Can I paint neighbour's wall?

Neighbour's garage backs onto our side, so the pebbledashed grey wall forms part of the fence. There's fencing on either side of the garage wall, which is fine, but the wall is an eyesore.

It's at the bottom of their massive garden and they hardly ever venture to it.

It also happens to be directly in front of our kitchen window, so it's all you see when looking out.

I could plant on our side, but the space between our kitchen and their wall is paved, with a slither of free ground.

Would it be U to paint the wall a lovely appealing colour or plant ivy or such?

DH says not to, but I'm thinking a compromise might be us asking the neighbours, but is it rude to ask?

It would be wrong to just do it, but no harm in speaking to them about it.

FionnulaTheCooler · 14/06/2025 10:15

I'd ask them. If it was mine I'd be fine with you painting it, not so much with the ivy. Paint would be easy enough to paint over, ivy is a pain in the arse to get rid of.

Vanillalime · 14/06/2025 10:16

Perfectly fine to ask the neighbour for permission to paint the wall.
YWBU to paint it without permission, your husband is right on this one.

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 14/06/2025 10:19

Can they see that side of the garage from their property at all? If not I would just do it.
My conservatory wall forms part of the boundary with the neighbours' garden. I don't care if they paint it purple, I can't see it.

ArtTheClown · 14/06/2025 10:19

Sorry I know I should probably stfu but it's sliver, not slither.

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/06/2025 10:22

No not without consent.

NewBinBag · 14/06/2025 10:23

Definitely not rude to ask!

'do you mind if I paint the wall that we can see from our window?'

Can't think of an objection TBH.

pimplebum · 14/06/2025 10:25

its his wall and you can’t touch it , if he allows you then fine all good

ivy can be invasive and you could open yourself up to expensive repair work claim same goes for banging in nails or painting with incorrect paints that don’t breathe as they should
you must seek permission
it’s his wall and considered criminal damage

BethDuttonYeHaw · 14/06/2025 10:26

Definitely ask.

SilverMoonSliver · 14/06/2025 10:26

Don't plant ivy! It takes over and becomes a huge never-ending maintenance job.

It's worth asking the neighbours about painting it.

Other options are plants in pots/long narrow planter with trellis. Or something like bamboo screening, with plant pots along the bottom of the wall.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 14/06/2025 10:29

There's a window that's not in use and not see through.

You can’t paint it without their permission. No harm in asking. Painting probably wouldn’t bother me but Ivy would be a no.

They can't see it at all, and the rest on their side is tastefully done.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 14/06/2025 10:32

Ask them.
If they say no then get some long planters with trellis and grow stuff up the trellis.

Mingenious · 14/06/2025 10:35

If they can’t see it I’d probably just do it.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 14/06/2025 10:36

Thank you all, will go round and ask.

Maybe not rude as such, but meant as in them thinking it's common sense to just paint it seeing as they can't see it, so doesn't affect them, so why bother asking.

OP posts:
Whaleandsnail6 · 14/06/2025 10:37

Ask them and if they say no, could you plant climbing plants in long planters with trellis behind? Thats what we have done to hide a fence with paving in front of it

AndOnThatTree · 14/06/2025 10:39

kate Lawler (big brother, radio presenter) did exactly this recently to the back her neighbours she’d, it didn’t go well and is actually a criminal offence. You’re not unreasonable to ask but don’t just do it.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 14/06/2025 10:39

Previous owners planted a couple of climbing hydrangeas but they only cover a section of the wall and only seasonally.

Should we also mention these?
Worried they might aks for them to be removed.

@Treesandsheepeverywhere Please don't plant ivy, this spreads everywhere and will damage pebbledash.

foxgloveswaving · 14/06/2025 10:47

I don’t know maybe speak to them?! It’s very rude to just do it.

foxgloveswaving · 14/06/2025 10:48

Arent you the same poster that wanted to chop the tree without asking?

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 14/06/2025 10:49

Thank you, I won't plant ivy, I'll definitely ask.
Just always the risk of someone saying No just for the sake of it, hence tempting to paint as they won't see it anyway.

Kate Lawler painted her neighbours shed - it was the back which the neighbour couldn’t see. Her neighbour kicked off and many people were really offended that she did it.

It’s all on her instagram if you’re on that platform.

Best to check with your neighbour first!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 14/06/2025 10:51

Many people? Wow, that’s social media for you. Why did they all care so much?
