Has David Walliams finally wrecked what was left of his career?

itsnotabouthepasta · 12/06/2025 11:32

He was part of the taping of the xmas special of WILTY yesterday and did a Nazi salute twice, as "comedy"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvg59q1xgv8o

At least the show immediately told him that it was utterly unacceptable and the BBC and production have also condemed him immediately, rather than this coming to light in a few years time.

Combined with this and also being booted off BGT for the way he spoke to contestants, surely there's no way back for him now on telly?

David Walliams' Nazi salute on Would I Lie To You unacceptable, BBC says

The children's author and comedian made the gestures during a recording of Would I Lie To You?

I hope so.

I use the wanking gesture 😂

I’m sure there are those that wouldn’t love my humour. That’s okay. There are people that do.

I’m sure that David is having many conversations about what happened. We’re just speculating on these news reports.

Good PR for this Christmas episode!

And the Nazi salute? Do you use that?

TheKindPlumHelper · 12/06/2025 19:35

Nahh…I’m quite satisfied with the wanking gestures.

She said the royal family was 'terribly white'. That does sound quite racist

It’s an observation. You’re aware of the usage of ‘terribly’ for ‘very’ right?

I don't think you can cancel someone for a bad joke. That's a very worrying slope to start sliding down.

Joke?

There you go then. It’s the Nazi salute that’s causing the issues.

Yes, this is where I’m at with it too, tbh.

The description doesn’t sound like he was glorifying Nazis. As other PP have said, there’s a long history of mocking Nazis and their followers.

Same with the sexual gesture, which I presume was wanking. Plenty of comedians have used this in a routine (male and female).

Comedy isn’t supposed to be sterile or sanctified. And it’s ok if it offends some people. There are types of humour I find really unpleasant and offensive.

I think we’re losing sight of the idea that even dark, terrible things can be mocked with humour. You don’t have to like it or find it funny.

Also, I absolutely fucking detest David Walliams. He’s creepy, sleazy, and misogynistic. I probably wouldn’t even have found this gesture funny - but I think cancelling him (again) over this is excessive.

Shake Jerk Off GIF by HannahWitton

Yep, as we can see with this gif. Women often use the gesture to mock men. People need to remove the pole from their backsides. Wanking gesture is probably the least offensive one there is.

Deadringer · 12/06/2025 19:40

It's not even that it wasn't funny, humour is subjective, or that is was offensive, it was so damned repetitive. How many times can you laugh at the fake disabled bloke getting out of his wheelchair behind his carer's back, you might find it funny the first time, but every time?

If David’s poking fun of Nazis, then I’m fine with it.

I need more context about what he was thinking. None of us know that.

It may have been repetitive, but at the time, I laughed every time.

He wasn’t poking fun at Nazis though. That’s the problem. He just did it for attention, with a side of suggesting a fellow panellist was a Nazi.
Just doing a Nazi salute does not equal poking fun at Nazis.

That is what was stated in the articles. Media spins things to suit a narrative. Tabloids, most definitely. People dogpile…

I am sure there were conversations held behind the scenes. Let’s just wait to see what happens.

I know that Rob and David are good friends. Perhaps, there were more conversations that we did not witness. Maybe David will hear from Jewish friends and have those conversations.

Maybe he will apologize.

You can easily find another comedian, but I think it’s truly disgusting to dogpile and hope that his career is over.

cardibach · 12/06/2025 20:03

I hope his career is over because I think he’s shown himself to be an arrogant misogynist. I see no reason to doubt the account that the Nazi salute was random and not part of a joke poking fun at Nazis.

That’s your opinion. You have a right to think what you do.

Have a great day. 👋

It’s an observation. You’re aware of the usage of ‘terribly’ for ‘very’ right?

Of course, but it's not usually used as a positive 'very'.

Imagine if someone had described her family as 'terribly black'. They, quite rightly would have been criticised, especially if they then said well, you're aware of the usage of 'terribly' for 'very' right.

SpidersAreShitheads · 12/06/2025 20:28

I was pondering on this further today.

I’ve obviously not seen the clip but I guess the humour in using the Nazi salute is manifold.

Firstly, it’s the idea of making the Nazis a caricature, as has been done in countless comedies before. The idea that they’re taking part in a dancing show (which was the subject being discussed) makes them look silly.

And then there’s the humour in suggesting that a perfectly lovely person would break out into a spontaneous Nazi salute. It’s the suggestion of the ridiculous that makes it funny, plus of course the shock value. Pretty much the same for the wanking/sexual gesture. It’s the fact that it would be insanely out of character and out of place in a dancing show that provides humorous context.

I’m not saying I would find it funny. I’ve not seen the clip so I don’t know. I said earlier that I don’t really like David Walliams so probably not. Wouldn’t rule it out though.

I just don’t think using a Nazi salute within a humorous context is unacceptable. It might not be suitable for a mainstream BBC show and that’s understandable. But I can see it has a place as edgy humour and I would always defend that, even if it’s not something I find funny myself.

What is unacceptable is Elon Musk bashing out a Nazi salute-type gesture to whip up support from voters on the political right.

A comedian mocking Nazis and making inappropriate suggestions in the name of humour, I can’t get worked up about.

I loved Anne and Andy.

You never knew what Anne would do, and it was just funny. Again, you couldn’t do it now.

In what way was laughing at disabled people funny exactly. I was training to teach when it was big. Hated every second. It encouraged cruelty. It was always punching down and that is never funny.

100% I agree.

Terribly is a negative word, that derives from the term terror, meaning horror, unpleasant, nasty.

If a white person would have sat on a television set and said what she said in reverse, they'd be arrested, not work again & be completely disowned by any colleagues too.

I don’t know why. I just found it funny.

I’m sorry that you hated it.

GrammarTeacher · 12/06/2025 20:42

I don’t find cruelty amusing. Never have. You don’t need to be sorry I hated it. I’m more than fine with that.
Could have done without having to deal with teenage girls repeating it failing to realise they were the butt of the joke (Vicky Pollard) though.
Nothing funny about privileged people laughing at ‘poor people’. And that’s before we get on to the hideous men-only expensive dinners he used to speak at where the teenage waitresses spent the whole night being groped.
Awful, unfunny person. I don’t know how anyone can see the video of how he used to treat the young men on stage in his stand up and think he should still be in the public eye.

You understand power dynamics?

Underthinker · 12/06/2025 20:47

It doesn't matter if David W is a nice or horrible person, or if his earlier work is great or crap. If we get outraged to the point of cancelling panel shows over a nazi salute, it very gradually narrows what we can laugh at. Next time it might be a nicer person getting cancelled for something less extreme than this.
