Husband moaning about dinners

Willow990 · 08/06/2025 16:55

I meal prep every Sunday for dinners for the week ahead, a typical week looks something like this:

Mon - chilli or spaghetti bolognese
Tuesday - curry (chicken)
Wednesday - fish (salmon usually)
Thursday - stir fry
Friday - Steak

I told DH this morning what I was planning for next week and he asked whether there’s any chance of some variety and for me to try some new dishes. He works long days and I’m usually about to serve up as he walks through the door.

Has anyone got any ideas for how I could freshen things up?

@ChocolateCinderToffee
Why are you on this thread? You have nothing useful or constructive to offer.

Rude!!
I have suggested how I do meals ,how i alternate cook books, suggested recipes that are quick and easy and how we work as a team.
What was your contribution?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 08/06/2025 22:47

Omg I'd love to have a wife cooking for me he doesn't know how lucky he is!

ThinWomansBrain · 08/06/2025 22:53

cook what you fancy - for yourself
or tell him it's his turn to cater for both of you for the next few weeks/months

And I'm sure you enjoy every single mundane task left to do whilst the big man has his very important job and that's all he can manage as it's so so important.

I think there's a pretty good chance the OP actually likes her husband and wants to do nice things for him. Not everything is about slagging men off. The only point of her post was to ask for recipe suggestions. Your post is just nasty.

OP slags him off in her title. Rightly so too.

Doing something nice and she gets moaned at. That's what some people are responding to.

So when he walks through the door he can start preparing a meal which will obviously be much later than usual, but that would be all right or something to criticise him for.

My husband is a corporate lawyer and he often works late and he actually does a lot of the cooking. Because we are a partnership and he doesn't have antiquated ideas about what a woman's role is or that if someone is home before the other or indeed all day that it is their responsibility or chore.

So yes if he has a problem with the meals she is making he can indeed step up and sort some himself. So what if its later than usual. Perhaps he could even make something the night or do prep the night before before or batch cook so its a simple case of reheating.

bluesinthenight · 08/06/2025 23:14

Your menu is super boring; almost as boring as mine.

I am sure that somebody has already mentioned the BBC Good Food site. The recipes on there are easy to prep, and so very tasty.

beans on toast

MintChocCat · 08/06/2025 23:29

BBC Good Food is good. You could try:

Chilli con carne
Lasagne
Sea bass
Prawn Linguine
Pad Thai
Stir fry with different proteins eg, beef, duck, prawn, chicken
Fajitas
Thai red curry
Thai green curry
Orzo pasta salads
Casseroles, stews
Pulled chicken
Toad in the hole
Breaded fish, with chips and peas
Lambshanks
Sausage, mash, peas, gravy

When I got bored with repetitive food, I started getting Gousto boxes. Now I only get about one box a month but have loads of new recipes that I make again. We choose 2 recipes each because he eats meat and I don’t. There’s recipes that can be made in 10 minutes and prep in 5 that then go in the oven.

I love my husband but I find all this planning really tedious so I wouldn't express my love in that way. I do cook frequently but often I fall short of the ingredients and just substitute with what I have in the cupboard, even when I have cooked sweet and sour mackerel as a result of such substitutions, he wouldn't comment on it, even though I know he hasn't really enjoyed it; my youngest teenager is less reticent in telling me this but again I have a late teenager so old enough to go and buy something if he doesn't like it. Generally though, my eldest has the self awareness to realise that I'm more than a Mum so he doesn't criticise like the OP's husband. Luckily DH doesn't like predictability either and he loves cooking so I don't need to worry about this it he'll suggest a nice takeaway.

Artisticscience · 08/06/2025 23:54

Chicken and chorizo jambalaya (bbc good food)

Risotto

Cajun chicken pasta (bbc good food)

Smoked salmon with orzo pasta (not sure about the recipe.. my daughter makes it)

Meatballs and spaghetti (a slightly different alternative to bolognese)

Thai curry (alternative to chicken curry)
.also lentil dahl is nice

Chicken kebabs with roasted vegetables or salad in wholemeal pitta bread.

Weekly regular meals in our house that might be suitable for your DH requirements...

smallstitch · 09/06/2025 00:24

Just looking past the fact that you do all the cooking…
Why not sit down one night and have a look through bbc food, you can search by ingredient. Come up with a list of meals that you both fancy and won’t take too much effort, and keep that list on your phone. Pick five each week.

cinders222 · 09/06/2025 00:30

Look up Fraser Reynolds, he has couple of cook books and Facebook, TikTok and insta. Healthy high protein meals with lots flavor. His Chicken sausage pasta, cheeseburger pasta and mental mental soup are some of my dh and dd favorite meals

Codlingmoths · 09/06/2025 00:57

Do you really enjoy cooking with fussy kids and a fussy dh? I don’t and I do generally enjoy cooking. So dh does more than half of it now, and I don’t veto any meals he suggests because I’d be cooking if I did. I’d suggest you try instead of going out next weekend your dh cooks something and you get takeaway or Cook meals or go out on Tuesday. You can make that every second weeks pattern and he can have full control over what he cooks. Honestly it’s the only way to get some respect.

Maddy70 · 09/06/2025 01:51

I would hatr to eat the same meals on rotation but is there any reason why he can't take his turn?

coxesorangepippin · 09/06/2025 02:32

God can someone with all these fancy ideas just come to my house and cook

😂

I'll pay you too!!!

He doesn't 'like' cooking. Also works late.

Doesn't stop him batch cooking at the weekend. Oh and he is into fitness as well so food has to be cooked from scratch.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/06/2025 09:39

Willow990 · 08/06/2025 17:28

Thanks all for the suggestions, plenty of food for thought (pun intended!)

DH is into his fitness so I need to keep things fairly healthy and cooked from scratch as much as possible.

Most of the meals I have suggested are fairly healthy, @Willow990 - I have type 2 diabetes, so I am trying to lose weight, and I have to restrict my intake of carbs. The macaroni cheese and cauliflower cheese are not as healthy, but as part of a diet that is pretty sensible overall, they are OK.

Blimey you need to lie down 😂😂 Clearly it’s a joke. Posters are always telling women to LTB for stupid mundane shit that is actually fine irl.
