Feeling constantly exhausted despite 8.5 hours of sleep – how do people do it?

I’m really struggling with fatigue at the moment and wondering if anyone else feels the same or has any advice.

I make sure I get 8.5 hours of sleep a night – I need that much just to feel remotely functional. To manage that, I have to be in bed by 9:15pm, which already feels too early (especially with how light it still is in the evenings). I physically can’t go to bed any earlier, it just doesn’t feel right.

But even with 8.5 hours, I wake up feeling like I haven’t rested. And getting that much sleep means every morning is a mad rush to get to work on time – there’s no margin for a slower start or time for myself.

At work, I’m on total autopilot. I’m constantly yawning, struggling to focus, and counting down to the end of my shift. It’s frustrating because I know I’m not performing at my best and could be better at my job if I had more energy.

My husband does the cooking and washing up every evening because I just don’t have the energy after work. The house is constantly messy for the same reason – I just can’t bring myself to tidy when I get home.

We don’t even have children! I honestly have no idea how people manage full-time jobs, parenting, housework, hobbies, and a social life. I only work part-time and still spend most of my weekends recovering from the week.

Life just feels exhausting. Is this normal? How are people finding the energy to function? Would love to hear how others cope.

Get an apple watch and see if you are waking up a lot - ask you our partner to be honest - do you snore?

Why do you need to get up so early? Not everyone is designed to wake up by 7am. My natural waking time is 8.30 - 9am. I've tried all sorts over the years and any other schedule leads to me feeling like a zombie. A good test would be what time you'd get up on an long holiday from work. I've made sure my employment and lifestyle fits with my natural rhythm. I'm not changing my sleep genetics to fit in with the early bird society. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Appreciate not every one has the choice, which is why I only ever apply to jobs with flexi time.

Secondly any chance of being neurodivergent / autism / adhd? They all can affect energy levels.

What time do you work if you're not getting up until 9am? Are you a 10-6 type of person ?

I start work at 8 so need to be up early.

And at this time of year we need to be up at 5 for the dog walk as by the time we get home at 7am it's already getting too warm for her.

I feel OP i'm exhausted all the time too but feel like there's not really a choice.

It’s diet. 100%

This is not normal, OP! I have 3 young kids and a highly stressful job. I barely sit down all day and haven't had time to myself in several years. Get about 6 hours sleep a night as that's all there is time for!

Is your partner not starting to resent you? That would drive me mad to be honest. Do you plan to have children?

People have different levels of resilience, but this is nuts. You need to get assessed.

greengreyblue · 20/08/2025 06:49

Definitely not right to be like that at your age, no chn and getting lots of sleep. Your gp sounds awful. What do you eat?

Ive just been feeling tired recently as in asleep by 8pm and sleeping through to 6am but put it down to working, a 3 year old, house etc. Ended up going to doctors about it and had blood tests. Works out my vitamin B12, folic acid, thyroid & iron levels are all low! I’m now on tablets for B12 & folic aid, trying to increase iron through food & retesting thyroid in 4 weeks.

I would push for bloods if you are still feeling tired.

FrenchandSaunders · 20/08/2025 06:54

No improvement OP? What were the blood test results?

Empress13 · 20/08/2025 07:01

you could be anemic OP. Are your periods heavy? It can cause extreme fatigue. Be interesting to see what your blood test results show

MushMonster · 20/08/2025 07:07

You need to go to the doctor. This is not normal. You do have some health issue. I hope they find it quickly for you and it is an easy fix.
Best wishes.

Sorry didn’t mean to comment on this thread. I was meant to start a new thread on a different topic.

I did get a blood test. My ferritin was low and I have now started taking iron tablets . I’ve noticed a slight slight improvement so far, I have been taking them for three weeks now but I have skipped days as they give me a stomach ache. Everything else came back normal.

I feel like you plus nausea, no appetite etc. Ferritin also low, iron tablets also upset my stomach more. What number is your ferritin? I'm not convinced ferritin being low can make you feel ill and exhausted but hopefully I'm wrong.

Floradix liquid iron supplement was recommended to me by my dietician as it’s easier in the tummy than iron tablets. My friend agrees. Try that.
