To think that 6 working days is a long time to have to wait for a new debit card?

Two fraudulent payments were attempted on my debit card tonight. No idea how or why. My bank flagged them up, and contacted me. I confirmed that I didn't recognise the transactions, they blocked the card and promised to send me a new one. All good.

But it's going to take 6 working days to send me a new card. AIBU to think that it's a bit U to expect me to be without a debit card for over a week? I do actually have another card that I can use, but it's annoying because everything is linked to the account that I can't currently use!

I don't understand why a card couldn't be printed and popped into the first class post tomorrow!

ETA: if it makes any difference, this is supposed to be a "premier" service.

Yes that’s far too long. Can you use Apple/Google Pay?

No, not on that account, because they have cancelled the card.

When I cancelled my card due to an unknown transaction/fraud it took about 5/6 days for my card to arrive. But as soon as it was issued my Apple Pay reactivated, could use it from the next day if I remember correctly.

AuditAngel · 03/06/2025 23:32

I have had similar, was told 5 working days for a card, arrived in 3 but PIN took longer, that was either 4 or 5

Redglitter · 03/06/2025 23:34

When my debit card was cancelled although the actual card took 5/6 days to arrive, a virtual version appeared on my online banking instantly. It meant I could set up all my online stuff there and then.

I assumed that was the norm now

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 03/06/2025 23:36

My card only took 3 days but my card was updated pretty much instantly on my app so I could add to Google wallet and also make any payments on line. My bank claims up to 6 working days but it never is.

NewPeaches · 03/06/2025 23:39

I cancelled my Barclays debit card due to a small fraudulent transaction and it took around 7 working days for the physical card to arrive in the post.

But while I was still on the phone, they sent the new one straight to my Barclays app and I was able to use it for contactless payments and online purchases immediately.

DisapprovingSpaniel · 03/06/2025 23:48

I had similar recently and Apple Pay was available for the new card almost immediately - long before the physical card got here.

Painrelief · 03/06/2025 23:51

Yep my Barclays card took about 7 days it used to take 2 days ! Ridiculous really .

TheTwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 03/06/2025 23:53

After I lost/cancelled my cards, the First Direct card came a day later and Barclays after a week. I don't know how FD could do it so much quicker but I was very grateful! I could use the banking apps instantly for both but needed to use Chip and Pin before I could use the cards in a shop so that wasn't much help.

I got both an email and a text message within minutes of asking for a replacement card, saying I could use the new, yet to be issued card in Apple Pay and online/ on phone immediately.

That is crazy.

My MIL's debit card wasn't stolen, but a new one only arrived two weeks before the previous one expired (from Lloyds). Anybody could be away on holiday or on business for two weeks, and so be without a card until they returned home.

No idea why banks are suddenly so possessive about bank cards and stopping customers from getting at their own money.

fivejndown · 04/06/2025 00:54

It wouldn't be a big deal for me, as I have multiple credit cards and accounts woth debit cards, and most essential spending comes out as direct debits - it's fairly normal for me to not use my debit card for weeks.

Bjorkdidit · 04/06/2025 06:24

This is one of the reasons why it's not a good idea to use one card/account for everything/most things. It's far too easy for your 'spending' debit card to be lost/stolen/hacked/bank problems and then it's an inconvenience until it's replaced.

Always make sure you have a minimum of 2, possibly three ways of payment. As a minimum, separate your DDs from your spending either with another account, or use a credit card that's paid off in full every month. Or do both of those things. That way, if you have a problem with one, you have a fall back, rather than being completely stuck if something goes wrong.

bluecurtains14 · 04/06/2025 06:25

Do you not have a credit card or other card? Why not?

Onelifeonly · 04/06/2025 06:28

I had to cancel mine recently for similar reasons - they sent a new one virtually to my banking app immediately. I could use it contactless, just couldn't pay by chip and pin for a while, which I generally don't anyway. Only needed to do that to exchange something in M & S so waited till it arrived - it was also only about 3 to 4 days later. Plus I have a credit card for back up.

dottiedodah · 04/06/2025 06:30

Left my Debi card in the bakers! New one 2 days later. Halifax. Good service 👍 if one can be pleased with their bank I am .

whirlyhead · 04/06/2025 06:52

I have a wise account that doesn’t issue a physical card unless you specifically ask for one, you just get a virtual one. That way it’s issued instantly which is quite sensible.

SpacedOutOut · 04/06/2025 06:54

I’m with Lloyds, have lost my card twice in maybe 5 years or so….new one been with me within 2 days. Both times they said to allow up to 7 days but I’ve never waited that long.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 04/06/2025 09:03

Not everybody wants, or qualifies for, a credit card. I don't see why you should be forced into it, just because a bank assumes that you'll have one and thus they can be half-hearted about whether or not they send you one in good time.

What if you did have a CC, that happened to expire or be lost/stolen at the same time as your debit card, and the CC provider was similarly lacklustre, assuming that 'oh, they can just use their debit card in the meantime instead'?

In the case of my MIL, like many elderly working class people, her alternative to her bank leaving it to the wire before her card expired was to go to the cash point over the last few days of validity and withdraw a lot of cash. Very unsafe and horribly, needlessly causing her stress. How would it actually matter to the bank to bother to send out new cards a month or two before the old one expires?

Elderly people and their personal circumstances need to be remembered and respected in modern society; not just grudgingly treated like an annoying afterthought. Most of us will (hopefully) be old one day - I wonder how we will feel if the younger generations then merrily toss us aside and consider our needs and areas of comfort obsolete?

Same for me
new card was available immediately in my banking app and therefore Apple Pay

teksquad · 04/06/2025 09:05

This has happened on our joint account a few times and whilst the new card has taken over a week to arrive, its always been available within a few hours of reporting and cancelling the card in our Google Pay.

Ace56 · 04/06/2025 09:07

I went through the same thing recently OP! Card and pin took about a week to arrive. I wasn’t able to use Apple Pay until I received my new card (this is with NatWest). I had to live off my credit card for a week! I also thought surely there’s a better system than this…

Endiof · 04/06/2025 09:21

I only use a credit card for general spending and online, I have 4, I also have 2 bank accounts, I wouldn't rely on just one bank account

CombatBarbie · 04/06/2025 09:55

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 03/06/2025 23:20

No, not on that account, because they have cancelled the card.

My card automatically updates on Google pay when I've had new cards issued.
