Weird, dark underbelly to this place?

Almondcakefortea · 05/06/2025 15:24

The Algarve?

This poor man who recently went missing on his stag do and was very sadly found dead.
Madeleine McCann of course
Reading up on things and apparently so many reports of people going missing over the years or bodies being found

Feels strange

We've been to the algarve area several times & stayed in several resorts & I've never noticed, it's quite a big area & the area's outside of the resorts look poor but I think a dark underbelly is a bit over the top.

You won’t notice on holiday, that’s the point

I don’t think pedophiles have a specific nationality.

I’m probably too old now, but from being young and good looking back then, it never happened, never witnessed it, dh tells he’s never witnessed it with friends and colleagues here
I was regularly wolf whistled and stared at in the Uk, Italy etc
Beautiful girls are topless with thongs on on the beach, they don’t get stared at, the boys grow up with nudity around and it being natural, it’s much less in their nature in terms of catcalling etc
Pedophiles can be anyone obviously

I hope they find something in the dig. Something that would give the family closure and help bring the perpetrator to justice.

Misspotterer · 05/06/2025 16:05

The man who went missing got drunk and jumped over a wall to his death by the looks of it. No mysterious underbelly, just alcohol consumption and unfamiliar surroundings. Your imagination is running away with you OP.

This is not true

Went there once and didn’t like it (long before Madeline McCann). Something very off. Happy never to go back.

In what way would you say?

Do you know something the police don't?
There is CCTV of him doing it from what I've read?

We had a holiday there with our kids including our daughter in year 6 of primary school who was regularly wolf whistled at. When she was out with us. Wearing childrens clothing, nothing provocative.

He must take an awful lot of heroin to claim that title. Either that or he shoots up while in a hot air balloon.

Pinty · 05/06/2025 16:51

It's no more dark or dangerous than any other place.
People go missing in every country and sadly children are abducted in every country.

Misspotterer · 05/06/2025 16:52

Regardless., Portugal has a much lower crime rate than the UK. Currently drug gang warfare going on in my city. Shootings, properties and businessess getting set on fire. It's a major tourist destination too! Welcome to Edinburgh.
A young girl raped in the city centre last weekend, a young boy stabbed, sadly neither that unusual either.

Todayisaday · 05/06/2025 16:56

There is a dark underbelly to every place, but there are definitely a few places the fuck ups, paedos and weirdos congregate. Places along the drug smuggling routes. Portugal and algarve area is the gateway for cocaine into europe apparently. It stands to reason of you're doing one major thing on the wrong side of the law you are likely doing many things on the wrong side of the law.

SpidersAreShitheads · 05/06/2025 16:59

I visited once and the sea was cold and rough. It knocked me off my feet and pulled my bikini top down as I was trying to walk out of the water and back to the beach.

I was only a teenager.

Perverted Algarve ocean.

Really?

What's his name? 😁

fdwisfbr · 05/06/2025 17:05

I think there are a lot of places with a dark underbelly you wouldn't expect. I live in what seems to be an idyllic part of Austria but once you've lived here a while you find out all sorts of things that have gone on. Drug rings, people smuggling, incest, a lot of abuse of partners, a very high suicide rate, lots of fraud etc.

I wanted to comment something like this 🤣 love a funny typo that gives a sentence a whole new meaning.

lifeonmars100 · 05/06/2025 17:07

I think that when people go on holiday they sometimes forget to act with the thought and caution they usually apply to day-to-day life at home. They are in a holiday mind set and take risks they would not normally consider

That doesn’t sound like a dark underbelly to me?

What dark things have you experienced in your 20 years living there then?

Because Madeline McCann and the guy jumping over the balcony do not 🟰 dark underbelly.

LogicalBlodge · 05/06/2025 17:14

Hate Portugal...went there...ended up needing surgery after a surfing accident. The instructor literally caused it to happen by distracting me. After telling me in the training never get distracted. Awful.

Carlos, round the back of Albufeira market, near the coach park.

JacquesHarlow · 05/06/2025 17:16

People just love to draw inference and parallels these days. Conspiracy abounds. Nothing can actually just be two or three discrete incidents that happen to be in the same region or town.

You're literally taking two cases (one recent, one infamous and older) and linking them together

It's the modern way of the internet isn't it. Anything more than 2 things, happening in the same place, equals conspiracy.

I bet if you Google ' random holiday destination +people going missing' you would find the same.

2 high profile cases doesn't really = dark underbelly

I agree. Masses of deaths of holiday makers all over the world.

Brits on the piss, trying stronger drinks, letting loose with drugs and partying and getting dehydrated, drunk, drugged in heat and unfamiliar landscape and making stupid mistakes and decisions or being taken advantage of by other people or getting stung and bitten by critters.

ArtTheClown · 05/06/2025 17:27

Not sure about an underbelly but it's really overrated imo.

bestcatlife · 05/06/2025 17:29

Yep. It wasn't just MM, there were several other children. One German child in 1997 was kidnapped off the beach when he ran ahead of his parents. The most awful case for me is Rui Pedro, he was trafficked from the Algarve and was sighted in abuse imagery years later 😢 unfortunately his family were poor so the case did not get same attention MM's did.
