To not out sugar in pancakes mix?

Literally have never done it as everyone covers them in sugar/syrup/fruit etc any way.

My DH just realised this and is appalled, he always uses sugar.

He's literally never noticed in 12 years 🤣

I tend to make banana pancakes and they’re sweet enough without sugar!

Mine are small, thick - closer to the American style pancakes.

I sometimes buy pancake mix and I think that may contain sugar.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 15/06/2025 10:44

But don't Americans have sugar in bread and all sorts of other things that don't really require it either? Just because their tastes are different - not because the recipe 'needs' it?

If he’s never noticed a difference in taste in all this time , it just shows he doesn’t need it! He should stop adding sugar when he makes it then lol

Yeah traditionally their pancakes have sugar in them but no you don’t ‘need’ to add it.

Scotch pancakes also have sugar in

knitnerd90 · 15/06/2025 11:00

American ones really are better with sugar in. They are a different beast. Because they’re thick and fluffy you taste the pancake more. They taste a bit flat if you don’t add some, and it helps them brown nicely. I suppose if you really drown them in syrup you wouldn’t notice but I am more restrained!

some pancake/crepe batters have a small amount of sugar, but most don’t.

Ffion56 · 15/06/2025 11:01

Lots of French crepe recipes have sugar or vanilla sugar in the mix.

knitnerd90 · 15/06/2025 11:03

This is what I use for American pancakes. It’s an American recipe but with weights so easy to use.

Pancakes aren't meant to be fluffy?!

The ones I mentioned that I make are.

Literally said it below the part you chose to highlight.

Why ignore context?

EasternStandard · 15/06/2025 11:15

No I haven’t seen a recipe that asks for it either.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 15/06/2025 11:18

Pancakes don’t have sugar in the mix but (posdibly controversial) my recipe for French crepes does.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/06/2025 15:02

I find that the sugar burns if you put it in the mix. I've only ever made pancakes from scratch though, not from a mix.

Never have either - just flour, eggs, milk.

First post nails it

If he's never noticed, it's obviously not necessary, so just carry on doing what you're doing!

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 15/06/2025 15:53

It will burn if you put sugar in

First post made before OP revealed she was talking about American style pancakes, which require a different sort of batter.

ShesTheAlbatross · 15/06/2025 16:12

I put sugar in my scotch pancakes, but I like to eat them with butter on top. I wouldn’t add the sugar if I was topping them with sugar/honey/syrup

YesItsMe44 · 15/06/2025 16:21

Agree there are many varieties due to different times in history. I just have to say just because I'm American it doesn't mean we put sugar in everything. LOL I don't put it in my quick breads (banana, etc.). Made it once and realized I forgot it, so I quit adding it after that. No one has noticed. I make sure the bananas are nice and ripe. One fun thing about baking/cooking is experimenting when you don't have an ingredient.
