They have removed the laughing emoji as it was being used as a passive aggressive response and posters were upset by this? If this the reason it was removed?

I often wonder how some people navigate life and manage to survive a day if a laughing emoji on one of their posts upsets them.

Dangermoo · 05/06/2025 23:05

It was being used for serious posts. One was about a poster being subjected to racism and somebody reacted with the funny emoji. Always the mindless minority who spoil it for everyone else.

Abitofalark · 05/06/2025 23:06

Did mumsnet consult about this or once they'd decided, put out a notice that it was being removed? I haven't seen anything like that.

EllieRosie · 05/06/2025 23:07

I’ve just checked my posts and as far as I’m aware no-one else can see reactions others have made. How odd to remove an emoji, this place is utter madness at times.

MarxistMags · 05/06/2025 23:09

Yes please.

grizzlyoldbear · 05/06/2025 23:10

@Dangermoo ok, not cool at all, I'm sorry that happened. I hope you complained about the user, since the only person that could see the emoticon is the poster.

It wasn't me Grizzly. I saw it posted somewhere that it had happened.

Please don't... It was mainly used passive aggressively

This is a massive exaggeration.

A few posters said it was being used in a 'bullying' way.

But given the amount of members on this site, there's no way it was 'mainly' used passive aggressively.

A few people misused it and instead of dealing with those people, MNHQ decided to remove it for everyone.

Which tells you Mumsnet knew the bigger picture here doesn't it ?

I didn't know it had gone until I went to use the laugh one yesterday for a funny post that was a play on words about Dickens, the novelist.
Don't see the sense in removing it. I often see posts that strike me as witty, sharp or amusing in some way and want to register that without fuss. It's a quick and easy way to do it without intruding upon a thread.

Agree, absolutely ridiculous it’s gone, people really need to grow a thicker skin or not be on Mumsnet at all if they can’t cope with a laughing emoji.

I saw a thread about it, can’t find it now. People complaining about passive aggression something or other.

This is one.

There were others

gamerchick · 05/06/2025 23:21

The emoji was being used to bully on serious topics and distressed posters.

It wasn't just taken off because of sayso. It was monitored for a time first.

That should probably tell people everything they need to know tbh.

I've never seen so much fuss over a ruddy smiley. It's weird.

It would be interesting to see if MN went though every single post to count what they thought were passive aggressive laugh emojis on them. Frankly, I don’t think they did.

At the end of the day MN introduced the reactions, they could at least have had a poll or posted for opinions without simply removing them.

It’s laughable that people get upset over a little face that someone has posted in a reaction to what they’ve typed. Perhaps the internet isn’t the place for people who are so easily upset? No-one else can see the reactions. It’s not like they’re being publicly shamed is it?

grizzlyoldbear · 05/06/2025 23:24

There’s a difference between sharing a laugh and using it to poke at someone who’s already upset. Can't believe people use it like that! If it’s being used that way, it’s the users who should be removed, not the emoji.

Are you a Mod as you appear to know an awful lot about monitoring of emojis, some of us find it weird that people get upset over a smiley face…

TeaAndTattoos · 05/06/2025 23:28

I didn’t even know that had gone.

Viviennemary · 05/06/2025 23:28

PersephoneSmith · 05/06/2025 22:47

Apparently it was used to mock people having a hard time.
I think we can assume that if people were upset about it, and reported it, it’s probably true.

I agree. Don't bring it back.

No, it tells me they went for the easiest option - a blanket ban.

You can't tell me that out of millions of MN users it was 'mainly' being used like that.

INeedAnotherName · 05/06/2025 23:38

It was removed because of twats using it in the wrong way. MNHQ started monitoring it and decided there were too many twats using it so it got removed. As ever the twats ruin it for everyone. Blame them.

begone25 · 06/06/2025 07:47

I wish they would make more emojis available to use on the app, is ‘thanks’ the same as agree? Or does it come up as something different?

I agree. For those people who are such delicate flowers maybe MN isn't the place for them.

Have to agree

So people going through a hard time, or those with anxiety or worries, shouldn't be coming here for support? Are you serious?

You can still appreciate someone's humour by responding to them publicly. You've not been denied freedom of expression. But sending mocking emojis privately isn't on. No-one sees them but the recipient so the sender doesn't get called out on it, and the recipient feels alone in their hurt.

It's all very well people on here saying that they only use it in the way it's intended. Other people clearly are not, or HQ wouldn't have taken the action that they have.

That's actually a very good point.
