Husband moaning about dinners

Willow990 · 08/06/2025 16:55

I meal prep every Sunday for dinners for the week ahead, a typical week looks something like this:

Mon - chilli or spaghetti bolognese
Tuesday - curry (chicken)
Wednesday - fish (salmon usually)
Thursday - stir fry
Friday - Steak

I told DH this morning what I was planning for next week and he asked whether there’s any chance of some variety and for me to try some new dishes. He works long days and I’m usually about to serve up as he walks through the door.

Has anyone got any ideas for how I could freshen things up?

Teriyaki salmon
yellow bean chicken or pork stir fry
Smoked salmon pasta
Pan fried cod w soy and garlic sauce
black pepper tofu or beef
glass noodles w chicken or pork or tofu

all pretty quick , like under 30 min meals..

Craftycorvid · 08/06/2025 21:05

How you can freshen things up? New partner who can cook?

whynotmereally · 08/06/2025 21:11

So what’s worked for me is to plan-

monday- salad or soup
Tuesday - pasta
wednesday potato/meat
thursdqy - rice

So each week I create a recipe based around the main ingredient/food type. So this week is-
Monday - salad with roast chicken and giant couscous
tues day - roasted veg , tomato’s and pasta
weds - omelette and jacket potato
Thursday - curry and rice

Only having to think of for example pasta dishes is a lot easier than trying to think of anything/every lthing

Dh cooks Friday/Saturday/sunday.

arcticpandas · 08/06/2025 21:13

You can tell him that he can do the meal prep during the week-end so he can just heat up his meal. My DH started complaining about how things were done so I don't prepare anything for him anymore. And I'm a sahm so I could. But there is no way that I will deal with an entitled man wanting things prepared in a certain way or complaining about this or that ingredient. You're going to nitpick- you do it yourself.

Thank you, I think DH would only really go for the chicken traybake (it sounds lovely!) - he has turned his nose up whenever I’ve suggested similar to the other things.

Beggars can't be choosers.

He isn't there to cook, and as you said, he doesn't like cooking anyway, even when he is there.

Oh this is an excellent thread to sum up Mumsnet.
If you suggest a male has asked for something, even if the OP has taken it onboard and asked for ideas - you get the pitch fork brigade.

"Divorce him"
"Tell him to get out"
"Eat from the dogs bowl in future"
"I'd get a forensic accountant, he likely has an OW"

It really is a funny site for crazy people

laclochette · 08/06/2025 21:32

Those roasting tin recipe books are amazing for easy dinners that are also interesting and yummy. Get some of the extensive series, and go through them and each mark with post-its the recipes you'd like to eat. Whichever you both post-it go into your repertoire.

OP's title is moan. He is moaning, not asking politely or coming up with his own suggestions.

It isn't crazy to find that rude.

Is that why you are here? Because you are crazy?

SomethingFun · 08/06/2025 21:35

Yes cos what all women should be doing is running round facilitating men’s lives.

I get sick of meal planning and the moaning from the dc about what we have for tea so everyone has to pick a meal each for the week and then 3 are left for the meal planner to fit it. My dh can do a meal plan and he works full time - I best check his willy hasn’t fallen off or something.

IAmNeverThePerson · 08/06/2025 21:39

Ocado recipes are pretty good if you are out of ideas.

BlueMum16 · 08/06/2025 21:42

We do pulled pork - slow cooker with garlic passata. Really easy while I'm working all day.

Different curries, we use cauliflowers rice some weeks to mix it up

Paella

Risotto -5 ingredients one is simple and quick.

We need something in 15-20 mins.

The thread title is 'husband moaning about dinners'. The tone was set by OP. We're not making this shit up.

Simple question really.

Ah, you see just because a lot of crazy people are in one place, does not mean that all people in one place are crazy.

Basic logic

ClairDeLaLune · 08/06/2025 21:59

I batch cook a lot so I can often just get stuff out of the freezer. Things that are good for that in addition to what you make are:
chicken Thai green curry
lamb casserole
lasagne
shepherd’s pie
tuna pasta bake

Other ideas: pesto pasta, risotto, paella, sausages and mash, baked potatoes with a choice of toppings.

ChaliceinWonderland · 08/06/2025 22:04

I agree with him it does sound dull. Instead why not
Have a no plan week ? Or food Bank it on weds like we do?
Or make your own up from fridge ingredients? I'd be bored too if my wife told me we had the same old on rotation. Except i have no wife it's just me!

Or even better I would tell him it is his turn to do the cooking this week including the meal planning

So when he walks through the door he can start preparing a meal which will obviously be much later than usual, but that would be all right or something to criticise him for.

Or he could do what OP does and prep meals at the weekend.

He can batch cook at the weekend so it is prepared in advance. I am sure he is capable of putting it in the microwave.
