Nothing wrong with buying coffees regularly

RunnerAddict · 02/06/2025 21:47

I like to buy a coffee out and about 3/4 times a week - my friends say it’s a waste of money but it’s a small pleasure for me and I enjoy it!

Does anyone else do this or is everyone on the it’s a waste of money train?!

OP posts:
ThatBusyPanda · 02/06/2025 21:48

It’s obviously up to you what you spend your money on but for me, I’d spend £500 a year on something else!

Me too

BlueMum16 · 02/06/2025 21:50

I happily spend on a Costa coffee the couple of days I'm in the office.

I save on other things people might prioritise instead.

Jabberwok · 02/06/2025 21:50

We had a decent staff canteen and most of the team bought a coffee every day. Great start to the morning. You could be wasting cash on so many other things gambling, drink.drugs...so stuff what they say. If you can afford it crack on.

XenoBitch · 02/06/2025 21:51

Your friend is BU. It is up to you how you spend your money.
I hate instant coffee, but I do like a nice oat milk latte... so I spend money on that when I am out and want one.

Money enjoyed is never wasted.

VirginiaCottage · 02/06/2025 21:52

Your money, spend it on what gives you joy. Life is too short.

Some people spend thousands on for example
Disney holidays or beauty treatments - neither of which appeal to me in the slightest so I could in theory view that as a waste of money, but each to their own and all that.

As you were, OP. Enjoy the coffee.

Mum2jenny · 02/06/2025 21:52

It is a waste of money as far as I’m concerned. At around £4 for a coffee, say 3 times a week, that’s £12 a week or around £600 a year.
There are better things you can spend money on for that amount of money.
A jar of good coffee is under £10 and will probably last over a month.
But it does depend on how much spare money you have to waste on this luxury!

Lmnop22 · 02/06/2025 21:53

I’m the same with coffees. I enjoy them, I can afford them so I buy them.

I don’t judge people for not wanting to spend £4 on a cup of hot bean water but expect no judgment in return when I do!

Subbyhubby · 02/06/2025 21:53

I spend a lot on coffee. I find coffees are a great first date. It’s long enough to get to know if you’ll click with someone but not too long that you’ll be stuck. You can happily drive after a coffee and your judgement isn’t impaired.
If you get on you can always go somewhere else like a bar.
also it’s not so expensive that it’s easy to pay for your own without causing inconvenience to the other

Dramatic · 02/06/2025 21:54

Same, I love a caramel latte from Greggs. Some people drink alcohol every weekend which isn't cheap, I don't drink or smoke/vape. I don't get my nails or hair done so I'll spend my money on my Greggs coffee all I want 😁

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/06/2025 21:55

When it was £3.50 fine but Starbucks is now £5.50 for a caramel macchiato so I go without- not spending that much. It’s all relative, if you have to question buying yourself clothes or going out or clearing debt then yes it’s wasteful.

you can’t say “there are better things to spend your money on”!! It’s subjective. Who is to judge what the OP should spend her money on - you?

HaddyAbrams · 02/06/2025 21:58

Is it a waste of money as in, could you make it cheaper at home? Probably.

Is it a waste of money if you enjoy it? Probably not.

As long as you aren't buying coffee instead of paying bills, or aren't always moaning to the friend that you're skint then it's none of her business.

StripyHorse · 02/06/2025 21:58

YANBU. I rarely buy coffees when I am out (unless I am on holiday) but I have a home barista machine and splash out on nice coffee. I will be spending less than you do, but certainly more than most people spend on coffee.

fruitbrewhaha · 02/06/2025 21:59

Of course it’s fine. I don’t buy coffee out of it I do buy very nice coffee beans and have a good coffee pot and make it myself. I also really like cheese so buy expensive cheese from a deli. I don’t drink much these days but when I do, it’s expensive stuff because it’s nice. Buy what you like.

It was totally ridiculous how much Caramel Macchiato went up. If you have a gold status you can order latte with vanilla syrup and caramel drizzle, the same ingredients as caramel Mac but with extras free it makes it £3.75 for a tall one anyway.

OP I get a coffee a day out because I like it. I'm not bothered what anyone else thinks.

WitchSharkadder · 02/06/2025 22:02

YANBU. I buy a coffee 5 days a week. It’s my small luxury and I genuinely really enjoy it. Completely get that, for some, it’s a waste of money. But then I think getting your nails done, having a facial, buying a designer bag etc is a waste of money. Shock horror, everyone has different ways of relaxing, treating themselves.

My money that I work my arse off to earn so I’ll spend it on what I want and makes me happy.

£2.95 from Greggs 😉

Brightasarainbow · 02/06/2025 22:02

My DH buys coffee almost daily. I've always encouraged it when he worries about budget, as he's very frugal otherwise and deserves his one indulgence.

You do you, OP.

Sherararara · 02/06/2025 22:03

Entirely up to you. I love my caramel lattes. I can afford it so couldn’t give a shit what other people think.

Do you never buy yourself anything? Never get your nails done, hair done, buy a bottle of wine or anything for a treat?

Why is a good cup of coffee when you’re out ever a waste of money? A £10 jar of coffee will be poor quality and a waste of money.

Hayley1256 · 02/06/2025 22:07

Your money, your choice! I spend way to much on them but I enjoy them and have the disposable income to do so

vincettenoir · 02/06/2025 22:07

What’s important is how you feel about it. I am in the habit of spending more on coffees than I would like to. I plan to cut down a bit.

steff13 · 02/06/2025 22:08

Part of the reason I work it to buy things I want. If that's what makes you happy, go for it.
