People who expect British food on a foreign holiday

Woman moans about no British food in a Corfu hotel https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/tourists-nightmare-corfu-hotel-had-35327009.amp

If you refuse to eat foreign food, or worried about having a flare up of a dietary issue (she has ulcerative colitis), you don’t go on a foreign holiday!

How many people who go abroad and never sample the local food, have never tried it? Even Spanish omelette is egg, potato and onion! A late relative even refused to eat this, even though he was happy to eat these ingredients in a salad - boiled eggs, new potatoes and spring onions

If you go to a Mediterranean AI resort then you have to expect a massive mix of different sort of food. We have been on these holidays several times. Most of the hotels cater for a wide range of nationalities from all over Europe. I do not believe there was not cereal, fruit, pastries and bread for breakfast. Often the sausages are more hotdog style than proper sausage but they aren't the only option.

She keeps saying she "couldn't" eat any of the food - no, she just didn't want to. And all the other moans about the distance from the beach are easily googled. She is clearly an idiot - even if she has been coached by the reporter to sound even more outrageous and entitled, she is the one who has gone to the press in the first place.

@RexsSoupCan

OMFG I am not interested in talking to different sorts of people and looking at different kinds of art when I am on my holidays. I am flipping knackered from work and want a week lying in the sun. This is not possible where I live as it pisses it down most of the time.

But why should people in foreign countries accommodate you going there and basically living as if you're in your own front room?

If people tipped up here and walked into restaurants and started moaning that they couldn't get what they wanted in their home countries they'd be torn to shreds and told to go home. Why is it OK for Brits to do it?

I don't expect everyone in all foreign countries to, but there are loads of hotels/resorts which do cater exactly for that. If I've checked it out online beforehand, and have been promised that experience, that's what I want to get. The hotel promising that to me will have to accommodate me, as that's what I've paid for!
The lady in the article clearly (wrongly) thought she had booked one of those, and her disappointment was that the specific hotel she was at, didn't provide what she had hoped it would.

frozendaisy · 05/06/2025 08:50

TUI have had a lucky escape!

Would be interesting to see the details before she booked.

There is no point in going abroad if you aren’t going to try the local food!

This is a ridiculous statement, unless all you do when you go abroad is eat. Maybe that explains why so many people are fat, using weight loss injections etc.

how is it ridiculous?
Food is one of the basics. If you can't bear the idea of looking at 'foreign" food, why go there in the first place.

Why, you don't eat for an entire week if you go away? 😂

Pretty sure it the fussy and precious people who actually get fat, anyone with a healthy relationship with food don't make so much drama.

Most AIs I have seen or had F&F visit, are more inland than the traditional hotels. They need the space for the half dozen swimming pools, slides etc.

Most AIs offer a shuttle bus service, usually 30-60 mins and that info in the reception area or in the lifts.

It’s ridiculous because to say there is no point going abroad without it, means that you think all the other things people do when they go abroad are pointless.

I go abroad for different weather, to see new things, to relax, to have adventures and new experiences with those I love and to visit family and friends amongst other things. They are all important things too, definitely not pointless.

Yatuway · 05/06/2025 11:18

I just think it's funny when people affect not to understand what anyone would get out of a holiday if they're not eating local food. It's ok, you won't be force fed chips at an Irish bar in Benidorm just because you admit you understand the concept of sunshine.

Of course I would eat, I would ask if it was possible to have the chicken or fish without the sauce for example. Funnily enough the same as I would do at home.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/06/2025 11:56

I thought one of the whole points of going abroad is to try the local food!

ginasevern · 05/06/2025 12:03

Has anyone actually read the Tripadvisor reviews for this hotel? The Lido Corfu Sun Hotel. There are far more bad reviews than good/average ones. The food is repeatedly criticised as being awful with undercooked meat, hot food always cold and exactly the same thing every day. People also say that trying to get to the "private beach" is hazardous. Guests have had lots of other issues with the hotel too. The Daily Fail have obviously twisted this woman's complaints to make the article more readable.

TheDogDecides · 05/06/2025 12:05

@Toddlerteaplease It’s one point of going abroad for some people. You said there was ‘no point’ in going abroad if you don’t try the local food, which was a stupid statement.

Oof yeah it looks quite a shocker doesn't it!

Crikeyalmighty · 05/06/2025 12:12

@Yatuway yep I do get what you are saying - personally picking nice meals out and choosing places to go is a big part of the holiday ‘for me’ - but I accept for others a big part may be drinking or swimming in nice blue warm sea or pedalos or whatever - doesn’t make it any less of a holiday and some people do see food as fuel and just aren’t foodies. In this case I think the lady just did no research . If diet matters and being fussy about brands , close to beach and no steps and a flat prom to walk on etc then Corfu probably isn’t the best choice , nor is AI. She would indeed probably get more out of Benidorm or Benalmedena (or playa Blanca in lanzarote or Puerto pollensa in Majorca even ) if she wanted a bit more upmarket . Lots of resorts that could fit the bill. I love Greece and the Greek Isles but wouldn’t pick it for someone with her particular needs/wants.

Crikeyalmighty · 05/06/2025 12:14

@Yatuway yep -and those trip advisor reviews are publicly available - maybe time to update herself with Trip advisor - my father in law is 85 - he always reads them - as do I

Yatuway · 05/06/2025 12:16

Well it looks like this particular individual might be a grifter, as apparently she makes a habit of this. So who knows, maybe she did do her research!

Who says she a grifter? As far as I'm aware the owner of the hotel (which has got fucking awful reviews by the way) is the only one who's said so. I doubt that "lots of other hotels" have contacted him to complain about this woman. What, like lots of other hotels from all over the world? Besides, all of her complaints are borne out by the numerous other terrible reviews on Tripadvisor. Are most of the other guests dating back several years grifters then?

MaturingCheeseball · 05/06/2025 12:25

Dh was on the board of a company with a man who was chairman of a famous holiday firm. He made a habit of anonymously going on the holidays.

On one he was accosted by members of the group asking him to sign a petition: the food, diarrhoea, bad service etc etc etc. He said he hadn’t experienced these and the CFs said neither had they, but they always complained in order to get compensation.

To be clear, it was the bit about her having done this in other cases rather than the criticisms of the hotel, especially as we don't have enough info on what they told her they'd provide, any contact she may have had with them beforehand etc. I mentioned upthread the reviews look shocking and can see you liked that post of mine.

But it's true, he's hardly an impartial observer.

I cannot find her review on TA. From memory, if you click on the username, you get to their profile page and from there, see their other reviews.

I always ignore anyone who posts 1 or 2 stars every single review. As what makes them actually happy, enjoy themselves etc? They are probably sad, miserable and boring.

I actually feel sorry for this woman. She is clearly not the sharpest tool in the box, but I can imagine some journalist has strung her along, validating her particular complaint and talking sympathetically to her, only to present her to the entire country as Britains most ignorant woman. It’s like the awful singers on the X factor. Someone should have quietly pointed out her that she will make herself look very stupid going public. But they didn’t. They made full use of her ignorance for entertainment.

Nah, she must have read plenty of "compo sad face" stories, else why did she contact the paper? So either she doesn't think that people in these stories look like idiots (or are made to look like idiots by the journalists), or she knew how she would come across in the story but didn't mind if it got her a payout from the travel agent 🤷‍♀️

We've just got back from a lovely week at a great hotel in Sicily. Buffet breakfasts were the "international" type with scrambled eggs, bacon , sausages, tomatoes, even hash browns. Ok but not special.
However you could also have very good eggs Benedict (or Eggs Alaska, with smoked salmon) cooked to order, which I stuck to. Plus fruit and pastries. Well, I was on holiday.
