Lovely friend popped over earlier as I've been feeling low. She brought dinner but cooked it at my house. She made roasted cauliflower like the bang bang cauliflower you get at restaurants. Delicious. But oh my god. The smell in my house is now 🤢 I'm actually feeling nauseous just from the lingering smell uggghhh

I remember reading an article by a pathologist who said corpses smell like cauliflower cheese (it might have been the stomach contents or something) and it put me off massively 🤢

Yes I saw that article!! And I have felt the same about cauliflower ever since too.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/06/2025 20:25

Cauliflower is just awful! Especially when masquerading as mac ‘n’ cheese only to be beyond disappointing.

DiscoBob · 10/06/2025 20:27

I don't think there's such a thing as 'bang bang' cauliflower from any cuisines I've encountered?
I guess it's just a generic name that restaurants in the UK use for spicing from china or South east Asia?

JulesJules · 10/06/2025 20:29

Oh yes, figs 😭

nomas · 10/06/2025 20:30

Cauliflower got me through low carbing and lost 20 pounds.

Wait until the...ahem...effects hit. Not going to help the situation!

It is called a cruciferous vegetable as the hideous fart smell is utterly crucifying

TW for fig lovers - does the fig thing involve wasps?

catscatscurrantscurrants · 10/06/2025 20:50

Cross posted! Or pollinated.

IberianBlackout · 10/06/2025 20:53

Love cauliflower, fig is my favourite fruit.

But dear lord, you’ll never get me to eat persimmons.

Yeah but I just accept it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/06/2025 20:55

@Changedusernameforthis2 - a lit match is supposed to get rid of farty/pooey smells in the loo - it might work on this, maybe? You might need to do it a number of times.

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 10/06/2025 21:01

For the smell, put some sliced lemon in a small bowl of water and give it a minute or 2 in the microwave. Freshens the air.

Figs. Can someone explain it like I'm 5?

It's on a lot of menus in pubs now

I guarantee it’s not as bad as when I left cauliflower steaming overnight on the “keep warm” function on my steamer. Coming down the stairs the next morning the dog stopped and backed up to me whimpering. It was a putrid mix of weed and ass. Worse than something that had died. Took ages to go.

QuickPeachPoet · 10/06/2025 21:14

I love cauliflower but it smells like farts. and socks.

Haveapotato · 10/06/2025 21:31

I'm on holiday atm...the breakfast buffet in the hotel is glorious. Apart from the giant booked cauliflower florets....next to the churros. 🤢

It’s my favourite side at wagamamas!

bloodredfeaturewall · 10/06/2025 21:42

picking out the caterpillars from the brokkoli was my chore as child.
took me YEARS to be able to eat it again.

love cauliflour though, I don't mind the smell.
the after effects though. I swear the duvet floats a few inches above us at night after a good, healthy brassica dinner.

BertieBotts · 10/06/2025 21:44

I hate wasps and I still eat figs. The wasp is digested by the fig so it's not really like eating one.

With cauliflower and brocolli you have to get any remnants of it in the outside bin ASAP and don't leave the pans lying around until the morning, especially not soaking. Wash them up or stick in the dishwasher straight away because the smell is terrible.

I'm guessing it's inspired by 'biang biang' noodles which is from a specific region of china. (I think?? ) I've not tried them but they're meant to be really good. I doubt the pub versions bear that much resemblance?! Might be nice though!

Ilovemychocolate · 10/06/2025 23:30

I’m guessing you lot have never had haddock?!?!
The taste…yum…the smell after 🤮

I love haddock. It doesn't smell any stronger than other white fish? I guess smoked haddock. I like to poach it in milk and make kedgeree x
