LIGHTHEARTED!
When hanging out the washing I always hang tops from the bottom and then any trousers/skirts from the waist.
Dh thinks it should be the opposite way.
AIBU to think that I'm right?

I hang everything from the waist, just as my mum taught me

Bryonyberries · 16/06/2025 19:10

I do same as OP. Although I hang dresses by their shoulders.

Ponoka7 · 16/06/2025 19:53

I hang everything from the bottom, so the waistband dries. Any other part that is a bit damp can be iron dried.

MrsClatterbuck · 16/06/2025 20:12

I hang tops and bottoms from the bottom. Only exception is when I hang trousers using a trouser hanger like the ones you get in shops. Some tops are also hung on a hanger. I use plastic devices I got from Lakeland which you attach to your line and then you can hang a hanger from them.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 16/06/2025 22:16

Both from tops here, despite what my mother says my tops have never been stretched/misshapen because of this.

Cannedlaughter · 16/06/2025 22:56

Waistbands , pockets , seams etc take longer to dry as there is extra material. If you double that over the line your making it thicker so will take even longer to dry.
turn trousers inside out so pocket inners are loose and hang from the bottom so waistband gets more air too it.
tops you hang from the bottom for similar reason

uncomfortablydumb60 · 16/06/2025 23:55

I hang everything from the bottom. Jean's waistbands dry better that way
Always wash and dry everything inside out too

BangersAndGnash · 17/06/2025 00:00

Much better to hang jean’s from the bottom.

The heavier waistband keeps the legs straighter and more crease free, the thicker waistband, pockets etc dry faster because they are blowing free.

Wibblywobblybobbly · 17/06/2025 00:03

If you peg tops by their shoulders you end up with marks on the shoulders and they look weird and mishapen.

Conkerjar · 17/06/2025 00:11

My garden is very shady and full of critters that bite me if I hang my clothes out and then wear them. I'll ask my dryer what it does. Though when I did have a line, I'd hang everything by its thinner bit, ie the leg cuffs for trews, or they would never dry at the waist.

IJWMM · 17/06/2025 00:42

I mostly follow this mantra, have done for years. IHave some summer dresses that are non-iron and they go on a hanger at the hooks on each corner of washing line.

Any coloured clothes get washed and hung inside out - lessens the risk of being bleached by the sun - had a couple of T-shirts end up looking weirdly tie-dyed otherwise. Whites, obviously, go the right way round to take advantage of sun bleaching.

Always! It was drummed into me as a kid by my mum, grandma and neighbour lady. Also, double pegging so you’re joining one item to the next with one peg to save on space and pegs. I only don’t do that with trousers as I find the waist bands dry better if I don’t.

We called double pegging where you put twice the number of pegs on so it doesn’t blow off in the wind!

bridgetreilly · 17/06/2025 01:25

Both from the bottom. To avoid peg creases on the tops, and to give waistbands more airing.

NewbieSM · 17/06/2025 01:51

No I hang tops from the top with the pegs on the armpit seam. Don’t your tops end up all stretched from hanging by the hems?

ApolloandDaphne · 17/06/2025 05:30

I hang tops folded lever the line and peg under the armpits. I turn them round to ensure they dry quickly. That way I don't get peg marks on the bottom of my tops and they stay nicely in shape.

I live on the north west coast and there's no way any hangers would stay in those with even our usual wind let alone anything stronger.

k1233 · 17/06/2025 05:55

I hang it all from the bottom. Waist bands are thicker than hems, so dry better when not folded over. Tops can get holes in the shoulders from being hung up from the same spot. I find the peg spot varies when hung upside down.

Only folded clothes get pegs. Anything that gets hung up in the wardrobe is on hangers. I keep the hangers in the laundry as clothes are worn, so always have the exact number needed to hang on the line.

Tops definitely from the bottom. Bottoms by one leg!!

That's very left-field, hanging them by one leg 🤔 I'm intrigued, and will give it a try 😀👖

Sparklehead · 17/06/2025 06:03

I tend to do tops from the bottom and bottoms from the bottom, so basically everything upside down. But I also really dislike hanging washing out - possibly my worst chore. So, on some days, I just drape lots of the garments around the garden, over the bench, garden table, swing etc (and hope that no one visits unexpectedly that day!) but most of the time, I get my DH to do this chore who is the neatest person ever and hangs everything beautifully.

heavenisaplaceonearth · 17/06/2025 06:07

Trousers from the waist so the thickest bit is at the top and the moisture falls downwards away from the waist band while drying.

Shirts right way up from a seam at the top so they don’t stretch, and inside out to reduce fading.

EleanorReally · 17/06/2025 06:16

that is what i do
when dd hang up the washing they do it so wrong!
i need to remind them

Wannabegreenfingers · 17/06/2025 06:17

Tops i peg under the arms otherwise you get visible peg marks that don't iron out. Bottoms always from the waist for the same reason.

Me too Same with trousers/leggings.

Wheelz46 · 17/06/2025 07:09

I peg from the bottom, including trousers.

It made for a great conversation when a friend of mine bobbed round saying you should always hang trousers from the waist, she reckon they dried much quicker that way.

So my next load, I put 2 pairs of jeans in the wash and positioned them on the line together, both in the sun, one pegged by the waist and the other pegged by the bottoms. Pleased to say my way dried quicker, the waistband was still damp pegging them by the waist.

She now follows my lead much to the horror of her mum 😆

Clearly you don’t have much wind where you are!

My washing would be all round the neighbourhood if I hung it out like that too
