LIGHTHEARTED!
When hanging out the washing I always hang tops from the bottom and then any trousers/skirts from the waist.
Dh thinks it should be the opposite way.
AIBU to think that I'm right?

I’m with you OP! I always do the same. I find they don’t crease as much.

GammonAndEgg · 14/06/2025 19:53

My very wise mother used to say, “If you wear it on the top, you hang it from the bottom. If you wear it on the bottom, you hang it from the top!”

lazyarse123 · 14/06/2025 19:55

You're right unless the tops have spaghetti straps.

I hang T-shirts, shirts etc on clothes hangers, it saves ironing. Trousers I hang upside down as they dry quicker that way. Skirts I usually clip into one of those clip clothes hangers (again, saves ironing as it drys the way it’s supposed to hang).

Clearly you don’t have much wind where you are!

Every time I hang the washing I remember a thread saying they’d been taught this by their granny or some such, and my response then is the same as now - I hang each garment up how best works for it.

minisoksmakehardwork · 14/06/2025 20:01

Always! It was drummed into me as a kid by my mum, grandma and neighbour lady. Also, double pegging so you’re joining one item to the next with one peg to save on space and pegs. I only don’t do that with trousers as I find the waist bands dry better if I don’t.

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/06/2025 20:01

I hang trousers from the cuff. It makes sense to me. The thickest part of the garment (the waist band) is not squished up in the pegs, and it also acts as a kind of weight to help straighten out the legs. I hang tops from the bottom too.

RunningNananananananananana · 14/06/2025 20:02

Tops by their bottoms and bottoms by their tops 👚👖

I hang shirts etc (the stuff that goes in hangers) in a window opening so it gets a breeze. But no I don’t hang my cloths on hangers outside in the wind. Only towels, sheets etc

notmyrealnameok · 16/06/2025 18:29

Tops definitely from the bottom. Bottoms by one leg!!

Watto1 · 16/06/2025 18:32

Pretty much everything by the bottom. I like the waistband of jeans /trousers/pj bottoms to be able to flap around in the breeze so I hang them by the feet.

No you are right and your husband is some sort of psychopath!

Mymanyellow · 16/06/2025 18:34

Tops from bottom, bottoms from the top.

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 16/06/2025 18:34

I’ve always done this…it’s common sense isn’t it? I’m in my 60s and learned this from my mum…who in turn was taught this by my gran (who was an AWESOME lady so must be right 😂)

Mymanyellow · 16/06/2025 18:34

Hate having to share pegs too I’ve got loads.

GenerousGardener · 16/06/2025 18:40

Absolutely OP. A very long time ago I was in the Army, we were taught to hang washing out this way. Also to wash everything inside out. I still live by this mantra.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/06/2025 18:44

Hanging trousers inside out allows pockets to dry quicker.

Neighbours just drape things over the communal washing whirly gigs, letting things blow to the floor...

Hankunamatata · 16/06/2025 18:45

Both from bottoms

B0D · 16/06/2025 18:54

I think you are correct, but don’t always follow my own advice!

ninjahamster · 16/06/2025 18:59

Hang from the bottom. Both tops and trousers. The trouser waistband is the thickest part so needs to be free to blow in the breeze.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 16/06/2025 19:01

I start out with tops by bottoms, bottoms by tops and then go out and turn them over after about an hour. I only get the sun in one side of my garden and I like my washing toasted on both sides, so if I have to turn them round, I might as well turn them over too.

Yerroblemom1923 · 16/06/2025 19:04

My OH hangs trousers by the bottoms and it winds me up no end! T shirts, blouses etc from the bottom and trousers skirts from the waist band. We use clothes pegs as hangers would blow off the line!

No pegs ? That's madness !
