People who expect British food on a foreign holiday

Woman moans about no British food in a Corfu hotel https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/tourists-nightmare-corfu-hotel-had-35327009.amp

If you refuse to eat foreign food, or worried about having a flare up of a dietary issue (she has ulcerative colitis), you don’t go on a foreign holiday!

How many people who go abroad and never sample the local food, have never tried it? Even Spanish omelette is egg, potato and onion! A late relative even refused to eat this, even though he was happy to eat these ingredients in a salad - boiled eggs, new potatoes and spring onions

If there was guaranteed sunshine and heat in the UK millions of Brits wouldn't go abroad on holiday. They just want what they have here with heat. I don't think it is unreasonable to hope to have something somewhere (I've had plenty of maccas while abroad) but I wouldn't be moaning if I could only get local cuisine. Also, like the op said it isn't hard in many places to get cuisine very similar to UK food.

Sorry but disagree. Same could be said for any one of the millions of migrants that now reside in the UK. Restaurants that cater to their diet exist everywhere, so why does it not read across. The woman in the article is a moron, but your more general point isn't valid in my opinion. Some people will expect to be catered for abroad, and as a paying customer they've a right to it.

The onus is on the guest to check if the food will suit you or if there are restaurants nearby that would suit you.

You seem to be making a general
point rather than addressing that this woman wanted her specific catering habits catered to.

Does that mean any given restaurant in Corfu or Ljubljana or Riga or Mexico City should anticipate and provide for the dietary preferences of all the Swedish, Irish, German, Italian, Brazilian, French, Dutch, Argentinian, Anglo Canadian, Quebecois, Nigerian, Turkish, Greek, and Russian visitors, or did you just have the Brits in mind?

If you want British food on holiday, go to a tourist resorts catered to foreigners. If you book to go to Benidrom, it's obviously not unreasonable to expect your hotel to serve a fry up, because the hotel isn't aimed at Spaniards.

If you're visiting a non-tourist area, it's obviously unreasonable to expect to be served a Sunday Dinner. The exception to this can be major cities, where you can reasonably expect to find most styles of cuisine, in which case, feel free to go and hunt down that Sunday Dinner.

Migrants are not comparable- it's not unreasonable for a migrant to move somewhere (especially a city with a big migrant population for their country) and fancy a bit of home cooking. Plenty of migrants start restaurants. Places like London are very multicultural. But yes, it would still be unreasonable to move to a rural Yorkshire village with a low migrant population and expect world cuisine. In that case, better get restaurant planning.

Personally, I don't understand why you would want to go on holiday and eat the exact same things you would at home. I just can't fathom not wanting to try different foods, which is a significant part of a country's culture. I love eating different foods and I'm very thankful that UK cities have a lot of variety. You must lead a very boring existence imo to go on holiday and still want to eat bangers and mash.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/06/2025 22:44

There is no point in going abroad if you aren’t going to try the local food!

Livelovebehappy · 03/06/2025 22:44

Probably should go self catering. That way she could visit the many cafes and restaurants that do cater to the British diet. If it was so important, surely she would have researched it before booking.

rhomb · 03/06/2025 22:49

saltinesandcoffeecups · 03/06/2025 22:33

Maybe because there are bad reviews going back years but she somehow thought it would be better?

Many people book holidays because of it’s a bargain. They don’t research the hotel or the resort. Or read the information.

Heard people going to SM complaining that they got woken up by planes. Booked a hotel at a resort 20 min drive from airport. Then the other extreme, moaning about the 2.5 hour transfer. Turkey has places with that length of transfer.

It tells you on the hotel information page how long the transfer is.

Same with this thread. I Live in South east asia btw and cook 5 types of cuisine competently : Indian (southern regional), Chinese, Malay and Thai and the odd western dish. But I loathe food snobbery. If people want to eat nothing but beans on toast, leave them be.

Can I come and visit and have a classic nasi goreng, and some roti chanai please?!

Deebee90 · 03/06/2025 22:51

Hufflemuff · 03/06/2025 20:19

Are they? By who?

I have UC and I've never been told to avoid anything as everyone with the disease seems to have different triggers. Mushy crap (white pasta, white bread, chips) seems to always be fine with me; but when I'm in a flare the worst thing i could eat is raw vegetables! Spinach is the devil.

So please dont spread misinformation or insinuate that everyone with UC is their own worse enemy/has it coming and if they eat anything processed/red meat etc... because that's just not the reality.

Exactly. The amount of bullshit I’ve read on here about it is laughable. There’s no diet for anyone recommended. I’d be cured if they said don’t eat sausages or bacon 🤣. Clearly us with illnesses shouldn’t go away if we expect some home comforts while away.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/06/2025 22:52

@Ladamesansmerci oh you might be suprised- Benidorm is very popular with Spaniards- has some excellent tapas and pinchos bars in the old town too -

miraxxx · 03/06/2025 22:53

Kibble19 · 03/06/2025 22:29

Look at the face on her in that photo. Would turn milk. She’s a moron whose UC could definitely benefit from some foods that aren’t bacon-based.

Ah, so she looks stupid. Or ugly. That's all?

TheHateIsNotGood · 03/06/2025 22:53

The best chips I've ever had was in Albania. Before then I rarely ate chips.

No, she has UC, did you read the article?

Swapping her usual fried, greasy foods for something less processed might help, that’s what I’m saying.

Nonsense
Businesses can decide their offerings, and customers can decide where to spend their money based on those offerings. Period

Nobody has a right to British food when abroad. That’s ridiculous.

Unless you have UC or are a doctor then don’t make comments you have no knowledge about .

Will make whatever comments I want on a public forum, cheers. 😀

But in the interest of curiosity - what have I said that's incorrect?

Yeah the old town is lovely tbf (I went as a teen withy parents!), but it's still not unreasonable to expect a fry up in your hotel on the Levante side!

You can have anything you want. My nasi goreng is to die for.

A friend has requires gluten free diet. She went on a holiday tour to Malta where the tour group stayed in a hotel. It was half board. She explained to the tour company that she is GF. On arrival, she met with the restaurant manager and explained her dietary requirements.

Every breakfast, she was given two small cobs or slices of gf bread. Then in the evening meal, the head chef came up to her informing what foods are GF.

Plus on another tour holiday in Italy, a fellow tour member had a cheese allergy. Tour guide gave her phrases of like “I am allergic to cheese” etc to say and written down. She was most impressed with a restaurant which did vegan cheese as an alternative.

That’s great about the Italian translation one. I’m sure there was a story fairly recently about someone who died in a foreign country because their allergy details were lost in translation when they told the restaurant.

You are trying to back away from saying she looks stupid and/or ugly. I understand. I would too if I were caught being so shallow.

Rewis · 03/06/2025 23:05

I was reading reviews of a hotel in Spain. Several people complained that they didn't have BBC on the tv.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 03/06/2025 23:09

@miraxxx86% of us, all stupid!

Tadahhh · 03/06/2025 21:56

Ooh yes, had a great KFC in Windhoek once 😂

I have also eaten pretty much everything else on offer - love a chickens foot, or a snail, but I can understand how people struggle with food. Sad face in the papers, less so.

Edited

I live in a country where everyone chews happily on a chicken's foot but I cannot even bring myself to try.
