Cyclist gesticulating wildly at me

On the school run this morning which involves driving down a narrow winding lane which is always very busy at school run time. The lane is wide enough for two cars but it’s tight. There are three schools on this route and at school drop off and pick ups times it’s busy and congested. It’s 30mph. This morning I was driving along at about 25mph and a man dressed in serious looking cycling gear was cycling. I overtook him with quite a bit of space, definitely more than the 1.5m minimum, and as I was overtaking I could see a car coming towards me so nipped in in front of him- again definitely more than 1.5m from him. My windows were closed but I could then hear him shouting wildly “what the F was that!!” Over and over again and gesticulating. I didn’t indicate. I’m worried he will report me he was going wild, I genuinely thought I was driving quite considerately until I saw his reaction!

I’m now second guessing how close I was to him when I pulled in in front of him, and thinking he will report me and upload footage. If so how likely is it I will hear about it or be prosecuted?

Yeah sums you up!

Much easier to be laid back than behave like a dog with a bone. This is clearly a wind up thread anyway and you've taken the bait.

Chiseltip · 02/06/2025 15:08

Cyclists are so bloody selfish, they choose to play their little hobby on a public road, creating a nuisance and inconveniencing others, then they get all upset when someone overtakes them, behaving in a threatening and abusive manner. We need to start reporting Cyclists for their behaviour.

I don't know of any other hobby that’s played on public roads.

Don't worry OP, I doubt the little man child you passed will report anything.

Cycling should be banned on public roads.

Blackdow · 02/06/2025 14:03

Because cyclists don’t tend to be response for killing car drivers. Not saying they’ve never caused accidents, they have, but much less likely to kill someone. People driving like the OP kill or injure cyclists every day.

Pedestrians don't tend to be responsible for killing train passengers either, but they're still banned from walking along train tracks.

That's rather extreme.

Cycling can be for commuting, general travel etc. It's not a hobby

Maybe you should try it. Get an appreciation for the dangers they face from bad drivers

Chiseltip · 02/06/2025 15:16

rosemarble · 02/06/2025 14:05

Of course there are bad cyclists, but cyclists are much more vulnerable so a small mistake by a car driver may have a much larger impact on the cyclists (injury), than the car driver (scratched paintwork, sharp stop).
So more cyclists have taken it upon themselves to bring bad car drivers to account.
It's also much harder to track a cyclist down (from a dashcam) so car drivers are a bit stuck if they want to report or prosecute.

I am a cyclist and a car driver. I am in utter despair at times with the recklessness of some cyclists in Cambridge. No lights, no high viz, veering all over the place.

Why should car drivers have to worry about cyclists, if cyclists had half a brain they wouldn't play their hobby on public roads.

90% of cyclists are lycra clad middle aged men pretending that they're in the Tour De France.

Almost nobody commutes by bike, and the guy in the OP's post wasn't commuting, he was just playing his little hobby.

faerietales · 02/06/2025 15:19

DH was once knocked off his bike by someone “nipping in” after overtaking him in the wrong place - luckily he wasn’t badly injured but it really shook his confidence - the driver didn’t even stop.

Hopefully you’ve learnt a lesson from this and give other cyclists more space next time 😬

You're making up stats and demonstrating a clearly irrational anger. Are you OK?

Why was your DH on a bike next to traffic?

We don't let children play on roads because roads are not playgrounds. If your DH had been driving he wouldn't have caused an accident.

I'm not making up stats, the vast majority of cyclists are just playing a hobby.

What's your source for that 90% figure then?

wombat1a · 02/06/2025 15:26

Cyclist and driver here, 95% of close (scary) calls with cars are not from the actual overtake but from the car cutting back in front of me. It seems that car drivers can not understand that I am moving (and moving at probably 2/3's of their speed) and completely underestimate how long it takes for them to perform a safe overtake before coming back to the 'right' side of the road again.

I bet this is what happened OP and I hope he has a camera and I hope you get a fine and points cos it happens far far too often and it is really terrifying sometimes.

Can I just make sure I understand your point? All cyclists are dangerous, so they all deserve to be killed? Mandatory death sentences for anyone cycling in public? Gonna be honest, that sounds a bit extreme...

Of course not!
Sorry English is not my first language.
I was commenting that cyclists seem to express their annoyance at others (drivers, pedestrians) in a way that would make us think that they are themselves very respectful of the rules. Which is not the case.
I would even say that the only group (drivers/cyclists/pedestrians) I see disobeying the rules every single time I’m outside are the cyclists.

My point is that they seem to systematically and vocally complain about drivers and it seems that they just want make a point. Because of they were genuine about road safety, why would they themselves put others at risk so often?

What? Am I completely misunderstanding your point or do you not understand that cyclists and cars share the road?

Can you give some examples of how cyclists put people at risk?

MyLimeGuide · 02/06/2025 16:15

Just another wee point to raise on the anger thing, I really dont like the idea of a woman on her own with children being shouted at and aggressively sworn at.

Oh give over. Then maybe the woman on her own with children shouldn’t have put them in danger whilst almost taking out a cyclist.

The OP thought she was driving safely. She thought that she had given plenty space when nipping back in. It’s his reaction that has educated her. She needed to see how dangerous it was, and how much is scared the cyclist. Otherwise, she would still be thinking that it is safe to pull in front of a cyclist as king as you’re 1.5 meters ahead of them. There absolutely needed to be a reaction for the OP to learn here.

Yes, I can understand your shock at seeing a trait you're unfamiliar with. You're definitely a cyclist.
