To think “period cookies” is ridiculous…

Just seen a post on local fb page asking if any bakers can make some “period cookies” with a photo from Instagram. Various iced cookies - some depicting pants with pink gusset, others are sanitary pads, and some say “welcome to the big girls club”.
Is it me or has society lost the plot?

Ffs! Why do we need period cookies anyway, let alone graphic ones?

I thought this was going to be about cookies that help with periods (rich in suitable nutrients or something?) like breastfeeding snacks.

13yo me have been so embarrassed if I was given period cookies, but I think that’s more an issue of growing up in the 90s when you’d hide your pads and tampons were not for virgins. Still hate periods but good for them, hope the cookies were delicious.

Er... I started my periods in 1987 and the notion that 'tampons aren't for virgins' was something we found hysterically funny and outdated. Did you never read teen magazines?! They were full of adverts for tampons and there was a Lil-lets ad which made a big deal of the fact that non-applicator tampons could be hidden in your hand when you had to leave the classroom to go to the loo. I used tampons from the age of about 12/13 and so did loads of my friends. My sister used them as a teenager in the 70s.

I see it as the intense over buying culture we are in

easter baskets
christmas Eve boxes
prom extravaganza
sweet sixteen
baby showers
gender reveal parties
period gifts …

anything to make us feel we need to buy more shite and spend more money we don’t have

SatsumaDog · 11/06/2025 10:25

Gross

Rvethetgergwtbteh · 11/06/2025 10:26

It’s the “anything for attention and social media likes” world we live in. That’s the sad thing, I bet it’s less about supporting the girl starting her periods and more about the instagram photos.

Reduclious what next first time sex cards.
Congratulations on getting your first shag.
Happy period day biscuits ever month.
Welldone card and cookies for growing pubes.
Maybe a wanker drink and a cum covers tissues for all first time masturbation.
Its like having a party every time you go up a size in shoes.
The worlds gone mad.

Itisme567 · 11/06/2025 10:39

When I saw the title my initial reaction was "absolutely nothing wrong if you decide to save your favourite cookies to have when your body decides it's time for renovation". Then I read to contents and almost puked in my mouth! 🤮😂

housethatbuiltme · 11/06/2025 10:39

My mind is clearly different to others, I read the title and thought it was going to be someone recreating Victorian recipes.

There is someone online that does that with 1950s recipes... lots of weird jellied salads lol.

Flamingfeline · 11/06/2025 10:42

My lovely granddaughter had her first period while she happened to be staying with us. I asked if she’d like to go out for a pizza to mark the special occasion and she was very happy! We took her (step) grandad as well, but we didn’t tell him why we’d suddenly decided to go out and it wasn’t mentioned in front of anyone else. I think there’s a middle ground.

Todayisaday · 11/06/2025 10:45

Omg I would have died at that age, but ai guess some families might be less prudish than mine, so I think, yes why not, if you are bringing your daughter up to be unashamed, not embarressed about her body and proud to be a woman then I love this. However, you ahould know your child and if she will find this mortifying or empowering..

Grammarninja · 11/06/2025 10:46

The day there is a first wet dream cookie, I'll get on board with period ones.

Oh god, don’t put these ideas into the world - some idiot will think they are brilliant ideas! 🤣

Neemie · 11/06/2025 10:47

I thought they would be cookies laced with some kind of drug to help with period pain.

evtheria · 11/06/2025 10:49

DontTouchRoach · 11/06/2025 10:24

I grew up abroad, in a tiny country where we were a decade or so behind culture/fashion until we got cable tv, and periods weren't directly addressed unless you had cool, or younger western parents. It was definitely something we heard the older girls chat about in school, that you couldn’t use tampons until you’d had sex. Luckily I also gained access to magazines like J17 etc, where lI found most of the answers to my questions!

RaraRachael · 11/06/2025 10:49

Absolutely ridiculous idea - is this another American abomination like baby showers and school proms?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/06/2025 10:49

Lourdes12 · 11/06/2025 09:44

When I saw period cookies in the title, I thought they were cookies with medicinal properties that would make you feel better during your period

Yeah, they're also known as hash cakes.

Not convinced that they'd go down well at school, though. Not with the staff, at any rate.

InterestedDad37 · 11/06/2025 10:50

Seems as silly as a "my first wet dream" cake for an adolescent boy 🤔😀🎂💦
Having said that, I once made an embryo cake for my sister in law when she was pregnant 🤔😀 It still gets talked about 😂

HollyBerryz · 11/06/2025 10:53

I can't imagine any teenage girl wanting attention drawn to starting their periods.

Donostiera · 11/06/2025 10:58

I bought my DD a pretty necklace when she started (partly because I thought it was hilarious that the model name was 'go with the flow') - I think there's nothing wrong with a minor 'coming of age' gesture. But cookies shaped like sanitary pads - UGH!!

JHound · 11/06/2025 11:04

It’s a bit cringe but no more or less cringe than baby showers, bridal showers and stag / hen dos.

Bonkersdogmum · 11/06/2025 11:07

It’s just not needed is it.

I think nowadays period are a lot more known about by younger girls earlier because of social media. When DSD was getting to that age, I bought the teen period products range for her to keep in her room for when the time came. As others have said - it’s normal for women and it’s a case of normalising it for younger girls.

DP on the other hand was way over the top about it all and making out like it’s a huge transition🙄way over the top, really emotional and kept allowing her to have days off school for her period (she was milking it!) so I put my foot down and said no - this is something that will be happening every 4 weeks - get over it. Life doesn’t stop because of a period.

Overtheatlantic · 11/06/2025 11:07

My mom took me to lunch.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/06/2025 11:10

Crikey, when I started mine I got a copy of Jackie and a Aztec Bar.

Oh, I don't know, I might accept one, just to be polite.
