“Last night of freedom”

Gentles · 01/06/2025 22:24

I am organising my best friend’s hen and used a very generic term attempting to be personable to a group of girls (some of whom I don’t know). “Looking forward to celebrating Jen’s last night of freedom with you all…let’s make it a good un”.

Apparently I’ve raised the eyebrows of the mother of the groom and my friend’s future in laws with my comment.

It’s a totally harmless saying. Right? No one normal would take it seriously. The brides own mum and aunts were in the group chat!

The person who who told me said the mother of the groom’s mum found it very inappropriate!

I'm oscillating between self doubt and “they’re drama queens”.

😳

I clearly was not being serious

I wouldn't worry about some raised eyebrows. Have a good time.

I wouldn’t care in the slightest. Last night of freedom is just a saying (imo). This is a very non wild bunch of girls

It’s a well known saying, people just like to get offended…

JonJonBan · 01/06/2025 22:33

Yeah it’s a perfectly normal thing to say. It’s clearly a joke that people have made for years regarding hen/stag/weddings etc. I’d find it weird that anyone was offended.

sheknowsitstoolate · 01/06/2025 22:34

Hope you have a good night. I know loads of people say it, I think it’s cringy but I wouldn’t be offended.

Then I suggest you take a long hard look in the mirror at yourself and your behaviour, maybe get yourself signed up to some self-awareness courses as you're lacking it by the bucket

minnienono · 01/06/2025 22:35

It’s in pretty poor taste but then I think hen and stag dos are generally (nothing wrong with going out with friends but they are out of control, behaviour and cost!)

Moll2020 · 01/06/2025 22:36

Drama queens - some people enjoy taking offence.

LetGoLetThem1234 · 01/06/2025 22:37

Honestly it seems like they're looking for something to be offended about. YANBU Give the complainers a wide berth during the hen night festivities.

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 01/06/2025 22:37

They are crazy! Start having a think about what you can say to wind them up at the hen do. Maybe start with referring to the groom as "the ol' ball and chain" and go from there?

Are you quite alright?

I didn’t even bother to engage with that poster as they don’t seem right in the head tbh

No wonder future MIL and Family IL have reservations about you.

AuntMarch · 01/06/2025 22:41

Ignore the viper. Not sure the name is apt when they're trying to get other people to bite!

It is a very common phrase to use for a hen/stag do. If it actually meant she was going to go shagging about town one last time, you'd certainly not have told her in laws anyway!

Gentles · 01/06/2025 22:41

If you knew this group, you’d know how very unliteral my words were. I told my bf I expect to be home by midnight (and that includes the train journey home!)

You are obviously living in the land of self absorbency. Some of you have no awareness of how your behaviour has the capacity to affect others. Sheesh!

sheknowsitstoolate · 01/06/2025 22:43

I think the MIL might have found this thread

Iceandfire92 · 01/06/2025 22:44

I think it's bloody weird that the bride has invited her in laws on her hen! Why would she want an old dragon like that with no sense of humour breathing down her neck while she's having fun with her friends?! I think you should add fuel to the fire and announce to the group that you've booked some strippers.

The bride’s gran is going on the hen, I suspect not 😂

The bride has never had a one night stand. Everyone knows she’s very tame

She should tell her she's booked a poll dancing class.

Yes, I'm sure this will do wonders for her relations with her best friend's in laws. 🙄
