Has David Walliams finally wrecked what was left of his career?

He was part of the taping of the xmas special of WILTY yesterday and did a Nazi salute twice, as "comedy"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvg59q1xgv8o

At least the show immediately told him that it was utterly unacceptable and the BBC and production have also condemed him immediately, rather than this coming to light in a few years time.

Combined with this and also being booted off BGT for the way he spoke to contestants, surely there's no way back for him now on telly?

David Walliams' Nazi salute on Would I Lie To You unacceptable, BBC says

The children's author and comedian made the gestures during a recording of Would I Lie To You?

100% I agree.

Terribly is a negative word, that derives from the term terror, meaning horror, unpleasant, nasty.

If a white person would have sat on a television set and said what she said in reverse, they'd be arrested, not work again & be completely disowned by any colleagues too.

You’ve never heard something described as ‘terribly nice’?

cardibach · 12/06/2025 20:48

Underthinker · 12/06/2025 20:47

It doesn't matter if David W is a nice or horrible person, or if his earlier work is great or crap. If we get outraged to the point of cancelling panel shows over a nazi salute, it very gradually narrows what we can laugh at. Next time it might be a nicer person getting cancelled for something less extreme than this.

I’m comfortable with ‘Nazi salute’ being on the ‘let’s not employ this person any more’ side of the equation.

I don’t find cruelty amusing. Never have. You don’t need to be sorry I hated it. I’m more than fine with that.
Could have done without having to deal with teenage girls repeating it failing to realise they were the butt of the joke (Vicky Pollard) though.
Nothing funny about privileged people laughing at ‘poor people’. And that’s before we get on to the hideous men-only expensive dinners he used to speak at where the teenage waitresses spent the whole night being groped.
Awful, unfunny person. I don’t know how anyone can see the video of how he used to treat the young men on stage in his stand up and think he should still be in the public eye.

I enjoy David. I think he’s funny. I also know that comedy tastes vary and some may not agree.

That’s okay.

Some of these comments about David could libellous. I wouldn’t wish anyone to be sued.

I’m afraid if we keep cancelling comedy shows, we would never find anything humorous.

We need to laugh. Life is sad enough.

You understand power dynamics?

I understand racism and just because someone is more wealthy and powerful than you it doesn't mean it's okay to be racist towards them.

I love to laugh. I just don’t find, racism, sexism, ablism, and misogyny very funny. They are, in fact, some of the things I need comedy to recover from

Of course. We just disagree on whether it was racist I guess. It was a comment regarding race, obviously. That doesn’t automatically make it racist.

Seriously? Doing a Nazi salute for attention (not as part of a mickey take of Nazism) and you’re ok with that?

I really feel like we cannot put today’s clutch your pearls mentalities on comedy that was twenty years ago. In their podcast, David and Matt both say that they couldn’t do it now.

I thought their comedy was funny. They took the piss out of everyone regardless of class. You cannot please everybody.

Choose a different comedian. It’s that simple.

I think David was calling Nazis wankers. They are. I don’t think he is a Nazi.

Not everyone is going to like you. That’s okay.

I am sure that David is hearing from his Jewish friends or people in his orbit.

I know he has depression and I just feel that this could affect his mental health (mental health is important).

If you’re insensitive about mental health, that’s on you. You could be libellous by making those comments on here.

They weren’t funny 20 years ago, but I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about his recent performances and behaviour. And no, he wasn’t calling Nazi’s wankers. He only did the wanker sign the second time and they were talking about waving, nit Nazis. On the basis of what people have said, he was suggesting the injury was caused by a salute or a wanker sign. Unfunny and pretty unpleasant (and yes, I know the injury wasn’t real).

Edit: I don’t think he’s a Nazi either. I think he’s an attention seeking twat who doesn’t care who he upsets and who thinks everything he does is hilarious. It’s not.

You don't seem to understand racism at all if you think some of the most powerful and wealthiest white people in the world can be victims of it.

It's great you're so passionate about fighting racism though, I'll look forward to going back through your old posts and seeing all the times you spoke up when racism directed at black people over and over and over again has occurred. Because you certainly won't be one of those idiots who think 'reverse racism' is a thing and are only interested in 'protecting' white people from it.

You could just choose a different comedian. Simple as that.

They are not releasing the footage, and we haven’t heard what happened when they weren’t filming. You don’t know what conversations were had behind the scenes. Perhaps Rob had a conversation with him afterwards or even today. Maybe Matt (being raised in the Jewish faith) had a conversation with him.

I think people are dog piling and it’s almost on libellous territory.

I think this thread has taken a personal and nasty turn that has nothing to do with Walliams’ behaviour.

Have a good night all.

Most entertainers are attention seeking. It’s part of their job.

it’s okay not to enjoy David. Really, it is.

Just don’t be libellous. That would suck.

@JasmineAllen i disagree, that statement is not racist. It is a true observation.
Wealthy rich white people's don't experience racism.
Nor do WC white people, they experience discrimination, not racism.

You just proved yourself racist by including a reference to colour...how does someone's colour influence if they can be victims of racism. Gypsies are predominantly white but are victims of racial abuse. Jewish people. .White muslims???

I don't know about "for attention", I expect he did it because he thought it was funny.
Yes I'm OK with it. Lots of comedians, politically left and right, have done them over the years as part of a joke or sketch. I might need someone to spell out to me what the actual problem with it is. My suspicion is that some of the offended people don't actually know why they're offended, but just feel they should be.

It’s an observation. You’re aware of the usage of ‘terribly’ for ‘very’ right?

This sub thread is actually quite funny. The poster’s mis-reading of the word “terribly” is pure comedy. A bit like an old Ronnie Barker sketch.

I'm one of those people who thinks anyone can be racist whatever their race, wealth or level of privilege and likewise anyone can be subject to racism.

I'm not passionate about fighting racism but if I see it, or hear it I'm going to think/say that's racist.

Feel free to have a look through my boring old posts. If you have any tips on lowering cholesterol I'm all ears.

I know this is completely missing the point, but the Xmas special of WILTY is filmed in June !!!!! 🤯
I mean I knew it wasn't live but for some reason I thought it would be filmed in a bit closer to Xmas like in November 😂😂

House of Games Christmas special was also filmed this week. Catchphrase Christmas special was filmed in May.
