.

May depend on what type of pancakes one is making.

Sugar is typically required for buttermilk American pancakes and Japanese Soufflé Pancakes, the ones I make:

Flour, eggs, milk. Just so easy to make. Never put sugar in. Only put salt in if I’m making yorkshires or toad in the hole.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 15/06/2025 10:08

American style pancakes I put sugar in. Flat ones I don’t. I wouldn’t be bothered if someone fed me some that did/didn’t contain sugar differently to how I do it, I’d just be grateful that they’d made me pancakes!

Sera1989 · 15/06/2025 10:09

The thin ones can be sweet or savoury so don’t have sugar in. Sugar and lemon was the standard topping when I was a kid so no need for more sugar in the recipe. But my sister was a bit experimental and we had marmite pancakes on more than one pancake day. No wonder I don’t like pancakes as an adult 😂

Wynter25 · 15/06/2025 10:10

I only put sugar on the pancakes itself and milk

EggnogNoggin · 15/06/2025 10:10

I make egg free pancakes and put a little sugar in because the recipe has salt too and they balance eachother and its common in a lot of baking and cooking.

RareGoalsVerge · 15/06/2025 10:10

I never put sugar in the batter. Same batter can be used for savoury or sweet fillings : egg, milk, flour, splash of oil, pinch of salt.

JDM625 · 15/06/2025 10:11

I don't add sugar to the batter either.

jackstini · 15/06/2025 10:11

Well I only have savoury fillings in pancakes, so sugar would be very odd

Would he put sugar in Yorkshire puddings?!

Eta - I also thought it might help with them crisping a little as the sugar burns in the pan?

AdoraBell · 15/06/2025 10:12

I don’t use sugar in pancake mix.

Pancakes aren't meant to be fluffy?!

American pancakes are

Zanatdy · 15/06/2025 10:28

surely no-one puts sugar in the actual mix?

EleanorReally · 15/06/2025 10:30

there is no sugar in pancake mix

soupyspoon · 15/06/2025 10:33

People arent clear on this thread about what sort of pancakes they are talking about. The thin crepe type pancakes which are traditional in the UK = no sugar. Small fatter american style pancakes = sugar.

Pancake clarity is essential for this discussion.

I don’t like pancakes but my partner and son do and they put sugar in the American style ones which they prefer.

Nutsabouttopic · 15/06/2025 10:35

No sugar but do add vanilla extract

Yes.
What people are posting is different batter mixes. When there was a shortage of sugar, or it was too expensive, people would put it in the mix, as said to make it fluffy. Over the years, recipes have changed, during the war pancakes/cakes went egg-less. Salt would go in the savoury batter for Yorkshire puddings etc. It's pointless arguing about it. The point of pancakes was to use what was available. They could be cooked on the go, so every culture has a version.
