Pie and a ‘selected’ drink … to think this is an insane cost?

Recently seen an ‘offer’ of 19 pounds for a pie and selected drink every Thursday evening between 4-7.

This is a standard country pub on the outskirts of an average town.

I absolutely loving eating out and me and dh have a pretty decent income yet we cannot justify paying these prices anymore. If we both ordered this ‘deal’ it would be 38 quid! That’s without a desert or a coffee.

AIBU to think soon these places will collapse? Or are people still happy to spend on it?

Clarkson pub? As in Jeremy. People will pay tons for rich farmer Jeremy.

Flashahah · 06/06/2025 12:37

Depends on the chain, I suppose!

IamSmarticus · 06/06/2025 12:37

I would pay it if I was planning on going out for something to eat. That's seems a pretty average price to me.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 06/06/2025 12:39

Is it just like a pie from Greggs or a bakery. Or a pie with sides and gravy: so a full meal. Plus a drink for under £20 is the way meals out are headed.

toomuchfaff · 06/06/2025 12:39

I saw the spat about Jezza pub with a customer, people queue down the lane to get on the farm, in the shop and now in the pub.. of course they should charge what they think the produce is worth - incorporating all staffing costs, and other associated costs to run the business and make profit.

YABU to think a business shouldn't serve the quality and charge what they want, but YANBU to not go...

JDM625 · 06/06/2025 12:39

Was the pie made in the pub and served with chips and a salad? Ok.

If it was just a re-heated, frozen pie on a plate and a drink- terrible value!

Ifailed · 06/06/2025 12:41

More importantly is it a proper pie, or just something thrown into a dish with a pastry lid?

Mindymomo · 06/06/2025 12:42

We’ve recently returned from the Isle of Wight, most standard meals, fish and chips, lasagne, sausage and mash, pie and mash were all around the £19 mark. Same here in Surrey, an average burger and chips is around £18.

ShuffleHopStepForgetStep · 06/06/2025 12:44

Depends on the pub, depends on the pie.

Ohhh, I fancy a nice steak and kidney now, or maybe something gamey in a rich gravy... 🤤

MidnightPatrol · 06/06/2025 12:44

Even a pint is £6-7 now.

So £19 for a meal (assuming it’s pie with a side of some sort) plus a drink sounds ok…?

Eating out is expensive - tbh if I got a bil of £38 got two for dinner I’d think that was excellent!

Jamesblonde2 · 06/06/2025 12:45

If it’s with veg, gravy etc so a full meal, and alcoholic drink then that’s ok.

TheAutumnCrow · 06/06/2025 12:45

Is that a decent sized pie, with gravy, chips/wedges, vegetables, salad ..? With the chance to ask for any left over pie to be boxed to take home? Tap water available?

I'd also ask if I could have coffee or tea as the 'selected drink' rather than a pint of grim tasting lager or teeny naff wine or whatever.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 06/06/2025 12:46

Yeah in Manchester now a main can be easy £15-25 in pretty normal places. Apart from spoons.

Overheads food, wages, energy costs have increased for all of us so it’s no surprise it hits eating out too.

Renabrook · 06/06/2025 12:46

Well they have to pay their costs and staff

yeesh · 06/06/2025 12:46

It seems like a normal price for a country pub but not a very good ‘offer’.

Hoplolly · 06/06/2025 12:47

My local pub, a decent homemade pie (I'm assuming with veg and chips) would probably be around £18 and then a glass of wine is about £9 so sounds reasonable on that basis to me.

If it's Wetherspoons, then it's overpriced.

Fifthtimelucky · 06/06/2025 13:09

I ate out last week at a country pub in Devon. The steak and ale pie was £15.00. It was homemade and served with excellent gravy, chips and lots of vegetables.

I’d say for a pie like that and a drink £19 could be a good deal, but it would depend on the drink!

BobbyBiscuits · 06/06/2025 13:11

The pie just on its own? Not with mash, veg etc?
And is it a proper freshly made pie or a pukka pies jobbo? And what drink? Probably fosters or some shite, right?

Yeah that doesn't sound good at all! But maybe the pie is gorgeous with loads of filing and comes with sides?

Monicaaa · 06/06/2025 13:17

Awww you just reminded me of my Dad @Ifailed and his 'proper pie' views (he agreed with you!)
Thank you, lovely memory!

Flashahah · 06/06/2025 12:37

Depends on the chain, I suppose!

My local independent pub does lie and drink for £20

Summerisere · 06/06/2025 13:28

Is it just a pie?

ChunkingDreamer · 06/06/2025 13:32

Where I am (up North), you can get a decent homemade steak pie with homemade chips and sides, and a drink for about £12, so I don't think it's excessive if you get sides with your pie, and the pie is good quality. if it's some cheap reheated pie on its own, then it seems a bit steep.

KoiTetra · 06/06/2025 13:36

If it is serving good pub food not chain crap then I would say you wont find a main for under £15 these days and most will be £20-25.

Drinks are £4.50 - 7 a drink so assuming it is a full meal and not just a pie I would say £19 for a pie and drink is fairly good price.

Inflation has hit meals out really hard! Is it expensive, yes. Is that because the pub is trying to make huge profits, no.

Think about the costs that come with it, most pubs are older buildings and cost a lot to run / upkeep. The cost of gas/electric especially to run a kitchen as gone through the roof.

Staff aren't cheap especially with new taxes

Finally the cost of buying the ingredients has gone up.

bluebunnyjacket · 06/06/2025 13:39

Sounds standard these days. £15 for a main is about right and then £4 for a drink is cheap.

We just paid £15.95 for a breakfast!

Sofiewoo · 06/06/2025 13:41

A meal and a drink for £19 sounds fine. A pub meal is often around £20 these days and this one includes a drink.
If you don’t think it’s worth it you don’t have to go.
