To not heat my dinner plate?

Jaggy1 · 13/06/2025 20:27

Just a silly one really..

My MIL has been coming to us once a week for a little while now. Every single time we have dinner whether we serve up or she does, even if we get a takeaway she always asks if I want my plate heated? Either with boiling water or in the oven if it’s being used. I just think it’s strange as I’d never do that on a random Tuesday night dinner or anything but she does it all the time 🤣
Also weird that DH never asks or cares for his plate heated any other time but he’ll always have it when she’s here.

Is this a thing? Am I the strange one 🤣
YABU- you religiously heat your plate
YANBU- never heat your plate

Eh? What has cold gravy got to do with being racist?!

Nothing.

Seems like we've found MN's new bunfight topic.

If you put hot food on a cold plate it’s pretty obvious the food is going to cool down. A roast dinner on a cold plate? No thanks? It’s not a generation thing - it’s common sense!

If you put hot food on a hot plate it’s pretty obvious the food is also going to cool down. You cannot change the laws of physics.

Another reason why i hate inviting the in-laws round. Both fussy eaters (and they have the cheek to comment on the kids) and they moan if the plates are cold.

My family never cook the plates

"Cook the plates" is funny.

"Just a couple of minutes in the air fryer!"

OldElpatso · 14/06/2025 09:17

My dad always wants a warm plate, my mum is less bothered.

I bought him an electric plate warmer for Christmas one year, my mum said he uses it every day! It is like an electric blanket for plates!

DanceMumTaxi · 13/06/2025 22:02

I always do. Dd and I had pizza tonight and I popped the plates in the microwave for a minute before I served up.

Absolutely pointless!

How much heat from your warm plate do you think is going to transfer to the presumably sizzling hot toppings through a pizza crust?

Lazygardener · 13/06/2025 22:17

I've always warmed plates. Luke warm food is truly horrible.

Lots of food tastes much better once allowed to rest.

EndorsingPRActice · 14/06/2025 09:21

I heat them at the weekend and for smarter meals and guests (unless it’s a lot of guests and I don’t have space to warm them in the oven.) Never done the boiling water thing, would get stressed with that I think as they must surely need to be dried too. But in a hurry after work in the week, rarely think of it or do it. The DC moan if food is too hot as well…

Yes we like our food rested too, for the most part. But then we like it to stay at optimal temperature for as long as possible whilst eating, so we warm (not heat!) our plates to facilitate that.

Wouldn't do it for pizza though, and we don't have to do it for pasta anymore either since we got lovely thick pasta bowls that conserve heat very nicely.

Lighten up Beth! It's just a chat about gravy and cold food 😂

Anyway, to my fellow warm food fans - I would highly recommend getting a plate warmer. Best investment I ever made!

WorkingNotTwerking · 14/06/2025 09:24

I think I might need to get one; I enjoy cooking and entertaining and could do without an extra chore when everything's coming together. I also want to get an old fashioned hostess trolley for the dining room!

RedRosie · 14/06/2025 09:38

Warm, (not scorching hot) plates for hot food here. Not sure it's generational exactly, more something that runs in families.

You lighten up. You're the one who doesn't get the joke.

My husband won’t eat any hot meals unless the plate has been heated first.

@Growlybear83

i bet he would if the alternative was to starve

Beautifulspringsunshine · 14/06/2025 09:58

It a generation thing nothing to do with class/ poshness. Kitchens wouldn't have heating in the past and crockery would be stone cold particularly in the winter. It was practical to keep your food warm. Some people do it, some don't 🤷‍♀️

I feel very light, thank you!
You're right, I really don't get the joke. I thought jokes were meant to be funny?
Anyway, nice chatting, have a great day! 😘

Why is it a total faff? You only have to put the plates in the hot oven for a few minutes. If the oven isn't hot, you put them in the microwave for one minute.

My mum doesn't have a microwave 🤭 but yeah I guess if someone did and was that way inclined it wouldn't be so much.

Wow, so if you don't understand a joke, or don't find a joke funny, it is objectively not funny.

The arrogance of you!

Quite possibly but it’s unlikely to happen when he can heat his plate in the microwave for a minute before I dish up our food.

Well I’ve never eaten a piece of broccoli yet that tastes better rested and cold.Confused

Jamfirstest · 14/06/2025 10:40

Dp and I are evangelical about plate heating for takeaways. The kids think it’s bizarre.

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 14/06/2025 10:44

Can’t stand it. My dad comes round and I always get a huge 30 minute lecture about how it’s essential. Then a big show and dance about putting the oven on for the plates and then the dinner is late (my fault) because of cold plates that haven’t had any attention.

have three small children and even if I didn’t I don’t give AF about plates

Cooked broccoli is minging, try it raw 😋
That's said I wouldn't put raw broccoli on a plate.

Exactly cooking the plates is just another stress to add to cooking a meal.
Well seen it's men that want hot plates - go to a blinking restaurant!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 14/06/2025 10:52

I’ve not seen it done in homes for years.
