Please help, dd ingested suncream and I’m so worried

my mum was putting suncream on dd and dd grabbed the tube and squeezed it into her mouth. I immediately jumped up and wiped it away but she definitely swallowed a huge chunk of it. I have given her water but have read it can cause vomiting. I feel like a terrible mum and I lost my job last week with redundancy and I’m feeling absolutely awful in general. This has sent me into a spiral. Please does anyone know if this will be ok? I will call the doctor in the morning if any illness develops but won’t be able to get an appointment today.

How old is your child?
What does it say on the tube in case of ingestion?

@OldLondonDad shes 2. It says do not inhale but nothing about ingesting it. Though I presume you are not supposed to!

She will be fine. You don't need to waste a doctor's time with this!

I would call 111 - they can access the poison database and tell you what if anything you need to do. Very likely nothing, but best to check.

Have the tube ready so you can read the exact brand and active ingredients.

pjani · 11/06/2025 11:16

I remember ringing the poisons hotline (in another country) twice after my small DC 1) licked the outside of a laundry detergent bottle and 2) ate a small red berry off a bush. Why o why do they do these things to stress us out!

A quick google says the number to call in the UK is 111 for advice.

DaisyChain505 · 11/06/2025 11:18

Try not to panic. It’s suncream, it isn’t bleach. If she seems ok in herself I would just be making her drink plenty of water and keeping an eye on her. I doubt she swallowed much as it wonder taste great. Either way it’s a product that is made to go on children’s skin, it’s not going to have anything terribly dangerous in it and if anything she might just have a runny tummy.

XWKD · 11/06/2025 11:18

Call 111 of course, but if it was dangerous to ingest just once it would be banned or have a child-friendly cap. She's not the first child to do this.

Coffeeishot · 11/06/2025 11:19

Ring 111 for advice don't make her vomit you can do more damage than good.

This is ridiculous advice. For some poisons it is in fact dangerous to induce vomiting as the substance has chance to do damage twice.

Suncream is designed and tested to go all over our bodies. If there was any questions over its toxicity we wouldn't be rubbing it on our skin - which can absorb stuff as well as taking drugs orally.

See how she is in an hour op. A squirt of suncream which you managed to wipe away a significant amount of wouldn't cause anything other than upset tummy at worst.

MumbleBumbleAppleCrumble · 11/06/2025 11:22

Don’t make her vomit! If dangerous it would say on the bottle and would most probably have a child proof lid.

Do not do this!! You could really injure (and traumatise) a child by doing this and there would be no benefit.

She's probably swallowed a lot less than you think. If she hasn't vomited from it, it's not enough to have made her unwell. Just keep an eye on the usual stuff (temperature, loss of appetite etc). If she seems fine, she's fine.

Do not do stick your fingers down her throat really bad advice but do call 111

pimplebum · 11/06/2025 11:27

Saying this kindly ; make a doctors appointment for your anxiety as this is no way to live

a call to your pharmacy, 111 or google will tell you that a squirt of cream is not harmful

my sons nursery had a basket of cream tubes accessible on the floor so I doubt it’s in any way harmful

AyeDeadOn · 11/06/2025 11:28

It'll be fine. If it was that dangerous it would be childproof or we'd be warned to keep out of reach of children.

sunshinechaser · 11/06/2025 11:29

I really wouldn’t worry this. Will be totally fine-why would a toxic ingredient be in a product designed to go on our skin?

pimplebum · 11/06/2025 11:30

2 second google found this :

Sunscreens are generally considered nonpoisonous (nontoxic). Most symptoms are caused by mild allergic reactions and skin and eye irritation. Symptoms may include:

I think that's unfair I think everyone would be concerned if their child ingested something they shouldn't

Absolutely do not try to make your child throw up. That's really, really bad advice for so many reasons.

OP, your child will be fine. Give her some water to drink.

By the far the mostly like outcome will be that she poos it out undigested. It might conceivably make her throw up, but that's about it. You only need to seek medical advice if she shows signs of being unwell or throws up more than once.

It's a product that people use on their body, hands and faces, so toxicity is very minimal - it's not like ingesting a drug or a cleaning product. It might make her puke but she won't be poisoned.

takealettermsjones · 11/06/2025 11:36

Well, I don't agree with the suggestion that nothing designed for our skin could possibly be toxic to ingest (hand sanitiser?) but I wouldn't worry too much about this, OP. Give water, keep an eye on her.

Littlemisscapable · 11/06/2025 11:36

She will be fine.

WitchesofPainswick · 11/06/2025 11:39

She's quite old to be eating random shit from tubes so I'd be clear with her about that: do you think she actually swallowed any or did she just squirt it in her mouth by mistake? Is she a talker? What did she say?

Anyway I wouldn't really worry - I'd probably make her drink a big glass of something delicious to water it down but I'm sure she will be fine. 111 will clarify with the exact product information. Try not to worry!
