Can I paint neighbour's wall?

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 14/06/2025 10:13

Neighbour's garage backs onto our side, so the pebbledashed grey wall forms part of the fence. There's fencing on either side of the garage wall, which is fine, but the wall is an eyesore.

It's at the bottom of their massive garden and they hardly ever venture to it.

It also happens to be directly in front of our kitchen window, so it's all you see when looking out.

I could plant on our side, but the space between our kitchen and their wall is paved, with a slither of free ground.

Would it be U to paint the wall a lovely appealing colour or plant ivy or such?

DH says not to, but I'm thinking a compromise might be us asking the neighbours, but is it rude to ask?

The nice part faces us.

I think the poster meant north/east/south/west

Oh, duh 😅, my bad. It faces North.
Thanks.

We had similar in our garden, asked the neighbours and they were fine with painting it. Changing the drab grey wall, to bright white, with some Mediterranean blue painted furniture on our side has transformed that part of our garden to one of the nicest parts.

😁 Jasmine is fine for north facing. There’s rector rose too but they would take longer to establish. Sure other posters will be along with other lovely suggestions.

They can't see it at all, and the rest on their side is tastefully done.

Why not suggest to them that you use the same colour.
Emulsion or shed paint? Will it look OK on pebble dash?
On the other hand forgiveness is often easier than permission.

Yep, using the wrong kind of paint is a BRILLIANT idea!

As others have said, have a conversation with the neighbour and take it from there

Meetmeundertheclock · 15/06/2025 07:41

OP, I am curious. I have a garage in a garden that is pebble dashed. What kind of paint is recommended? I presume you would spray?

Thank you, was having a gin moment 😅.
Will try this in pots.

Their side is clad in beautiful expensive looking timber, which they can afford but we certainly can't.

No idea yet, once we've spoken to the neighbours we'll get what they recommend, if they agree.

@Meetmeundertheclock true, except if they don't forgive..... spoke to our other neighbours yesterday and apparently pebbedash neighbours are big shots but lovely.

Sorry Trees, I posted a link to a smaller one, there are 6ft tall ones.

SamDeanCas · 15/06/2025 09:21

I’d have no objection to someone painting my wall. I’d be bloody annoyed if they didn’t ask though. Just courtesy to ask

DizzyWaltzer · 15/06/2025 09:25

If you ask your neighbours about painting it, they may offer to pay for the work & materials. You may get lucky. It’s their wall after all. Certainly I would in their position.

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 15/06/2025 09:26

My garage has a wall in neighbour’s garden. It would be a flat no from me. If they don’t want to look at it they can put a fence up.

Ultimately I am responsible for maintenance and upkeep. I would be pretty annoyed if I had to fork out to fix something because a neighbour had damaged my property because they felt it didn’t look nice from their side. Painting a garage can cause damage if it’s not done right. It can lead to moisture ingress and mould. Wouldn’t even entertain the idea of ivy. (Speaking from experience at a previous property where neighbour did both - landlord’s problem that time luckily!).

I think that approach would result in me instructing a solicitor, and the law wouldn’t be on your side. Bad advice unless you’ve got money to throw away on legal fees and then having to restore it to the way it was before.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 15/06/2025 10:33

Thank you @Slatterndisgrace just been looking at those.
Had seen some on amazon but as most things, older versions seem to have been more robust, with newer ones flimsy from what reviews are saying.
Will go to the garden centre.

I bought one from Amazon recently. Think it was about £90. The reviews were all good. 6ft x 3ft wide.

Thanks, searched in your price range and found some. £300 before factoring in the plants, so will try the paint option first.

Can I paint neighbour's wall?
Treesandsheepeverywhere · 15/06/2025 14:29

Thank you @Slatterndisgrace ,
Meant I need three of them to cover the width of the wall, hence the £300.

PP said they might offer to cover the costs though🤞🤞🤞😅.

I’m from Australia so pardon me if I have no idea how much things cost in the UK. Paint and hiring a paint spray gun is very expensive here. If cost needs to be kept low and neighbour agrees to you painting the wall consider applying the paint with a large sponge. It would take a while but would be much easier than a brush or roller because of the pebble texture. And it would be much cheaper than hiring a paint spray gun.

Thank you @ImustLearn2Cook , it is a big area to cover. Hadn't looked at prices but will definitely go with the cheapest option.
