To think you can still have this issue in a detached

ThisLovingBlue · 08/06/2025 11:25

To think you can still suffer from neighbour noise in a detached? As in I know not connected through neighbour walls but other noise from outside

Has it been worth it if youve gone from a semi detached to a detached?

Unless the entire universe lived in silence then obviously there Is going to be noise outside ?! I can hear outside noise if I’m outside. But not if I’m inside….

TheNightingalesStarling · 08/06/2025 11:27

It depends how close houses are to each other. Some "detached" houses are practically touching.

Don’t you ever open your windows?

We open the patio doors on warm days and can hear traffic and birds and dogs barking and kids playing in gardens and couples arguing………

4forksache · 08/06/2025 11:30

And it depends on the soundproofing of the semi detached. They aren’t all created equal.
Living in a detached house has got to be better noise wise, but how much better depends on the above.

Saggyoldclothbody · 08/06/2025 11:31

You will hear noise but it’s a completely different level and I would never want to go back to a semi, terrace or flat.

MelOfTheRoses · 08/06/2025 11:32

Our attached garage forms the party wall, and we used to get a lot of noise from a previous neighbour's children using it for football. It was like living in a drum.

Redrosesposies · 08/06/2025 11:33

The only thing a detached house gives you is the reduction in noise from the other side of the wall, unless you are in the middle of a field a good distance from anyone else.
If you are anywhere else you still have to put up with the sound of people living their lives. If you can find neighbours without barking dogs, screaming kids and who don't play music, you're onto winner even if you're not detached.

ThisLovingBlue · 08/06/2025 11:34

Just wondering if I should stretch myself to try and buy a detached or install soundproofing in my semi detached as I can hear my neighbours cough and microwave thats how bad the soundproofing is :(

If the detached you move to has sufficient ground around it that you can't see / hear your neighbours, then no, the issue will be gone. All other scenarios vastly reduce the issue, but it probably won't go away completely. Depends what it is that bothers you, how much it bothers you, and how much you are prepared to spend to eliminate it.

Yes of course but that’s my choice invite the outside in! That’s what I mean about of course there is noise ( unless you’re very remote! )Our bifolds are open all day everyday in the summer and bedroom windows too. Today I can’t hear anything, but sometimes I can hear kids playing etc. we don’t really get cars so no traffic noise. If im inside with doors shut then I can’t hear anything.

Midnightlove · 08/06/2025 11:35

A detached is much better, wouldn't live in a semi again unless I had no choice

Was thinking that might take about 2 years of saving every penny for me to afford a budget detached around here

Yes we had very bad neighbour noise issues in our detached house, the people at the bottom of the garden (and sideways a bit) played very loud music that we could hear throughout our house when they had their regular summer parties. They even used to play it while mowing the lawn, and had the sound louder than their ride-on mower. We both had massive gardens but the sound just carried straight through our windows even when closed. God knows what sound system they had. It was rural though and there wasn't really anything we could do about it (non-UK).

Chints · 08/06/2025 11:38

That day to day everyday living noise is much reduced in a detached. TVs, washing machines, normal conversation. And assuming people do their singing and violin practice with the window closed, it is a very different experience for the neighbours. Obviously you can still hear each other in the garden!

user1471538283 · 08/06/2025 11:38

I hope to never share walls again. I'm detached and our gardens touch but I rarely hear my neighbours. But then I live in a very quiet part of a very quiet village.

We are link attached by a garage. Our neighbour got a running machine… we could hear thump, thump, thump. I figured that like me and the novelty would wear off. It did, especially after dd loudly said “what’s that noise?! Is that Emma running!” 🙈 dd was about 7 and had no concept that if we could hear her she could probably hear us!

Nourishinghandcream · 08/06/2025 11:43

Would never go back to an attached house, regardless of it's age or construction, being in a detached is lovely.
Of course you still hear some noise, through the windows (especially if like us you never close the trickle vents) and when doors are open but knowing you aren't going to hear anything through the walls is pure bliss.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 08/06/2025 11:44

We’re detached with a good distance between houses. When there’s been newborns next door we can hear in the night with windows open, not loud enough to actually disturb us, but loud enough for us to feel suitably sympathetic for their poor mum who I knew was having a tough time. I don’t think I’ve ever heard any other indoor noises from our neighbours. I will admit it’s very nice.

ThisLovingBlue · 08/06/2025 11:45

Thx

Looking on rightmove I need to save every penny I have and have a minimal life for about 2 years then I can just about afford it

would sell my poorly built semi detached

Then yes a detached house will stop all that. You’ll still hear the noise you currently hear from outside the house. You just won’t hear the inside noise.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/06/2025 11:46

Would never go back to a semi, detached houses are way better re sound travelling. Obvs there is still noise, eg outside, if windows are open, etc, but it’s nothing to hearing the minutiae of your neighbours lives like you can do in a semi. Having had both, a detached is worth the money in my view.

@Purplecatshopaholic ok should I save every penny for 2 years and try to do it move from my semi to a detached

Live in a link detached and deliberately brought one where I’m the end house and adjoining neighbour’s wall (so where their lounge/kitchen is) is linked to my outside garage wall and it’s bliss. Can’t hear a sound. I deliberately did this as feared as a PP said if you’re in a linked with neighbours either side and one has converted their garage to a kids playroom and it’s the party wall to your lounge or some such it could be hellish!

The onky noise I hear is when windows are open and just kids/radio not a big deal really as it’s only for a few weeks each year thanks to the Great British weather!

Life changing for me, can go to sleep whenever without noise, read in silence, wfh and study for my work exams in silence!

Then blast music and watch films on loud any time of day without worrying!

It’s a personal choice. That’s what I did, because I found a semi just too noisy - I don’t mind outside noise but hearing my neighbours coughing, or their tv or microwave, is too much. It was worth it for me. You need to decide how hard it is for you to cope with the noise and would soundproofing rather than moving be the answer. I never even considered soundproofing, I just bought a detached house.

@Purplecatshopaholic thats great advice thank you!

There are some companies online that do soundproofing where they build a fake wall and materials over it but it would prob cost £££ no guarantee it would work
