Vinted - am i really being unreasonable?

harveythehorse · 10/06/2025 14:24

I had a thoroughly unpleasant interaction with a Vinted seller last night and wonder if I really am being unreasonable . . .

Bought a pair of Nike leggings for DD, advertised as an adult size 4 (which she needs for the length). When they turn up, they're a child's size large (so too short). I wouldn't have purchased them if they'd been advertised correctly.

I raise an issue, and flag the problem with the seller. I am then bombarded (and I wish I was exaggerating) with messages telling me I'm pathetic for wanting a refund on a cheap item, that I should have seen what I was buying (even though there was no photo of the label) and then sent actual threats. She then cancelled the order and seemingly I have to pay to return them to her! It isn't a huge sum of money at all, but Vinted are saying that I have to return the leggings, despite the fact I screenshotted her threatening language, and have sent proof the leggings weren't correctly listed.

At this point, it's the principle but does anyone have any advice on what to do? I'm very happy to return the item, but fail to see why it should be on me to pay for it (I'm aware I should probably just suck it up but it's really annoyed me).

i had thought about starting to use Vinted. Guess what? I won’t go near them now!

It's really shocking how many sellers are able to list items in completely the wrong size and for there to be zero ramifications for them!

Good tip about only buying items with label photos.

That's Vinted's fault though.
Their sizing table is insane.

If I want a Klass garment in size S I have to filter out everything above a size 8. Their sizing table says that size S = size 8. It's bonkers.

And I am not actually a size 8. Klass size S is about a 10/12.

rosemarble · 10/06/2025 15:45

I'm happy to sell stuff on Vinted, but only if I'm really, really certain what something is - proper labels and close up photos, do I buy anything.

People list items and tag them incorrectly. e.g suede slippers
"Sorry hun, these aren't actually suede".

Mynewnameis · 10/06/2025 15:55

I've been burned too. Unfortunately the risk you take. Leave her a shit review and blocked

DarkForces · 10/06/2025 16:43

It's why the max I go up to is about a tenner with all the fees etc included. The buyer protection is a complete waste of time.

MyNeedyLilacBird · 10/06/2025 16:53

I don't use vinted anymore after a vile experience as a buyer with a ripped stained dress i got sent that was apparently in excellent condition. Seller then became extremely threatening and passive aggressive over messages.

On principal I insisted on my money back but videoed and photographed that dress within an inch of its life as I just knew she was going to try and dispute my return. She did but I was victorious in the end and got my money back minus postage costs.

It's an absolute disgrace that this woman wasn't banned and I wasn't allowed to leave a negative review to warn others. It just isn't worth the hassle so I closed my account down as vinted are a joke and their so called buyer protection is a scam in my mind.

harveythehorse · 10/06/2025 16:58

Vinted are so depressingly unhelpful as well which really sticks the boot in. I've been buying quite a lot of things on there recently for my ever-growing DD but I'm not sure dealing with unhinged sellers (who have my address) is worth the saving.

Yeah the unhinged sellers having my address really unsettled me especially after my experience and was another reason I threw the towel in

ThriveIn2025 · 10/06/2025 17:01

I also got stung with a pair of leggings. They were advertised as small. I fit small. I’ve bought this brand loads and know the sizing.

When they arrived they were not small. They must have been extra small because I’ve tried that size on in shops before and know it doesn’t fit me. Lo and behold the label was cut out.

Nothing I could do about it but as you say, only purchase things where they photograph the label now.

I wrote off the cost. Just thought it wasn’t worth my time or energy as they cost £7 and I knew the seller would contest it.

ThenAgainTom · 10/06/2025 17:01

The rude and aggressive sellers really spoil Vinted, as do the terms and conditions and lack of Vinted support. My pet hate is reporting an item and Vinted disagreeing despite it being obvious that the listing is a breach ( advertised as new, but described as worn; listed as linen, when the labels show it isn't).

HOWEVER, I have had some amazing buys ( leather unworn Boden shoes that were £185 and I paid £7.50, a Joseph pure wool coat £495 cost me £11.00 and numerous quality dresses and costs for less than £10.00).

I will keep searching and buy wisely.

FuckAlexa · 10/06/2025 17:06

I would just leave shit feedback for her and bin the leggings. Explain she was abusive and the goods weren't as described. It's her own fault.Vinted are useless.

Newmeagain · 10/06/2025 17:07

Unpaidviewer · 10/06/2025 15:14

Not that is helps you now but I only buy items that show photos of the size and composition labels.

Yes, me too. And I am increasingly careful about buying stuff. I look for things like clear photos, etc. I also look at the description and the other things being sold by the seller - you can deduct a lot if you do a bit of due diligence!

Foreverm0re · 10/06/2025 17:17

This is the annoying thing about Vinted. What are they even charging us that buyers protection for? It’s completely at the sellers discretion whether to pay for a return postage and I think it’s crap when it’s their mistake.
I had similar recently, bought something that was damaged (not photographed and not in transit) they didn’t even apologise, were obviously hoping I just wouldn’t notice. I ended up keeping it because I couldn’t be bothered with the hassle.

ScrubbedCauliflower · 10/06/2025 17:19

That’s awful, goodness what’s wrong with some people. Why can’t she just suck it up, say sorry, refund you and move on. It’s her that’s being pathetic. Threatening you is not on. Threatening you over £10 is deranged. Do tell us what happens next and if Vinted deal with your complaint. I buy and sell on Vinted quite a bit. I only started using it this year but I’ve bought quite a few really lovely good condition and high quality clothes at a snip of the new price . But I bought one shirt, thinking 12 meant 12 but it was huge. It also had a big oily stain on it which wasn’t pointed out in the listing. I just left it as about £5 and learnt from there. I am very very cautious now about what I buy and always check and double check sizes. If no label showing the size I message the seller.

harveythehorse · 10/06/2025 17:30

Annoyingly it's becoming clear that Vinted don't want to know about it but I shall come back to this thread if I reach any sort of positive conclusion. Thanks to everyone for your feedback and advice x

You get the original postage amount , and protection fee back so you’ll literally lose return postage of about £2-£3 . I’d return on principle

You shouldn’t lose anything. EBay is much better in cases like this. They just refund you.

FoodAppropriation · 10/06/2025 18:17

KarmenPQZ · 10/06/2025 14:46

You’re def not being unreasonable but I think your logic is a bit off here… the leggings aren’t costing you £17 because you’re not getting the leggings. You’re speculating money to try getting something cheaper than new without trawling 10 different charity shops. Something like when I pay bus fare to go into town but they don’t have what I needed in a specific shop.

the seller sounds horrific tho and def push for vinted to step in and try to help. It raises the question of what the protection fee is for but then it was clearly the sellers fault for miss labelling them so not sure why you or others should pay either.

sorry

what?

Something like when I pay bus fare to go into town but they don’t have what I needed in a specific shop.

that is 100% not the same thing at all! The OP bought an item in good faith, and shouldn't be out of pocket because the seller tried to scam her.

I'd return on principal too. No way would I let the seller keep the money because I kept the item.

harveythehorse · 10/06/2025 18:37

I will return, but am aggrieved that I have to pay anything at all frankly.

Similar happened to me. Someone sold me Short jeans without stating they were short length (surely the default is regular length)?!

No pics or label.

Vinted sided with them so in the end I just kept and charity shopped them. Learned to only buy when I can see the label now. For every 5 good items I receive, I get a dud.

FWIW - £10 for Nike leggings is a lot imo.

Oh my life. I had this the other way round. 😬 Posted a pair of jeans specifying they were short length, with the label on and also a tape measure along the leg showing they were 27” long. Buyer then had a panic on once I’d posted them as she was 5’8”.

BastardesEverywhere · 10/06/2025 19:27

It's really shit in cases like that.

I spent £20 on a vintage football shirt ds1 wanted, pristine condition etc. What turned up was a tatty old rag of a football shirt, clearly a totally different item (different colours and everything) and full of stains and marks.

I messaged the seller who responded with 'omg, I must have got the labels mixed up, I sent you the wrong thing, so sorry'. Tbh I think it was a scam, a seller just hoping the buyer wouldn't dispute in time because I can't imagine anyone would have paid even a quid for what turned up.

Even though the seller outright apologised and said they'd sent the wrong item I STILL had to pay the return postage!

bashual · 10/06/2025 19:34

Similar thing happened to me with my first ever Vinted purchase. Bought a winter coat described as “Brand New without tags”. When it arrived it had two stains, hair all along the collar….and dirty tissues in both pockets, disgusting. I wrote to the seller who kept repeating “you got a 90 quid coat for 20 quid, what did you expect?”. She could not understand that a worn coat was no longer worth £90. Dishonesty at its worst, even admitted there were tissues in the pockets but still refused to pay for return postage…. and I didn’t want to spend another six quid on postage. Wrote to Vinted to say that the Consumer Regulations Act states that if a product is not as described, seller should pay postage. They wrote back to say their terms and conditions overrode the UK law!

As a result I decided I would only purchase items in Vinted that were Brand New with tags and had a picture of said label.

RebeccaRedhat · 10/06/2025 19:41

She sounds delightful! Personally I'd return them, even if I ended up further out of pocket. Purely so they don't get any of my money! Leave negative feedback if you can?
