£19 to launder single duvet

Was quoted this in local laundry/dry cleaners. £19 - I think this is ridiculous. Or am I out of touch? Central Scotland.

Put it in the washing machine? We can do our king size one do I'd have thought a single one was no issue at all.

What drum capacity is your washing machine? I've only ever dared to put the single ones in.

Launderette and dry at home? Agree, it is cheaper to buy a new one (synthetic) but hardly sustainable or eco friendly.

Rattysparklebum · 10/06/2025 13:14

I pay £20 for a feather double/ king size, it’s collected from home and dropped back next day, which is great, a single is £10, so yes, yours does sound expensive.

minnienono · 10/06/2025 13:14

I was quoted £19.99 for a king, bought a new one instead!

Daisydiary · 10/06/2025 13:14

I’ve found this before. If you can’t wash at home, it’s often cheaper to buy a new one. Terrible for the environment!

ImFineItsAllFine · 10/06/2025 13:16

I've got a 9kg washing machine and can wash a 4 Tog king size duvet in it (keeping the spin speed low!)

Negroany · 10/06/2025 13:16

I take my king size to those huge washing machines you get at service stations. Think it's £9, then more to dry it.

I have a large washing machine, it can do the king size summer duvet but not the winter one. It can do the singles and doubles OK.

toomuchfaff · 10/06/2025 13:17

wow. I get service washes every week about £8 a bag...

notimeforregrets · 10/06/2025 13:20

Do you have a launderette close by that you could use instead?

dementedpixie · 10/06/2025 13:21

Does a single duvet not fit in your washing machine? Then take it to one of those big washing machine/tumble dryer places in a local petrol station to dry it if you don't have a tumble dryer

Planesmistakenforstars · 10/06/2025 13:26

If it's a good quality down duvet and they are washing and drying it how it should be, then I don't think it's outrageous. If it's synthetic then madness.

Womanofcustard · 10/06/2025 13:28

Thank you all. I was expecting it to be about £10 - single synthetic duvet. I do have a large washing machine but no tumble dryer , so will need to choose the moment!
Don’t use that cleaners very often, but have found their prices ok in the past.

I wash singles in washing machine then hang to dry.

I have microfibre duvets - allergic to the down ones.

I've only ever machine-washed the single one and it dries quickly no need for a dryer. If you don't have outside space, drape it over a couple of dining chairs or on a clothes horse in the bathroom.

Can be put back on the bed the same day.

dementedpixie · 10/06/2025 13:41

@Womanofcustard im in Scotland and there's loads of communal tumble dryers near me in local petrol stations and beside local corner shops.

bengalcat · 10/06/2025 13:45

I put my double in the washing machine on a 30min wash as I do with all of my washing

I was exactly same, £37 for two.

MrsClatterbuck · 10/06/2025 13:48

Cost me £11 to was a 10.5 tog coverless duvet in one of those outdoor laundry machines. It was a lot cheaper during lockdown in 2020 when I first used one. It took up to 18kg plus there is a 8kg machine. I dried it on the washing line. My go to laundry business has closed so the outdoor one is what I am using at present. There is a dryer but prefer to line dry if possible. Though being retired makes this mor feasible.
I believe some people buy cheap duvets and just chuck them when needing washed and then buy new.

apieceofhairyshit · 10/06/2025 13:51

yeah, I got a new one from Asda for £7

Toddlerteaplease · 10/06/2025 13:52

I put my king sized one in one of those wash me things. It was £18

Toddlerteaplease · 10/06/2025 13:56

I bought a new one the second time!

Astrak · 10/06/2025 14:01

Our local laundrette charges £8 for a king-size duvet and £8 to dry it. They're much better than the garage ones, because the laundrette is privately owned and clean, has staff 0800-1800hrs and will do the washing for you if you have to drop and run.

LongRangeDessertGroup · 10/06/2025 14:03

Re it being cheaper to buy a new one but not eco friendly check with your local animal shelter as they can sometimes make use of old duvets, or if you know any sewing groups they can use the filling instead of stuffing eg for toys.

Lavendersong · 10/06/2025 14:07

You can wash a single synthetic duvet in the smallest of machines and it will dry in your dryer, over a door or outside

They are the easiest ones to wash and dry
