Nothing wrong with buying coffees regularly

I like to buy a coffee out and about 3/4 times a week - my friends say it’s a waste of money but it’s a small pleasure for me and I enjoy it!

Does anyone else do this or is everyone on the it’s a waste of money train?!

I go for coffee every morning. I don’t feel like it’s a waste of money to use my money for something i enjoy.

Snorlaxo · 02/06/2025 22:09

If you have the money then why not?

I personally stopped buying coffees once they started costing more than £4 ish. I don’t know why but that number put me off massively. Bought a coffee machine and enjoy coffees that I made instead.

Denimrules · 02/06/2025 22:10

This is something I miss doing. My parents - who passed away in their 90s - used to go for coffee at least twice a week. DC and I would meet them in the hols at the coffee shop and then back to lunch with them. I was meeting my Dad once a week for coffee and shopping when he was 94. Getting out of the house was really good for them. Part of keeping fit and independent.

These days I don't often go out for coffee. Since covid our staff canteen has had free teabags, instant coffee and milk. Work has a public facing coffee shop, but I rarely go there as the other stuff is free.

There are much worse things you could spend money on. Scrolling EBay in tea breaks or smoking/vaping etc etc

rivalsbinge · 02/06/2025 22:10

I love a good sit down coffee, in a cup with my laptop. Once a week maybe I take myself to my favourite coffee shop and spend a hour savouring the fresh tasty coffee, and cake, but I don’t get the same pleasure sipping from cardboard cups or metal flasks, so I’m not a take out person. But do what you enjoy!!

grizzlyoldbear · 02/06/2025 22:12

I really enjoy it too. Someone told me the other day I was wasting my money, apparently I should just take a flask. But honestly, it never tastes the same. It's lukewarm within the hour and has that weird flask flavour.
I don't do botox, don’t get my nails done, and barely buy clothes, so if my one indulgence is a decent coffee, I'm peaceful with that. I like the smell of coffee shops and the vibes.

NattyTurtle59 · 02/06/2025 22:12

Spend your money on whatever you like. I expect the virtuous "oh what a waste of money" types spend their money on things the rest of us don't. Your money, your choice. I'm in NZ and lots of people here buy coffee daily - and there is no such thing as a "jar of good coffee".

wfhwfh · 02/06/2025 22:13

I’m the same as you, OP. I permanently work from home and a short walk to the local coffee shop for a takeaway coffee is a small moment of joy in my day.

Yes, it’s indulgent but I totted up the money I’d save by cutting it out and I think it’s worth it to me. It’s not having any impact on my finances and I’m thrifty in other ways.

Obviously if the purse strings needed tightened, it would be the first thing to go. But what else would I do for circa £500 per year that would give me the same joy quota?

SummertimeFeelingFine · 02/06/2025 22:13

I haven't had a coffee out in 5+ years. I use my money on other things that make me happy.

Your money, your choice.

fruitbrewhaha · 02/06/2025 21:59

Of course it’s fine. I don’t buy coffee out of it I do buy very nice coffee beans and have a good coffee pot and make it myself. I also really like cheese so buy expensive cheese from a deli. I don’t drink much these days but when I do, it’s expensive stuff because it’s nice. Buy what you like.

Which coffee beans for example? Thanks! 🤩

This is a hill I will die on. I bloody love takeaway coffee.

When I was a teacher I bought it daily. Got up at 5 and got home after 6 each day. Taught feral children with regular physical assaults. It was a nice treat.

As a new mum probably bought multiple a day because meeting friends over coffee was a thing. It was the only thing really.

I still do it after a bad morning with my toddler or if I’m really tired and you know what it TOTALLY cheers me up.

Tangled123 · 02/06/2025 22:16

I get a Costa latte once a week or so. I feel like I can justify that as a treat for working hard all week but it’s too expensive for me to want to go more than that.

Edited

Arg, a flask is miserable.
I want a nice coffee.. I want someone else to make it, I want someone else to clean up after. I want to be in a nice chilled place to enjoy it in.

It is all so much more than just the coffee.

TheChosenTwo · 02/06/2025 22:17

Meh. I happily drop £500/600 on a pretty dress - totally depends on your priorities and finances. If you were skint and struggling to pay your bills it might be a bit frivolous (but if that was your only treat in life then one a week might be imperative to your mood) but presuming you can afford it who cares if other people wouldn’t buy coffees? I don’t drink coffee or any hot drink or soft drinks other than water so I wouldn’t bother with coffee but
I buy myself lunch every day I’m in the office. Mostly people bring their own in but I enjoy the walk to the nice deli or to M&S - I don’t see it as a waste of money, I see it as in investment in getting me away from my desk!

ThinWomansBrain · 02/06/2025 22:18

I can't bear coffee with milk - so its a fairly cheap black Americano or expresso
Sometimes I get really faffy and get an expresso with hot water on the side.

But weird of your friend to criticise - would she be the same if you smoked/vaped or had the occasional glass of wine when out?

JudithOnHolidayAgain · 02/06/2025 22:19

It's up to you how you spend your money, as long as you can afford it enjoy your coffee........
I hardly ever buy coffee as I prefer
to spend on other things, but a colleague drives me nuts as she is always buying coffee while moaning she can't afford a weekend away like I just had..........so buy less coffee!!!!!!

quixote12 · 02/06/2025 22:20

Nope I'm with you! Coffee is a joy and the pleasure of having it in a coffee shop. Enjoy

IwasDueANameChange · 02/06/2025 22:21

Depends what the alternative is.

My office has a bean to cup machine. Its easy to use & there are good caff & decaf beans provided free, plus fresh dairy, oat & almond milk in the fridge & a frother.

Yet loads of people will go out & pay £3.80 for a coffee at the cafe 3 or 4 minutes walk away, 3 times a day. I find this quite surprising.

However if there was no machine & no fridge the alternative was a grim teaspoon of gold blend in a mug with milk pods or coffee mate, yes I'd be going to buy a coffee too.

cheesycheesy · 02/06/2025 22:21

I love a coffee when I’m out. Instant even if it’s the more expensive stuff is horrible in comparison

IwasDueANameChange · 02/06/2025 22:22

What i find weird is people who pop from their own home, a lot, to buy takeaway coffees, but never simply just buy a decent machine. I don't mean a shit pod machine, i mean a normal decent bean to cup.

ShesTheAlbatross · 02/06/2025 22:23

It would be a waste of my money. But there will almost certainly be things I buy that you would consider a waste of your money. And the same probably applies to your friends who think coffee is a waste of money - they’ll buy things (either small regular things, or larger splurges) that you’ll probably think are a waste of money.

christmascrazylady · 02/06/2025 22:23

I don’t drink or smoke but my one endulgents is taking myself to a lovely cafe and sitting by myself with an ice latte and pastry before work

Moonlightdust · 02/06/2025 22:23

I don’t smoke or drink so I can’t see why I can’t enjoy my indulgence of barista coffees a few times a week. Life is too short to deny yourself little luxuries!

Mary46 · 02/06/2025 22:24

I enjoy it too op. The girls know me in the cafes. Yes I could drink at home not the same! I def buy a few a week. I dont go out much so thats my only treat. Sometimes I get it and have it in the car

XenoBitch · 02/06/2025 22:24

I don't have the initial outlay to splash out on a coffee machine at home.
I like that I don't have to make it, clean up after, and I like to be out and not at home.

Mum2jenny · 02/06/2025 21:52

It is a waste of money as far as I’m concerned. At around £4 for a coffee, say 3 times a week, that’s £12 a week or around £600 a year.
There are better things you can spend money on for that amount of money.
A jar of good coffee is under £10 and will probably last over a month.
But it does depend on how much spare money you have to waste on this luxury!

Instant coffee from a jar is horrible. I don't get my nails or lashes done, don't wear make up, I buy second hand clothes, etc. I enjoy a really nice coffee a few times a week, not a waste of money for me.
