Weird, dark underbelly to this place?

The Algarve?

This poor man who recently went missing on his stag do and was very sadly found dead.
Madeleine McCann of course
Reading up on things and apparently so many reports of people going missing over the years or bodies being found

Feels strange

Yep. It wasn't just MM, there were several other children. One German child in 1997 was kidnapped off the beach when he ran ahead of his parents. The most awful case for me is Rui Pedro, he was trafficked from the Algarve and was sighted in abuse imagery years later 😢 unfortunately his family were poor so the case did not get same attention MM's did.

OMFG!

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 05/06/2025 17:33

Was the Algarve not known as a paedophiles playground before Madeline went missing?

SnakesAndArrows · 05/06/2025 17:40

MoominUnderWater · 05/06/2025 15:26

I thought this was going to be a thread about MN having a dark underbelly. Am a bit disappointed.

Algarve…lots of tourists getting drunk and falling off balconies, jumping off walls, etc. alongside non drinking related accidents and an infamous paedophile/child abduction case.

I think this thread is reminding us that MN does indeed have a dark underbelly where people leap to bizarre conclusions based on ignorance and prejudice.

BellissimoGecko · 05/06/2025 17:41

Don’t be so daft. The bloke would have got pissed and got lost, and fallen. No mystery about it.

Whaleandsnail6 · 05/06/2025 17:42

Almondcakefortea · 05/06/2025 16:46

This is not true

How on earth do you know that is not true.

I think many tourist hotspots unfortunately have deaths due to misadventure and people being unfamiliar, intoxicated and letting their gaurd down on holiday. Obviously this is very sad but I dont think points to anything shady or conspiracy theory

I disagree that the MM case points to dark underbelly in Portugal...MM went missing because her parents thought it a good idea to leave 3 toddlers alone in an apartment whilst they went out for the night.

LogicalBlodge · 05/06/2025 17:14

Hate Portugal...went there...ended up needing surgery after a surfing accident. The instructor literally caused it to happen by distracting me. After telling me in the training never get distracted. Awful.

Edited

I’m not sure you can blame Portugal for that?

Exactly

But it's the modern way of the 2020s to then watch TikTok videos or equivalent where some grifter links a completely discrete incident, to something else that happened 18 years ago,

and then those who want to be seen as having more knowledge, can passionately tell the rest of us how the mainstream media is fooling us

I live here and feel very safe. I am comfortable walking back alone to our house late at night. I’m in a town but not a resort town.

There is crime but rates are still low for Europe, particularly for violent crime. There is the usual opportunistic petty crime, particularly in busy resorts. It was a bit of an eye-opener to hear how openly people are offered hard drugs on Vilamoura Marina and how many lap dancing places there are to service the golfers. There is no lap dancing establishment in my town as far as I am aware.

The poor McCann’s were incredibly unlucky and it seems police are proceeding on the basis that a German national committed the crime.

I’m surprised and shocked to hear about the young girl being whistled at. I’ve seen it a lot in Italy, England and France but not here. Where were you @Poopeepoopee? That’s horrible.

My youngest is disabled and I find strangers of both sexes so helpful here, literally running to help if they see me struggling with the wheelchair on rough ground.

I regularly see reels and photos of carnage on the strip in Albufeira but that is a stag and hen ghetto and the rest of the Algarve isn’t like that in my experience.

Edited

You’ve seen children wolf whistled in England, Italy and France?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 05/06/2025 17:47

Poopeepoopee · 05/06/2025 15:29

We had a holiday there with our kids including our daughter in year 6 of primary school who was regularly wolf whistled at. When she was out with us. Wearing childrens clothing, nothing provocative.

They also have one of the highest heroin addicts in the world.

Sadly, think it's us Scots who hold the title for most heroin addicts per capita 😥

Chickaflicks · 05/06/2025 17:47

Don’t know specificly about the Algarve but I spent 6 weeks walking pretty much the length of Portugal last year. As a lone female, I didn’t feel unsafe once. Granted I wasn’t in the most ‘touristy’ places, apart from walking through Lisbon and Porto. But honestly it felt a hell of a lot safer than doing a similar thing elsewhere.

I even watched a few football matches in bars along the way, just because why not, and as a lone female in a bar I felt completely fine. Can’t say I’d be unbothered in a uk pub alone when a football match is on. Especially as I was openly supporting the British teams against the local teams in the champions league matches.

And as for the drugs, -Scotland, that’s officially the worst place for drugs in the world. And has been for years. So the uk can hardly talk.

The US took that crown away from us a number of years ago, presumably due to the proliferation of Fentanyl

LittleHouseOnThePrarie · 05/06/2025 17:59

It's sad , very, but he jumped over a wall and didn't know there was a cliff drop on the other side.

How is that mysterious @Almondcakefortea ?

BusyExpert · 05/06/2025 18:06

actually children have been going missing in Portugal for some time at the time of Madeleine Mcanns disappearance it was reported about Portuguese children missing from the Algarve and in each case the approach taken by the police was the parents had killed them and were covering it up.

Hoppinggreen · 05/06/2025 18:08

Almondcakefortea · 05/06/2025 15:31

Unlikely she was wolf whistled at by Portuguese, generally not in their nature

Yes, very unlikely to be locals

Just HOW high does one have to be to be the highest heroin addict in the world?! That's pretty impressive

SpikyCoconut · 05/06/2025 18:23

Just read the whole thread and realised others took the same conclusion about this unfathomably 'high' heroin addict. Apologies.
I'll take this opportunity to give an example of blatant internalised misogyny however! Assumptions ahoy to give that title to a bloke.

Why can't a woman take the title of the highest heroin addict for a change.

MrsSunshine2b · 05/06/2025 18:35

Anywhere marketed as a party destination for tourists is going to have quite a bit of crime and drunken idiocy going on. Even within small towns there will be streets which are lovely, family-oriented places and streets full of drunken yobbos with their tops off, and obviously occasionally the yobbos will wander into the nicer bits and vice versa.

I was all ready to be told you could access the dark web from the gardening topic.

see this is why we need to bring back the laughter reaction!

OP, MMC was nearly 20 years ago now, how many people do you think have visited (let alone lived in) the area since then?

My colleague is Portugese and says it has really high rates of sex trafficking, sex crimes, DV and infanticide /femicide

She would never live there again
