I want to use washing powder only due to cost of softener but am worried it will ruin my clothes. What do you suggest?

I've not used anything other than washing powder for 15 years. Don't notice the difference other than I don't spend my days itching like I did when using softener. I absolutely hate it when I can smell fabric softener or fragrance washing detergents on other people. It often makes my nose tingle and my face itch.

This is me and my youngest son I stopped using it, only use non bio, no more itching.

I just use powder, I think softener is unnecessary and kind of stinky. We don't have hard water though so perhaps that makes a difference. I don't like pods either, just washing powder.

Discovered Formil washing powder well DH did. It's non bio, unscented. No itching. Available at Lidl.

Haven’t used fabric softener for years, waste of money.

Washing powder and soda crystals because we live in a hard water area so they mean I can use less washing powder and the washing machine is supposed to gunk up less.

I meant to say, I use a spoonful of soda crystals with the washing powder, too. I'm also in a hard water area, and my clothes definitely aren't 'crunchy' 🙂

MoistVonL · 13/06/2025 04:58

I never use it because it’s bad for the machine.

LongRangeDessertGroup · 13/06/2025 08:06

We’re in a hard water area but because I’ve never used softener my clothes just feel like clothes to me, I can’t say I’ve ever noticed they’re crunchy or scratchy. If I want to smell nice I use perfume, if the softener has a strong fragrance doesn’t it clash?

After a childhood of hard towels I use softer. Not every wash but certainly for towels. I've towels that are soft that was my dream as a child.

HighlandCowbag · 13/06/2025 08:13

I use Persil washing powder and whatever fabric conditioner is on offer. I've tried pods and liquids but they just don't get things clean enough and cost a lot more. And also not as easy to adjust the dose. If Im just washing a small load, like white school shirts I only use half a scoop for instance.

Clothes always smell nice. I did stop for a while, as DH has psoriasis and wondered if it would help. It didn't, and loads of socks developed holes.

Our stuff gets quite dirty as well. DH is a builder, we have ponies etc. Use the longer settings and a tumble dryer in winter. Apart from the odd shrinking from the tumble dryer, clothes last and last. Currently sat in a pair of riding tights that are about 4 years old and worn at least once a week and they don't look worn or faded.

@depressed394 a friend years back told me I used to much softener. (She said it made the clothes lank ) I cut back as I realised she was right and a big bottle of fairy softener lasts me forever now.

I quite like the scratchiness of a towel that hasn't had fabric softener on it. This probably makes me some sort of a weirdo.

I do too 😁It's like exfoliating.

DS1 hates it but he can put as much softener as he likes on his towels when he lives in his own house. Until then, it's scratchy towels all the way.

SALaw · 13/06/2025 08:23

No but I live in Scotland with our soft, soft water

Screamingabdabz · 13/06/2025 08:27

Powder is enough. Nobody needs to use fabric conditioner. It’s a completely unnecessary non product that wastes resources.

Plus people who use it stink. It makes my stomach turn when I buy stuff off vinted and they’ve used it. It doesn’t matter how much Vogue Williams strokes her soft white blouse it smells artificial and not clean.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 13/06/2025 08:30

I don't use it in every load because it affects the absorbency of towels and dishcloths etc. I don't use it in sportswear washes either as it wrecks the wicking ability. I do use it in normal loads but I use half the suggested dose.
