To think shein is actually good?

Always been sniffy about any fast fashion (never knowingly bought anything). Have lots of stuff going on over the summer. Spent 100s +++ on different outfits from various labels. Now desperate so gave Shein a try and the outfits look really good. As a tall woman it’s unusual to find stuff that actually fits well.

How does it get to you? Are you ethically choosing something 2 miles down the road you can walk to collect?

or is it in a location miles away which is then transported to you via car then a van then another courier? All for one ‘bargain’ item off Vinted?

And this is the other lazy argument - unless you are living in a cave knitting your own clothes out of nettles, then you should not be criticising.

I love Shein, also Temu. The variety is brilliant, never had any quality issues. I've ordered clothing for myself and my children as well as home items, never disappointed. I've got some beautiful summer dresses to wear from Shein.

The variety comes from ripping off small designers from other websites.

I've had some gorgeous summer dresses from Shein that I've been wearing for years now and get compliments on them every time I wear them. Infact most of my work wardrobe is also from Shein. I buy most of my children's clothes from there too.

Please think carefully about your children’s clothes from there. They may contain toxins and illegal chemicals.

and please never buy jewellery from there. The lead and illegal metals content is huge.

I’ve got one ace charity shop one mile away and another five 10 miles away in the village my children’s school is in.
got a £120 nobody’s child dress for £7 two weeks ago.

I would really like to know where the ethical brands are. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to buy things that aren't made in China. As other PPs have said even the so called high end shops don't seem to be that fussy where their stock comes from.

Practically everything is made in China.

sideeyes · 14/06/2025 13:02

I very much believe in buying secondhand if possible. It’s not uncomplicated though: there’s an argument that in creating this market for used clothes, it makes those people who buy new clothes feel less guilty about their consumption (as they find it more morally justifiable to pass on loads of clothes to charity/sell them on Vinted than say, finding themselves having to physically put them in a bin). Just a thought.

You are wasting your breath/typing time. All people care about is that it's cheap.

bringbackthespira · 14/06/2025 13:16

I love shien!
and not afraid to admit that 99% of my clothes are from there.
quality is fine, no different from what you would get on the high street.
would I like to be able to hop into Zara or river island for a summer wardrobe?
yes!
can I afford to?
no.
I see things that I like, upload to photo to shein and get a replica.
im pretty sure those up in arms are all living pure lives!
second hand shops are great for a browse, and I’ve had a few good bargains, but who wants to shop for clothes in a shop that smells of old people?
judge all you like, there’s poverty literally all over the world

Buying cheap clothes gives me more money to spend on UPF's to feed my children.

You upload someone else’s design to shein. So that person loses their design copyright?
think about that for a minute.

if your skint your skint. I get it. I don’t have Zara money either so it’s charity shops, and sainsburys for knickers and basics. I do go to factory sales of things like lady v and boden.

ShowOfHands · 14/06/2025 13:40

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 14/06/2025 10:43

Where do you buy your clothes and ‘bits’ from then??

all those who promote Vinted as a good way to be ‘ethical’….what about all that extra packaging and then of course there’s a van delivering a skirt….and then another zooming up the road just to deliver an over wrapped pair of trousers, then another and another…..

not convinced it’s more ethical at all…

Not sure why you even asked me @YouWillFindMeInTheGarden if you've assumed I buy from Vinted. Which I don't.

And I don't buy "bits". When I say "bits" I mean when people say breezily 'oh I went on shein for some dresses and got some lovely kitchen bits and things for the dc and some other little bits and pieces as well. 15 items and only a tenner.'

Bits seems to mean "stuff I don't need".

No, Shein don't do requests to tailor make items. You upload a pic of an outfit you like and it then searches for similar stuff they already sell.

NightIbble · 14/06/2025 14:10

I do get occasional bits from shein as they have a really good plus size section and a lot of high street retailers eirther don't go up to my size (22) or the options are expensive and frumpy.

Calliopespa · 14/06/2025 15:45

I think I’d rather clothes that “ smell of old people” ( what a thing to say…) than risk clothes that smell of toxic chemicals and child labour

tammienorrie · 14/06/2025 16:00

clothes that “ smell of old people” - what does that even mean? I am a dedicated charity shop shopper - things just get run through the washing machine.

TheLudditesWereRight · 14/06/2025 16:15

Yep that was pretty revealing

France just voted to regulate the likes of Shein FWIW with a ban on advertising and high import taxes 👌

WreninaDarkNook · 14/06/2025 16:42

I love Shein. As others have said, it is by far alone in its environmental issues and exploited workers. The more expensive brands are guilty of this too.

The thing for me is the unusual designs. I love clothes, fashion and unusual patterns and cuts. I wouldn't know where else to look for some of the quirky things I've had from there.

I can live with myself ethics-wise.
I don't eat any animal products
Most things I own are second-hand
I drive an old car.
I never fly.
Being vegan alone means my carbon footprint is hugely reduced.
Shein is my only 'vice' when it comes to ethics.

It's definitely not just that It's cheap, for me. I could buy cheaper clothes in a charity shop or on vinted I am sure.

If you would like to be shocked out of shopping here again, please watch BUY NOW on Netflix.

An absolute eye opener and honestly made me feel sick to my stomach.

Just watched this and it was truly shocking! 😮

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 14/06/2025 16:55

Not buying clothes from Shein is one of the simplest and easiest ways I have of claiming moral superiority over random strangers and affords me a cheap ego boost by denigrating their choices.

FedupofArsenalgame · 13/06/2025 16:08

Is it any worse than Primark?

The quality is better than Primark on the whole.

NormasArse · 14/06/2025 17:02

I get lots of good quality stuff in charity shops for what I imagine is a similar price.

Disturbia81 · 14/06/2025 17:06

Only had success with shein, and love the unique style of everything. But mainly it’s affordable

I think you are right. I honestly like the clothing from there and that is the main reason I buy it. The fact that children's clothing is cheap is a bonus as they grow so quickly, you aren't spending a fortune on things that they hardly get any wear out of.
