To not heat my dinner plate?

Just a silly one really..

My MIL has been coming to us once a week for a little while now. Every single time we have dinner whether we serve up or she does, even if we get a takeaway she always asks if I want my plate heated? Either with boiling water or in the oven if it’s being used. I just think it’s strange as I’d never do that on a random Tuesday night dinner or anything but she does it all the time 🤣
Also weird that DH never asks or cares for his plate heated any other time but he’ll always have it when she’s here.

Is this a thing? Am I the strange one 🤣
YABU- you religiously heat your plate
YANBU- never heat your plate

My mum does it, but I never do it otherwise. It wouldn't cross my mind to.

My mum heats them up so much though, that you find yourself almost dashing to the table with your loaded plate, before it burns your skin right off!

We’re fortunate enough to be able to afford central heating so don’t need to warm plates.

Cooked broccoli is minging, try it raw 😋
That's said I wouldn't put raw broccoli on a plate.

No thank you.

No thank you.

I kind of knew that hot plates would be a fussy eater thing.

"Raw broccoli! The very thought of it!!"

People who are desperate to be disgusted by food, for some reason.

I never warm the plates, infact I usually dish up and wait for a few minutes before serving because I enjoy it more if it's not piping hot.

The only thing I've not tried raw is cauliflower.

But your so right hot plates is a fussy eater thing.
I swear the ILs are more fussy than the kids. One won't eat rice, one won't pasta, they moan about cheese sauces, then moan about tomato sauces having tomatoes in them.

Even worse than her faffing about with heating plates is my MILs insistence on plates and cutlery for eating a fish supper. The eye brows getting raised when you use your fingers...you have to just treat it as funny and enjoy winding her up or you'd go mad.

Oh yes, we definitely had to eat fish and chips with cutlery. I still do it now, although I don't often have chips with the fish, so make myself a salad instead. I don't mind eating chips with my fingers, but definitely not fish.

I never heat my plate, but I seem to be in a minority of not liking my food to be scorching hot, or my tea. Maybe my mouth is sensitive.

I hate it when restaurants bring out kids food and say the plate is hot so be careful. Why is my 6 year olds plate scorching hot?

Eddie16 · 14/06/2025 15:14

My gran does this, the plate has to have steam coming off it for her to deem it hot enough.
In restaurants, she complains to the wait staff if her plate isnt hot enough for her liking, plates should be served with a side of tea towel and food should be served quickly as well as cooked.
She also likes her coffee extra hot, if she could get away with putting her mouth under the coffee machine and pour the water in, she would.
She has burned her mouth numerous times and given herself mouth ulcers all because food and coffee have to be HOT!
At 86, I'm putting it down to a generation quirk.

I always do it. I’m not putting hot food onto cold porcelain. I like my food properly hot

I am exactly the same as your gran and I’m 40 years old. My parents weren’t like this it’s just me!
