Dog lovers aren’t animal lovers

I’ve been lurking in various dog related threads recently and it’s become abundantly clear how few dog owners on MN actually love animals. Not all. But lots.

Posters not caring about health tests on parents, or the breeders experience or ability or what happens to the bitch (mother of the pups) after as their desire for expensive mix outweighs their ethics about puppy farming or dogs being born in pain with chronic health issues as a result of bad breeding. Posters admitting their dogs have soiled themselves for a year before they put their dog to sleep. No matter which way you look at it (and believe me, I understand how hard it is to say goodbye), people who love their dogs don’t let them sleep in their shit for a year. Posters not exercising their dog sufficiently or not giving it mental stimulation and then wondering why its badly behaved.

Time and time again I’ve seen posters put their desire for a dog above any morals they might have about animal welfare (including their own dogs). welfare. Honestly, it’s quite shocking how little so many posters care about their dogs, or indeed the dogs use to produce their cute puppy.

Yes, I forgot about that too. I know puppy slings are a thing too, for unvaccinated pups, so can understand prams for the bigger breeds.

It is always exciting when they get to go out for their first proper walk 😊

I can’t wait!! Especially for when he is big enough for a proper hike!

I have considered getting a sling but can’t quite bring myself to do it! Although I may cave, but he will probably still be too heavy for me to carry even in that! It’s lucky he doesn’t wriggle!

I think it’s more that you have a specific person in mind who would use a doggy pram - those with designer breeds who treat the dog like a baby and I would agree with you on that.

But @YeOldeGreyhound mentioned a circumstance in which a dog pram would be useful. As did I. As with most things, they are a good idea in some circumstances

Yes, or those doggy handbag things.
I do know some people with chihuahuas, and they make them walk. No hand bags for them.

WhereIsMyJumper · 11/06/2025 14:36

Or if someone got a puppy but also have an older dog that needs a long walk. At least you can bring the puppy with you. They can only walk for a short amount of time even after first jabs.

smallglassbottle · 11/06/2025 14:38

The same is often true of cat owners. The amount of cats who appear unhappy and stressed online because of the behaviour of their owners is quite staggering. I feel sorry for all creatures who are just toys for their stupid owners. All animals should be cared for appropriately and respect given to all species.

Absolutely. Walks should be time limited for puppies due to their growing bones and joints.

I hope you have a blast with your pup's first walk. The puppy years fly by so fast.

For me, being a dog lover & having anything to do with the Kennel Club are mutually exclusive. Don't tell me how much you adore dogs & animals whilst supporting a system & organisation that has destroyed breeds for the sake of looks.

I actually managed to get myself blocked on twitter, years ago, by both the KC & Crufts for tweeting alongside vets about what a repellent spectacle they've created.

Actually no. This is true of some breeds, and, unfortunately, those are the ones that grab the headlines. There are a lot of breeds that do not have significant health problems, yet people like you lump them in with the ones have serious genetic defects.

The Kennel Club is not to blame for this and nor is Crufts. This is a very childish and uneducated viewpoint to hold.

There is an elderly lady who goes to my local park who takes her elderly dog there in a pram. It is his favourite walk, but it is too far for him to walk there. He does get out and enjoys a sniffy walk (which dogs tend to prefer as they get older.... dogs change as they get older).
It also gets her out too. If you live alone and have few people in your life, dogs are a godsend (it is that case for me).

I think that's lovely for both her and her dog. I ignore anybody with the mindset of thinking dog prams are piss taking material. It just shows how those who reckon they are compassionate with regards to animal welfare, are far from it.

KC breeds are deformed, unhealthy and no longer fit to do their original jobs. Look at flat nosed breeds (pugs, French bulldogs) and sloping backs of German Shepherds. Labradors are bred to be chunky.

Some. By no means all. Don't believe what you read in the Daily Mail.

It’s the same as someone saying a baby gate is unnecessary for a dog when they can be absolutely necessary!

I draw the line at putting clothes on dogs, though!!

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 11/06/2025 14:53

Dog prams are also really useful for dogs who are recovering from surgery @SpaceBunniesareCool - or is that wrong too?

Do you also object to people driving their dogs for a walk? If not, why is using a pram for the same purpose a bad thing?

Sweetleftfood · 11/06/2025 14:55

Someone posted on a dog thread a while ago about her seeing someone out with a malamute/husky type dog with a jumper on! That is incredibly silly dog owner behaviour surely

What annoys me with 'poo' owners is that they really do believe the PR about being 'healthier' non-allergic etc etc. The fact that they know absolutely nothing about the breeds that are involved is staggering not even the poodle part. My dog is now 8 and I have met so many owners with various poo breeds and I don't think I have ever come across one that hasn't got an issue such as food allergies, they all seem to be fussy eaters, hyper active, resource guarding but they never seem to connect the fact that they are poorly bred designer dogs from unethical breeders.

Same with people who randomly breed their dogs and say stupid shit like ‘it’s only fair to let them experience having one litter’ NO! You are ill prepared to help your dog give birth, and you are doing a cash grab.

I had so many people telling me to breed my dog as she’s lovely. Absolutely not! She’s my pet and no way would I put her through an unnecessary pregnancy. Also have a friend who bred her cat let it get pregnant because ‘it’s a nice experience for her kids’.

My dog is greyhound, and she does have some clothing. They have very little body fat and can feel the cold.

I do think chunky dogs in puffa jackets look ridiculous. And they have a hood. Why? 😂

SharpestBulb · 11/06/2025 14:57

Gosh, I'd hate to be 'loved' by someone who thought love meant it was ok to kill me and eat me. Weirdos on this thread, that's for sure.

Sick sick people who use animals for their pleasure.

Isn't that exactly what pet ownership is? Keeping animals for pleasure?

I’m going to assume that the ‘clothing’ is very much doggy appropriate though and you don’t dress her in Halloween costumes 😂

I got a gate on the kitchen door way, got no door and it's to keep the dogs out the kitchen.

Sansan18 · 11/06/2025 15:03

Living beside one of the largest dog/puppy farms in Europe I find it hard to disagree with you. It's an industrial scale unit funded and kept going entirely by the public's abuse of dogs.
It doesn't matter if you spend a few thousand on a puppy, it's still cruelty.

Whippetlovely · 11/06/2025 15:08

I agree, OP. There are so many new horrors as a result of the increased consumerisation of dog ownership.

One thing that gets to me in particular is the international trade in dogs via overseas 'rescues'. Do people really think it is in the best interest of a traumatised street dog to be crated up and shipped for hours to a profoundly different location, rather than humanely destroyed?

There was a story in the paper the other day about a dog that had been shipped from Dubai and had gone missing from its foster carers, travelling 200 miles and eventually swimming out to sea. Imagine the shock, confusion, trauma of the animal, trying desperately to return to the only 'normality' that it knew. Cruelty, pure and simple, dressed up as love.

Wow that's crazy. I have a friend who adopted a rescue from Romania, she's the sweetest dog and has a lovely life. Why would you want to destroy an animal rather than offer it a lovely life somewhere it can be cared for.
