Please help, dd ingested suncream and I’m so worried

my mum was putting suncream on dd and dd grabbed the tube and squeezed it into her mouth. I immediately jumped up and wiped it away but she definitely swallowed a huge chunk of it. I have given her water but have read it can cause vomiting. I feel like a terrible mum and I lost my job last week with redundancy and I’m feeling absolutely awful in general. This has sent me into a spiral. Please does anyone know if this will be ok? I will call the doctor in the morning if any illness develops but won’t be able to get an appointment today.

I would not do this

To reiterate...

Any time your child (or you!) ingest something that isn't food or drink, the best way to get clear advice on whether it's a problem or not is to call 111. They are tied into the National Poison Information Service.

Don't guess, don't assume "eh because it goes on skin it'll be fine". Just call. Then you get the answers you need, and can avoid any unnecessary worry.

crumpet · 11/06/2025 11:53

Hopefully the nasty taste will put her off doing it again and it’ll be a good lesson learned. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

PeckyGoose · 11/06/2025 11:57

My son at a similar age used to love to lick it off his arms and legs. Little weirdo. Never did him any harm.

I've just looked on a bottle I have here and it doesn't even say not to eat it, there's no warnings re: ingestion.

But give 111 a call to put your mind at rest if nothing else

Coffeeishot · 11/06/2025 12:13

I used to work with toddlers they sometimes licked each other's suncreamed limbs 😀

purplecorkheart · 11/06/2025 12:20

Is there a customer service phone number on the bottle. Might be worth giving them a ring too. They probably could advise if there is anything dangerous in the formula. I sure your child is not the only one who has ingested it.

Kbroughton · 11/06/2025 12:35

Bless you. Please dont blame yourself, as you can see on this thread, no child goes through childhood without getting into some kind of scrape. You are NOT a terrible mum and if this is the worse thing that happens then you will have got off lightly. I ate a carol capsule when I was little and had to get my stomach pumped out. My daughter got a lego piece stuck up her nose, I had to take her to A&E, we were there for hours, got home, and literally 30 minutes later she did the SAME THING and I had to go back.

Agree that you should ring 111 and get some advice but it will be fine. And under no circumstances should you make her sick yourself. If that is needed (highly unlikely) the hospital will do it.

Oneearringlost · 11/06/2025 12:46

She'll be FINE, OP!

Do not, under any circumstances induce vomiting, utterly unnecessary in this situation, actually potentially harmful in some situations, and a horrifically traumatic thing to do to a child.

MoreChocPls · 11/06/2025 13:10

Omg, relax, she’ll be fine. She won’t have ingested that much as it tastes horrible. Don’t make her sick and just give her water. Sorted.

Nurseryquestions86 · 11/06/2025 13:12

I'll be honest I would just get on with my day. I wouldn't worry unless she became ill.

If you're going to worry I guess ring 111 but I don't think it's necessary in this scenario.

ExtraOnions · 11/06/2025 13:15

Isn’t Suncream absorbed into the body, via the skin? If it was toxic, I think we would know about it …

BMW6 · 11/06/2025 13:17

OP if it was poisonous there would be a large warning sign on the tube!
It would say something like "if swallowed seek medical attention immediately"

You have nothing to fret about.

Superscientist · 11/06/2025 13:17

Rinse out the mouth thoroughly, her mouth might tasty funny so maybe give some fresh palate cleansing foods to help counter that

Broadly the toxic dose of things like toothpaste and suncream is consuming multi bottles. If there was a risk from ingestion small, mouth sized portions there would be warnings on the bottle about keeping out of sight or hands on young people.

Monitor over the next few hours and if they seem unwell get medical advice but it's likely that a horrid taste on the mouth is the limit to the consequence

NamelessNancy · 11/06/2025 13:18

Agree I'd expect it to be in childproof bottles with warnings if likely to be a problem. That sad it's nonsense that anything safe to apply to the skin is also safe to ingest. If in doubt call 111.

dottiedodah · 11/06/2025 13:29

Witchesofpainswick . 2 is not "old" to be putting things in their mouth! Anyway OP call 111 or maybe pharmacy while you wait for callback.childern can and do eat things
Try not to worry, I'm sure it will be fine but best to check just to be safe 😊
