Why do people get so excited over a jacket potato cart?

I see a lot of viral videos on fb and one of them is from the spud man. Now I like a jacket potato sometimes, but that still doesn’t mean I would camp out over night, or start queuing from 5.30 for a damn potato!! Even if the first order is free.

Why????

Why do people get so excited about cinema popcorn, why are they willing to pay £5 for a box of salted popcorn that costs literally pence in ingredients? You can buy a 500g bag of popping corn kernels in Sainsburys for £1.10, which would make you dozens and dozens of cinema boxes of popcorn worth.

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2025 13:54

It’s because when you go out ( or out out) people suddenly forget that’s it’s a fiver here or there and want the whole rip off experience ( myself included sometimes )
my late parents never ever ate out, not even a cup of tea from a stall! They didn’t think you needed any of this in your life!

I think people see it as part of the cinema experience I don't like popcorn but I will buy nachos with the plastic cheese sauce 😋 it's absolute rubbish but I do like it,

I've never understood why people can't watch a film without shoving over priced crap into themselves.

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2025 13:56

Yes, what is that ‘plasticy ‘ cheese you get on tacos and nanchos and has a funny smell ?
I admit I like proper cheddar cheese on things.

I have no idea I imagine it's a packet mix of sorts.

I haven’t been to the cinema for many years , but I can imagine the eating and drinking must be annoying. Most popcorn is rank at these multi plex locations, but it’s just a thing isn’t it ? Must eat it and it must be even more expensive now!

murasaki · 04/06/2025 14:09

People who can't last two hours without a snack are very odd.

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2025 14:11

Most cinemas seem to turn a blind eye to taking in your own sweets etc, it was an actual ‘ crime ‘ years ago , but I don’t think they care as much now. So I’m told anyway! Nothing been on that I want to watch for a long time at any cinema

Honestly if there’s anything worth getting excited over, it’s a decent jacket potato.

I agree

I had a lovely jacket potato last night (microwave first for 10 minutes wrap in kitchen roll - its a great little hack, then 10 minutes on the extra crisp setting in my airfryer) . With lots of butter (real) freshly grated cheese (none of that pre grated with potato starch on) and salad and lots of pepper. So delicious and satisfying. I can't wait to have the same meal tonight (cheap too)

Probably processed cheese product.

I like jacket potatoes but not microwaved ones. They are one of those things that are ultra-inefficient to do in the oven but much better done in it.

Air fryer is not bad.

ScottBakula · 04/06/2025 14:19

Spudman makes his own chilli and curry now ( and has been doing for a while) .
He definitely doesn't microwave the spuds !

He brings lots of people into Tamworth center which must be good for other shops too.

He has also raised the profile of kidney disease ( he has to have dialysis every day), and raised money for the causes too.

I like jacket spuds and would definitely get one if I was in the area , I'm not sure that I'd queue for so long tho.

outerspacepotato · 04/06/2025 14:22

Because 🥔 are yummy and filling and you can top them so many ways.

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2025 14:23

small business owners doing well is a good thing!
Im glad he was able to use social media to his advantage.

HRTQueen · 04/06/2025 14:24

I would buy a jacket potato from Spudman if is was in Tamwoth. I think its great that he has done so well and built up a successful business

Spud man looks dirty and unhygienic. I’ve watched him online empty the bins and then serve food with no hand washing. He slops (tinned) food all over so cross contamination for people with intolerances could be unwell.

On the other hand Spud Bros seem great but most most will be a flash in the pan.

Years ago Finch Bakery blew up, they had long queues everyday with people travelling 100s of miles but now whoever I see them posting it’s because they’ve had no custom.

Spud bros have been there for years and years, I always used to get the bags of new potatoes they did with salt and butter but the queues are huge now

finch bakery is dry. They used to be decent but since they expanded and went to postal and mass production the quality seems to have gone

I don’t know where the hype has come from . I used to love having a jacket potato from the stall in town but it was never a craze , just something you would have for dinner .

The one guy went to do a festival type thing and he was having to charge £12 for a jacket potato with the toppings due to their costs… but they still sold 8000 of them in the 3 days !

Some of these burger stands now are charging £8/9 for a box of cheesy chips .
Yet people are queuing for them .

What’s going on in the world 🤯

I paid 8 quid for a pancake with lemon on sugar on it at the Edinburgh Christmas market. The profit margin on that must have been enormous. It wasn't even very nice.

spoonbillstretford · 04/06/2025 14:28

I'd be quite excited to find a Spud u Like or a jacket potato cart if I were looking for a cheap & tasty lunch option but no, it's not queuing first thing in the morning round the block exciting.

Christmas markets are a total rip off !

That was funny. It made its way onto the news. Bet they made 50% of their annual turnover in one day.

My hairdresser drove an hour to queue for 2 hours for the Binley chippy. I'd been months earlier as I was at work around the corner and it was the nearest chippy on a Friday evening. This was before it was trending. I told him they weren't amazing chips but he didn't belive me until he'd wasted his time and fuel 😂 utter madness

CompleteOvaryAction · 04/06/2025 14:49

About 8 years ago my autistic DD was obsessed with the word "potato". She would say it, in various amusing different ways, about 200 times a day, and even wrote a funny song about baked potatoes being a good substitute for a sandwich. I would like to credit her with sparking the present craze. 🥰

Sjb85 · 04/06/2025 14:59

Because social media told them to. It's scary how people just flock like sheep for every trend.

Luckypinkduck · 04/06/2025 15:16

Spud bros are young lads that have taken on a very old traditional business. The jacket potato van has been in the same spot since the 1940s I believe. I say good for them for making such a success!

Luckypinkduck · 04/06/2025 15:22

Spud bros also support lots of local businesses, using local veg suppliers and doing videos with the other stalls near them or local restaurants.

(Promise I don't know/ work for them haha. I just think people are too quick to be down on ordinary folk doing well. Much prefer someone like them to be a viral success then another beauty range from a celeb or souless corporation).

Gogobabyshark · 04/06/2025 15:27

Is it wrong I really want a jacket potato now? It’s one of my favourite meals
