Put off cauliflower for life after tonight

Lovely friend popped over earlier as I've been feeling low. She brought dinner but cooked it at my house. She made roasted cauliflower like the bang bang cauliflower you get at restaurants. Delicious. But oh my god. The smell in my house is now 🤢 I'm actually feeling nauseous just from the lingering smell uggghhh

I guarantee it’s not as bad as when I left cauliflower steaming overnight on the “keep warm” function on my steamer. Coming down the stairs the next morning the dog stopped and backed up to me whimpering. It was a putrid mix of weed and ass. Worse than something that had died. Took ages to go.

Your poor dog but that is very funny!

retiredpickme · 10/06/2025 23:44

I also read on here about worms in cod and other fish and it took me ages to be able to eat them again 😔

There is nothing good about cauliflower in any of its permutations.

Maggotously disgusting food.

Love 'maggotous' 😂😂😂

echt · 11/06/2025 00:08

I like cauliflower but always cook it to an Indian recipe.

As for cauliflower steaks in restaurants - ludicrous price.

I'm liking "maggotously" very much.

PickAChew · 11/06/2025 00:09

I love cauliflower but it is far from at its best at the moment. I only buy it if it passes a sniff test in store.

ThatLemonFox · 14/06/2025 18:20

Jesus christ if this is bothering you enough to write on Mumsnet about it then I guess you have a pretty cushy life. Get a grip love!

Zippp · 14/06/2025 18:23

God I love kale. Possibly my favourite vegetable. Bit of salt, bit of olive oil, cook it in the oven until it’s crispy…

I have pizza cooking in the oven as I write this and I would swap it for kale in a heartbeat.

Challenger2A7 · 14/06/2025 18:46

The worst veggie for me is celeriac, it smells like puke.

KeineBedeutung · 14/06/2025 18:53

I used to love cauliflower and broccoli. Only rarely cook them now, for hubby.
Give me a pea or carrot any day. 😬

PollyPansy · 14/06/2025 19:20

You need a Price's chef/kitchen candle.

raspberrieswithchocolate · 14/06/2025 19:21

Hope you get rid of the smell soon @Changedusernameforthis2
I'm relieved you're only posting about the smell of cauliflower, however!
I wasn't sure whether to read your post after seeing the title of your thread - I was worried you were going to post about finding something awful in your cauliflower😬

Cherrysoup · 14/06/2025 19:50

There’s a massive field of kale which the farmer has left for two years where I walk the dogs. On a wet warm day the smell is extraordinary, in a not good way.

chillycat · 14/06/2025 20:02

I had a very similar self-inflicted experience. Threw a few sprouts into a slow cooker stew. What an idiot. A putrid smell of fields/ death/ farts got into every corner, soft furnishing... and I'm sure through the walls into the neighbours. Eughhhhh....

This is exactly where I am at. What am I going to do about the smell??? Candles and open windows are not cutting it. I'm already nervous about waking up to it tomorrow

Don't worry, the cauliflower-induced farts should drown it out 😂

God I love cauliflower. Never noticed any particular smell and I have an inconveniently sensitive nose. We eat it every week.

I saw something very upsetting about figs a while back - previously one of my favourite foods in the world - and can never eat them again. I’m still in mourning.

It wasn’t the stage musical of Amelie, was it, which a song about figs?

broney · 14/06/2025 23:11

I think that's cabbage you are talking about, boiled to a pulp, and taking me right back to school dinners. Never had any smell or antisocial aftereffects from cauliflower.

Changedusernameforthis2 · 14/06/2025 23:50

Nope definitely cauliflower..it's faded now but, never again!

I had a fig tree but it only got to year 3 before it sadly perished .
I read the growing instructions that you cannot eat any fruit year 1.
Year 2 it was rubbish but I did wonder why it went straight to fruit with no flowers .
I didn't know about the wasps
Good job I never got to eat any bloody fruit Shock

onceuponatimeinneverland · 15/06/2025 01:03

Omg, can't believe this thread has appeared in active

I thought I'd try roasted cauliflower tonight and it's absolutely rank. The whole house stinks, the air fryer seems tainted. I love cauli as well. Like OP it made me feel sick.

ThatLemonFox · 15/06/2025 14:33

Sorry my post was horrible, I can only apologise😳

I remember reading an article by a pathologist who said corpses smell like cauliflower cheese (it might have been the stomach contents or something) and it put me off massively 🤢

Tastes like pork as well apparently. Before they rot. Presumably rotting corpses would taste like rotting pork
