Did anyone else feel rage at Karen Millen's comments on breastfeeding?

According to Karen Millen (who is, notably, a clothing designer and not a child development expert), breastfeeding beyond six months has no benefit for the child, is selfish, and is a sign of addiction.

You're not allowed to get it right as a mother, are you? Bad if you don't breastfeed but also bad if you breastfeed for too long, apparently.

God knows why Karen Millen was being asked for her opinion on the subject in the first place 🙄

It was so icky and the apology today wasn’t good either they needed to emphasise the guidance, the benefits but she just kind of reiterated herself. Disappointed.

BatchCookBabe · 11/06/2025 17:56

I didn't feel rage, because I (mostly) agree with her. Not necessarily that it's an addiction, but that there's no need to breastfeed babies past 6 months.

Beetletweetle · 11/06/2025 17:57

'extended' breastfeeding reduces breast cancer risk. Good addiction to have

OnePearlJoker · 11/06/2025 17:57

Rage because someone asked her opinion? No, I don’t feel that way. I wouldn’t even let this bother me. People have opinions on everything I simply can’t go around choosing to be offended by everything I hear and disagree with. It would be exhausting.

MondeoFan · 11/06/2025 17:57

Yeah why was Karen Millen in particular being asked. Sign of addiction after 6 months I don’t think so. More reasons for people to get enraged with breast feeders

HeyWiggle · 11/06/2025 17:57

She sounds like a plonker

RampantIvy · 11/06/2025 17:57

Who on earth are the 11% who think YABU?

HeyWiggle · 11/06/2025 17:57

And not very bright

Why?

HRTQueen · 11/06/2025 17:58

Why would I care what a clothes designer says about breast feeding

AnnaMagnani · 11/06/2025 17:58

Am honestly more shocked to discover Karen Millen is an actual person, not a shop.

endofthelinefinally · 11/06/2025 17:59

I get so annoyed about so called "celebrities" giving their ignorant and ill-informed opinions about anything outside their own area of experience. It is so irresponsible and damaging. How dare she? What a stupid statement.

Other than that it is better for the baby and the mum and is encouraged by the World Health Organisation.

Pollqueen · 11/06/2025 18:01

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's a really odd attitude to breastfeeding in England.

Get your tits out for the boys, great, crack on. Get them out to feed your baby, eugh, disgusting! And I very much include women in this weird attitude

FinancialWhines · 11/06/2025 18:03

"Designer" is stretching the truth a bit.
She made lycra footballers wives clothes twenty years ago.

ThejoyofNC · 11/06/2025 18:03

Well she was asked for her opinion and she gave it. Not sure what's particularly engaging about that.

So what do you do after six months?

Many babies are not yet ready to be on solids at the six month mark and switching to formula has its own set of problems. There’s also the WHO who recommend six month exclusively of breastfeeding and continue along with solids for longer.

It was just bizarre, babies shouldn’t be given solid food before 6 months and milk will continue to be their main nutritional source while they’re learning to eat, so spouting the idea that they shouldn’t be breastfed beyond six months is actually quite dangerous. The idea that she thinks she knows better than the World Health Organisation, who recommend breastfeeding to age two is clearly ridiculous, but comparing a breastfeeding baby to an addict… I just have no words for that level of stupidity….

Why was this woman, who clearly has no idea what she’s talking about, being asked about this in the first place?

DearMartha · 11/06/2025 18:09

The clip came up on my timeline and I had no idea who it was. What absolute crap she was spouting. Embarrassing stuff!

Cocomelonhauntsme · 11/06/2025 18:10

I first saw the clip out of context and had no idea who she was. I assumed she was one of those Katie Hopkins-wannabes who deliberately rage bait to get attention because her explanation of why she disagreed with it felt incoherent so I dismissed it as someone saying something to get social media views and thought nothing more.

However, finding out she's a well known designer actually made it more unfortunate. She's not race-baiting this is what she thinks. She's a mother surely she has access to the same information we all do. I et choosing not to breastfeed/ being unable to but thinking that it's selfish past 6 months (well below WHO recommended guidelines) is insane to me.

There might not be any ‘need’ but there are loads of benefits.

OverpricedCupcake · 11/06/2025 18:11

What an idiot.

LostMyPantsAtGatwickAirport · 11/06/2025 18:12

I didn’t feel rage, I thought she came across as really stupid!
It’s well known to have benefits to mother and child for as long as breastfeeding happens.
If people are going to spout stuff like this it should always be balanced with researched facts, because this could be damaging to young women still making up their minds about whether to breastfeed or not.

Due to personal circumstances I fed one of mine until he was 5. Reckon Karen would faint on the spot 😂

There are multiple sources, but here's a succinct bit of info:
