I want to use washing powder only due to cost of softener but am worried it will ruin my clothes. What do you suggest?

I never use softener. It's got horrible stuff in it, it's unnecessary and it's bad for the washing machine. And don't get me started on 'scent boosters'. People can be so gullible!

I haven’t used softener in years and never noticed a difference to my clothes except they don’t have that vile smell that comes with softener.

I wish Vinted had some sort of search filter for sellers who don’t send stuff that stinks of it.

Ha me too! I received a top today that I could smell before I even opened the bag!

PashaMinaMio · 12/06/2025 19:07

I use Aldi powder. Whites & colours so separate boxes.

I very rarely use softner. Hate the synthetic smell.

I might use a tiny bit if I wash anything that gets “static” . Nylon full length petticoats (yes I wear them under unlined dresses) or fleeces.
Stale softner makes washing machines stink.

I’ve only ever used washing powder, never softener, I actually really dislike the smell of softener. I can’t see how it would ruin your clothes?

Same here

Did you not notice the array of other laundry products in the supermarket and wonder what people do with them?

You beat me to it!!

FourBlackCats · 12/06/2025 19:10

Powder only for me. Can’t stand the smell/feel of softener and have stopped shopping on Vinted for this reason.

EscargotChic · 12/06/2025 19:17

Washing powder and soda crystals because we live in a hard water area so they mean I can use less washing powder and the washing machine is supposed to gunk up less.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/06/2025 19:18

No, never have. It smells too strongly.

Knnniggets · 12/06/2025 19:29

I quite like the scratchiness of a towel that hasn't had fabric softener on it. This probably makes me some sort of a weirdo.

Yes I definitely don’t put it on towels

Haven’t used softener for years now because of the plastic waste and the fact that it sticks to your clothes and younger DD’s skin is sensitive to strongly perfumed stuff.
I don’t find it makes any difference.
I use powder and liquid pods and find very little difference in softness between them.
The most important thing is to not use too much detergent and make sure it’s rinsed off well.

Bridport · 12/06/2025 20:33

I don't use softener and when I stay in AirBNBs I can really tell if they use it.
The last one I stayed in had used some kind of peachy softener and that combined with the air fresheners everywhere was unbearable.

TheFairyCaravan · 12/06/2025 20:40

I use powder and either Comfort Pure or Fairy softener. I don’t like the crunchy feeling of clothes that have been washed without softener.

Newname71 · 12/06/2025 20:40

I use powder and softener. I’ll
only use yellow comfort or blue Lenor though because I love the smell.
I’ve tried cheaper ones when I’ve had less money but they just don’t do it for me!
Im a dental nurse and a patient came in the other day and said “ooh it smells lovely in here” That’ll be my scrubs 😊

Needspaceforlego · 12/06/2025 20:48

I use powder, liquid or pods. I've taken to using Persil colour and what i really want is a big box of Persil Colour powder (which i might order from Amazon)

I stopped using fabric softener years ago when I didn't notice much difference.

I used to always use Persil, then decided to try Daz because it was on offer. It brought me out in hives that took multiple Doctors appointments, antihistamines and a doze of steroids to get rid off.
Hence scared to try anything else again

GentleIron · 12/06/2025 20:53

Nope. I just use a washing powder, sometimes with a dash of laundry disinfectant if washing something a bit ripe, and definitely no fabric softener. I don't like the smell or the texture of fabrics when softener has been used; if I get a parcel containing a garment from eBay, it goes straight in the wash to get rid of as much of the smell as possible. My DC love the scentedness and I feel a little bad for them like I'm depriving them of a nice thing.

MainSailWaves · 12/06/2025 21:20

Never used softener

I use washing powder because I read on MN that it’s more effective than capsules or liquid.

I don’t use conditioner unless I’m washing hand knits and I don’t think my washing is not soft. I don’t like my clothes, and therefore me, smelling of conditioner. We live in a hard water area but have a water softener.

Yes! The 'talk to me about laundry like I'm an idiot' thread? I learnt a lot!!

stayathomer · 12/06/2025 21:27

Have always felt softener was a luxury! Only ever used powder!

Katemax82 · 12/06/2025 22:02

sharpenedroof · 12/06/2025 14:06

I've only ever used washing powder and until I read this thread I genuinely didn't realise anyone used anything other, or in addition to, washing powder.

Why would there be such a huge range of fabric conditioners available if no one used them?

GingerLiberalFeminist · 12/06/2025 22:09

We use washing powder, it's more cost effective. I use a "yellow" softener, usually Tesco own as I like the smell. The key to making these things last is use measuring cups. We had a plastic set from pound shop, one is in the powder box.

Never used without so can't tell you sorry

HollyBerryz · 12/06/2025 22:29

I use powder with a bit of washing soda and white vinegar in the softener drawer, my washing smells of the wash powder.

DiscoBeat · 12/06/2025 22:32

Me too! But the rest of the family grumble so I still don't use FC but they are the only thing that always go in the tumble drier, even on sunny days.

TheChosenTwo · 12/06/2025 22:33

I switched to powder so I didn’t need to keep buying those stupid awkward plastic boxes of the pods. Stopped using softener when I realised it was leaving a film on my clothes and causing those weird grease spots on certain things. We also wash things like sports wear in almost every wash and you shouldn’t use it on those anyway. And I’ll bung a towel in to make up a load sometimes and you shouldn’t use it on those either.
I do miss the smell of softener though, I actually like a bit of a fragrance on my clothes.

TheChosenTwo · 12/06/2025 22:34

Oh and most bits do get tumbled so they get soft in there anyway.
