To think “period cookies” is ridiculous…

Just seen a post on local fb page asking if any bakers can make some “period cookies” with a photo from Instagram. Various iced cookies - some depicting pants with pink gusset, others are sanitary pads, and some say “welcome to the big girls club”.
Is it me or has society lost the plot?

There’s nothing vulgar about periods or wanting to mark the start of a daughter’s period, but the idea of eating cookies that are designed to look like maxi pads and blood-stained pink gussets is absolutely disgusting! 🤐

I agree with this. There is nothing vulgar about periods and many cultures celebrate menarche.

And I would appreciate it if somebody were to give me (preferably not period-themed) biscuits whenever I’m on my period.

I used to get incredibly nauseous due to period pains when I was a teenager. Period cookies therefor wouldn’t have been particularly great 🤷‍♀️

MinnieMountain · 11/06/2025 09:41

I can’t imagine any girl liking it.

I’ve only got a son but he knows about periods. I agree that they need to be talked about but drawing attention to starting them? Mortifying at that age.

I actually told MIL off when she told me that her great-niece had started her periods. She does have a habit of not understanding the concept of privacy though.

I thought this was going to be about cookies that help with periods (rich in suitable nutrients or something?) like breastfeeding snacks.

13yo me have been so embarrassed if I was given period cookies, but I think that’s more an issue of growing up in the 90s when you’d hide your pads and tampons were not for virgins. Still hate periods but good for them, hope the cookies were delicious.

Me too 😂

I'm highly skeptical this happened

@IveGotAnUnusuallyLargePelvisISwear I think it's just a competition between the parents now, theres 3 who seem to always be posting pictures of this kind of shit.

I am guilty of going OTT at Christmas so can't judge too much, however, all of this fanfare on a random Wednesday must really dilute actual events for some of these kids.

Definitely a thing

I think these are pretty cute! Anything to demystify periods, although I'm not sure that celebrating puberty is actually such a great idea. Are there cookies for when boys' balls drop?

Also, as a side note, when I googled period cookies it suggested recipes for cookies made with period blood. I felt these cute little cookies were preferable to that..... 😱

I think my 7YO would actually die if I did this to her in a few years 🤣 Each to their own though I guess

Lourdes12 · 11/06/2025 09:44

When I saw period cookies in the title, I thought they were cookies with medicinal properties that would make you feel better during your period

TY78910 · 11/06/2025 09:46

I wouldn’t do this or make it a ‘celebration’ but each to their own.

What I do find utterly bizarre is how this woman has just announced to everyone in the local area that her DD just got her first period. That’s fucked up.

Dangermoo · 11/06/2025 09:46

Nobody is saying periods are vulgar; more so that the celebration is. It's just another tacky add on that's doing something for the sake of it. Since time immemorial, it's another thing that women have just got on with, without needing recognition.

So did I.

XWKD · 11/06/2025 09:51

Shouldn't it be private unless the girl decides otherwise?

My friend's daughter was mortified when her grandmother celebrated her first period, telling everyone "she has become a woman". It was nobody else's business.

Oh definitely, I’ve known parents (usually mums tbf) who get very competitive about marking occasions. It’s a shame I suppose they feel the need to do all this. I go a bit mad at Christmas too but Easter, Valentine’s Day, pancake day and fucking Friday 13th… wtf?! That’s not even a thing.

It’s something women have been shamed for, made fun of, have been denied medical treatment to manage pain and potentially serious medical issues.

I therefore quite understand wanting to celebrate periods / a menarche. But I do feel incredibly sorry for the girl whose mother has just announced her menarche on Facebook! With rather questionably decorated baked goods… seems like an invitation for bullying, unfortunately.

Also, isn't the traditional period sweet fix chocolate? Always was in my day. "Must get a box of tampax, oh and a massive bar of Cadburys".

I sometimes specifically crave cake, not chocolate, or chocolate biscuits, when I'm premenstrual or have my period. Something about the texture.

MummaMummaMumma · 11/06/2025 09:37

Why does it matter? It's not harming you.
Some kids will like it, some won't.
Literally nothing to do with you.

It’s a discussion only, lots of things could be nothing to do with anyone, it’s a discussion forum.

And it’s gathering interest and views.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 11/06/2025 09:55

I remember a female comedian (Helen Lederer ?) making a joke about her parents putting an ad in the Jewish Chronicle announcing her menarche !

Sparklesandbananas · 11/06/2025 09:56

My daughter received a care package off me. Bubble bath and a small bits to help with the time of the month. She wouldn’t appreciate cookies or anything celebrating it tbh. She hates her period. I’ve known people ordered cakes celebrating the child loosing their first tooth. Some people like to celebrate everything.

Coffeeishot · 11/06/2025 09:56

When I had periods it was savoury I craved crisps mainly or cheese and crackers ! I was meh about chocolate or cake

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 11/06/2025 09:57

I think it IS something worth celebrating, but also it's private. I like the idea upthread of giving your DD a book about inspirational women, or something similar. When DD had hers I gave her a big hug. Any "cookies" (biscuits!) would've been baked bought by me for just the two of us.

WimbyAce · 11/06/2025 09:58

SquashedMallow · 11/06/2025 09:14

But somethings really don't need to be "celebrated" - just normalised. And in 2025, I honestly really do think menstruating is talked about openly and completely normalised to discuss. You don't need to display it on a bunch of cakes. Come on ? Let's get some dignity back.

Masturbation is normal, but you wouldn't put an ejaculating penis with a box of tissues or a woman's hand on a vulva on a bunch of cakes ?

😆

ThatFluentBiscuit · 11/06/2025 09:58

Dd would have thought this was hilarious and been happy about cookies, because we have a sense of humour and because I haven't raised her to think periods are vulgar, and also because who doesn't love cookies?

If your daughters would have been mortified, you've fucked up massively in your parenting somewhere. I'd be embarrassed to announce it on a parenting forum.
