Did anyone else feel rage at Karen Millen's comments on breastfeeding?

According to Karen Millen (who is, notably, a clothing designer and not a child development expert), breastfeeding beyond six months has no benefit for the child, is selfish, and is a sign of addiction.

You're not allowed to get it right as a mother, are you? Bad if you don't breastfeed but also bad if you breastfeed for too long, apparently.

God knows why Karen Millen was being asked for her opinion on the subject in the first place 🙄

Even her apology was bollocks…..she was still spouting off that there’s no benefit to breastfeeding past 6 months even though the science clearly states that breastmilk loses no nutritional value at any point 🫠🫠🫠

Mind your own tits Karen 😑😑

I didn't feel rage, because I (mostly) agree with her. Not necessarily that it's an addiction, but that there's no need to breastfeed babies past 6 months.

What do you base this opinion on?

Children don't turn six months old and immediately switch to three meals of solid food a day. Milk remains their primary form of nutrition until they're one, so they do actually continue to need milk.

I get so annoyed about so called "celebrities" giving their ignorant and ill-informed opinions about anything outside their own area of experience. It is so irresponsible and damaging. How dare she? What a stupid statement.

But surely that will apply to anyone? I’m not a dentist but I have an opinion on how shit turkey teeth look and wait lists. I’m not a teacher but I think they should be paid more. We would live in a very small bubble if people only give their opinion on something they have experienced or do as a job. Karen Millen is a mother so why shouldn’t she have an opinion on breastfeeding? You don’t have to agree with it but that was her opinion. Life is going to be pretty miserable if you take issue every time you disagree with someone. Who cares what she thinks?

How is there ‘no need’ to breastfeed babies past 6 months? So did you just stop feeding your baby any milk at 6 months and then not give cows milk until 12 months as per the current guidelines? So just no calcium etc for your kid for 6 months? Eat the pureed broccoli or starve?
Or do you mean that you gave formula between 6-12 months? In which case surely you agree that babies need milk at that age. So do you suggest that mums stop feeding their free organic breastmilk at 6 months and switch to costly formula and buy a load of bottles? Do you work for Cow & Gate or something? Supply chain manager for Boots maybe?

Oneofthedays · 11/06/2025 18:21

I saw a clip from the interview and also didn't recognise her. I'm not sure we need to take advice on how to feed our babies from a has-been clothing designer.

Congrats to her for getting a few moments of fame again, I guess, I'm assuming that was her aim.

Idiocy, I think.

I don't feel rage, I just wonder why I am supposed to find her opinion in any way relevant.

Allswellthatendswelll · 11/06/2025 18:25

V depressing when breastfeeding rates are so low in this country to have such misinformation.
WHO says up to 2. Lots of evidence that in traditional hunter gatherer societies it's up to 3+. It's the most natural thing in the world!

LittleMonks11 · 11/06/2025 18:26

Wait, there’s an actual Karen Millen person and she has breastfeeding views to share with the world?

I care because giving credibility to someone making unequivocally false and judgmental statements about breastfeeding is harmful. KM isn't saying 'as a mother I didn't want to breastfeed past six months', which would be fine and something she's more than entitled to say. She was making untrue claims about something she has no expertise in, which is quite different.

We already have dismally low rates of breastfeeding in this country and someone getting to spout this ignorant bollocks on television is only going to perpetuate the stigma and make women continue to feel self conscious about it.

Irrelevant person with irrelevant views running an irrelevant business selling irrelevant clothing, struggling to be relevant. Or just noticed at all. Sad.

Am honestly more shocked to discover Karen Millen is an actual person, not a shop.

DKNY is Donna Karen - an actual person. As are many designers. Why is this a shock to you ?

Not liking the appearance of someone's teeth after they have cosmetic dentistry is not the same as perpetuating misinformation.
Breastfeeding is absolutely necessary after 6 months for a breastfed baby. She may chosen not to breastfeed, as is her right, but that doesn't mean there's no need for anyone to.

So, you just give them milk from a cow’s tit instead? Confused

I personally think that’s weirder

Forthemarket · 11/06/2025 18:31

I mean there is no need to breastfeed a baby at all. Breastfeeding around weaning is many useful and some designer lacks credibility compared to the NHS and WHO. I mean anyone giving such specific, unkind and dogmatic dictates is a dick anyway whether against bf or ff.

The WHO recommend two years. So apparently some organisations who are well-versed in world health issues, think there is.

This country has extremely low rates of breastfeeding which are not helped by prejudiced attitudes like the one Millen displays.

spoonbillstretford · 11/06/2025 18:32

Karen Millen always seemed to be expensive and rather old and boring for me when I was younger. Now I'm 49 and the target age and salary range I still feel the same about it. Have never bought a single item from there.

U53rName · 11/06/2025 18:33

Considering she’s a boomer who had her own babies decades ago, I’ll politely decline any advice she’s offering up on the nutritional value in breast milk.

Yes I was going to say this, lots of countries around the world, not just hunter gatherer societies, breast feed for a couple of years, huge benefits in terms of nutrition and immunity, weight management

soupyspoon · 11/06/2025 18:36

I will never buy anything from Karen Millen again anyway after they tried to diddle me out of a refund for an item I returned. Tried to say I only returned 1 item when it was 2.

But what do you think caring is going to achieve other than commenting on this post? I mean really? Look what’s going on in America with false information around vaccines etc, false information giving out by the actual US Secretary of Health. People have their own brains to make informed decisions, I highly doubt anyone looking at information on breastfeeding is going to find a crap fashion designer a reputable source.

The world health organisation disagrees with you.
