I think what this thread mostly shows is the extremely poor reading comprehension on Mumsnet.

ITUnhelpdesk · 06/06/2025 08:51

I detest lip filler and think it’s the worst development in the ‘beauty’ industry, but nobody is getting that done to look ‘rich’ are they?!

Since the advent of cheap credit, there is very little regarding possessions to indicate whether someone is rich or poor. People have different tastes.

Generally social status is gleaned from an overall impression; manners, the way a person speaks, the way they hold themselves, conversation topics. We just know. We have been brought up from birth to instinctively recognise these things. It’s a cultural/tribal thing. Stand a load of people next to each other naked we would prob still have a fairly good hit rate identifying rich/posh people. It’s important in a tribal system to recognise those who hold power/have social standing.

Sometimes possessions jar with this fundamental perception, it looks fake, in a way threatening, we feel uneasy at the incongruous nature of it.

A rich person wearing a large logo designer top will look remarkably different to a poor person wearing the same top. The aristocrat wearing 25 year old clothes driving a 15 year old car will still look rich, a poor person doing this with usually look poor.

If you want to look rich (for what ever reason) you need to start on the inside not designer outlets.

I think you're conflating wealth with social background. The things you believe mean you just 'know', when you actually name them as oppose to lumping them together as something you recognise by intuition, are simply products of upbringing, environment and education, which are obviously linked to wealth, but don't require it. Just as wealth can be present without these traits. Your theory would mean that people would assess a naked Wayne Rooney (apologies if its too early in the day for that mental image!) as less wealthy than a naked unemployed academic with a home counties accent.

Don’t know if anyone else has said it…..but coasters on tables 👀😂
My Nana told me that years ago 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Rich people who’ve paid a lot of money for amazing quality furniture know the finish won’t get ruined by a drink ring.
People who’ve bought budget furniture than looks bougie use coasters because the finish is crappy quality and will get ruined by drink rings.

Edited

But that’s a practical decision for people who can’t afford ‘amazing quality furniture’ surely. It’s not about trying to look rich?

People are interpreting the OP in a variety of ways!

That's quite sad, actually.

It’s incredibly common. There are all sorts of MH issues and even new disgnoses that stem from SM fantasy posting.

DancingNotDrowning · 06/06/2025 08:57

isthismylifenow · 06/06/2025 08:38

Sure. The poster refers to the fact they do not eat food, but others in the household do.

Unless this is a joke, could it not be that this particular poster doesn't consume food due to a medical issue, perhaps has a feeding tube?

And if this is the case, being referred to as a squid is hardly humorous.

The poster was literally called @SquashedSquid Grin

I will admit I assumed they meant they didn’t eat M&S food.

If you drop casual references to the fact you don’t eat any food in posts without context I don’t think you can be too surprised if people ask why. Confused

I assumed a typo.

This thread is horrible.

People are so judgemental over the most ridiculous things.

KaleQueen · 06/06/2025 09:39

Berlinwanderer · 06/06/2025 08:43

Ill fitting, mainly too tight or too short clothes. Went to a wedding last year. Lovely people but not much money at all. Let’s just say the bride in her late 50s was poured into a dress and there was very little left to the imagination. The groom was wearing one of those tweedy suits with waist coat, akin to something worn at a shoot. Not judging them at all but why dress for a night club at your wedding..

Edited

Do you mean ‘I was kindly invited to a wedding last year. I took their hospitality, was charming to their faces, but sneered inwardly at their wedding clothes’

bet you’re absolute joy to know in real life 😂

I thought the same. Judgemental and snobby.

Kuretake · 06/06/2025 08:23

What is it you fund peculiar here? That not everyone you know dresses the same?

I should have clarified... I find the idea that someone who is rich must look rich peculiar. Like there has to be a uniform...

You are advertising that you have money, though, and you are gloating.

I doubt anyone is that interested in where you sit on the plane. I've travelled first class quite a lot - never paying for it but work related. Nobody has ever reacted like that. If you're getting looks at hatred at all, it'll be something else.

Lol @bert3400 are you sure the looks arnt because your getting on the plane wrong as every flight I've ever been on has a seperate entrance or boarding time for first & business class passengers who also have access to private lounges & board facing the direction there heading not walk back to front watching people give them dirty looks about their track suits 😂 sounds like your doing first class wrong even if your paying for it

PinkMagpie · 06/06/2025 10:28

The sneering on this thread! The naice middle class uniform of Oliver Bonas, Boden, Ganni, Lucy and Yak etc looks equally unappealing to some people. Let people like what they like

ITUnhelpdesk · 06/06/2025 10:30

bert3400 · 05/06/2025 22:53

People who actually have money don't need to advertise it. I love nothing more than rocking up to BC or First in a comfortable track suit and watching all these glammed up women (especially) with their fake LV/Dior bags hoping to get upgraded...the look of hatred when I waddle on the plane and turn left .... because I actually paid for my ticket... sorry I'm not normally a gloater but airports definitely do something to some people including me 😁

the look of hatred

hatred? Really?!

But how do you know they’re waiting to be upgraded? How do you know anything about them?

I suspect this is your insecurity showing or you’re not comfortable with how you earned your wealth?

Not judging them? Really? "Lovely people but not much money at all. "

I think yours is the most vile, judgemental post in this whole thread, which is saying something!

And FYI , my boss is the wealthiest person I know (from a wealthy family) and every piece of his clothing is ill-fitting! Family money does not give you great style!

KaleQueen · 06/06/2025 10:49

This thread is awful but also weirdly comforting (personally) as I don’t think I’ve ever once judged anyone on what they wear, drive, eat, how they shop.
PS I live in a really mixed area and it’s true that many people have really ‘good’ new cars but perhaps small and sometimes council homes. And designer gear. And do you know what I think about that? Nothing! If I was to give it some thought I’d think ‘good for them, that’s what makes them happy’
If I arrived at a wedding with the bride in a mini dress I’d think….good for her, that makes her happy.
If I saw a young woman with a Michael Kors bag I’d think…nothing?

However, if I overheard someone with money smugly pulling other people down because they were ‘clearly trying to look rich when they’re not’ I’d think ….what a nasty bitter horrid piece of work you are.

edited to add/suggest: next time you lot see someone who is ‘clearly broke’ ‘trying to look like they’re not’ why don’t you go up to them and point it out. Tell them ‘I see you’re driving a shiny new Range Rover Evoque but I know you live in a council house so you’re clearly trying to look rich when you’re not rich, like me’. And see what happens 😂

HRTQueen · 06/06/2025 11:01

these threads are never fun

so what if someone has a fake LV bag or likes logo tops or likes long nails, to some people these are very glamorous

its snobbery us poorer people should know our place

we don't all want to walk round looking like we are dressed in over sized children's clothes with out children looking the right type of uniformed scruffy to show we are of a certain class

ScrewedByFunding · 06/06/2025 11:03

Please see my comment about Motability. Also. Where do you suggest getting an older car from if nobody ever buys them new?! Think about that for a minute……. As I said, Motability currently have 69,000 (brand new) vehicles on the road and two thirds of those are SUVs. Why? Because those of us who physically cannot bend in any way shape or form, can only get into higher up vehicles such as SUVs & MPVs. That’s why crossovers have become so popular (especially non-4x4 ones), elderly & disabled drivers!
I can assure you, I am not trying to be impressive with my 72 plate large SUV I’m just trying to have a vehicle I can actually get into, keep my mobility scooter in on its hoist and also get my child in there somewhere. What you can’t see, is that there’s only one rear seat, my boot is full of mobility scooter so nowhere for shopping and the driver’s side is fully adapted.

I say this kindly.

There are 41 million licensed vehicles in the UK. 69,000 of those of which you mention are a drop in the ocean in comparison to the main point at hand, wouldn't you agree?

I also think it's fantastic that disabled people have increased accessibility in daily life. The. Re number plate comment was not aimed at

  1. Cash buyers/genuinely wealthy individuals
  2. Disabled drivers
  3. Those who are given one for work purposes

Apologies for any confusion there.

A Range Rover in a terraced house.

Just curious , how do you get it through the front door?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 06/06/2025 11:17

You know, there are tons of threads on Mumsnet where people talk about having £30 in their bank account to last until next week, or not being able to afford swimming lessons for their kids, or worrying about the cost of school shoes.

How do you think they might feel seeing things like Botox and new cars described as signs of being "broke"?

Lifeofthepartay · 06/06/2025 11:21

Following "old money" trends, having very obvious cosmetic procedures on your face, throwing parties in fancy places but asking guests to pay for their own meals and asking for an specific present on top of that, having a flashy car but a not very nice home, having a 75 inch TV in each room but not a single book in sight.

I don’t think it should be taken down. Let it stay. Let people show their sad little judgy selves up. Most of the people offering ‘examples’ wouldn’t last five minutes if they had to swap places with the people they’re looking down on.
