“Last night of freedom”

Gentles · 01/06/2025 22:24

I am organising my best friend’s hen and used a very generic term attempting to be personable to a group of girls (some of whom I don’t know). “Looking forward to celebrating Jen’s last night of freedom with you all…let’s make it a good un”.

Apparently I’ve raised the eyebrows of the mother of the groom and my friend’s future in laws with my comment.

It’s a totally harmless saying. Right? No one normal would take it seriously. The brides own mum and aunts were in the group chat!

The person who who told me said the mother of the groom’s mum found it very inappropriate!

I'm oscillating between self doubt and “they’re drama queens”.

😳

Can’t wait to see future MIL’s face when the stripper arrives

ShesTheAlbatross · 01/06/2025 22:47

I wouldn’t be offended. But assuming you don’t know the mother of the groom (maybe you do?) then a joke about how your friend is losing her freedom by marrying her son is maybe a little risky when you don’t know how easily offended a person is. But I do think they’re being silly to make a thing of it - even if it offended them, it’s surely worth no more than an eye roll and a tut!

Then I suggest you take a long hard look in the mirror at yourself and your behaviour, maybe get yourself signed up to some self-awareness courses as you're lacking it by the bucket

Hahah this is completely ridiculous. It’s a saying - it has been said for years on stag and hen do’s, there is nothing in it. You sound like you need to lighten up Viper.

Christ!! Enjoy the hen won't you?!! They sound like a bunch of party poopers

I think MumsNet is known for its participants' lack of self awareness!

I think MumsNet is known for its participants' lack of self awareness!

And for its trolls, sadly.

OP, it's just a throwaway phrase, they're being dramatic and whoever told you about the 'eyebrow raising' was stirring the pot.

Catinthereallysmallhat · 01/06/2025 23:11

The oldies will be offended by anything these days 👀But I highly doubt they’ll be offended by naked strippers on stags do. Ignore them. They’ll be in bed by 8pm with their Horlicks.

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 01/06/2025 23:13

I don't envy your friend her new in-laws. Tell her it's not too late to reconsider.

Catinthereallysmallhat · 01/06/2025 23:13

TheNaiceGreenViper · 01/06/2025 22:40

No wonder future MIL and Family IL have reservations about you.

For saying “last night if freedom” what is wrong with that, really?

Catinthereallysmallhat · 01/06/2025 23:16

What’s with all the deleted posts? What on earth was said? 😂 why are people kicking off over “last night of freedom” I honestly don’t get the offence.

Daisy12Maisie · 01/06/2025 23:18

Saying last night of freedom when you are going on a night out with the bride to be’s future in laws and her nan is clearly a joke.

It would only not be funny if there was a history of cheating in the relationship or some sort of actual concern.

In person things come across better than written down so hopefully all fine on the actual hen do

CarpetKnees · 01/06/2025 23:20

Fascinated by all the deletions on what doesn't seem like a controversial thread at all Confused

Of course YANBU.
It is a well known phrase which no sane person is going to read anything in to. A bit like the groom starting his speech "My wife and I....". It's just a thing said about stag or hen dos.

I am 'mother of the bride/groom' age, not bride / bridesmaid age, for context.

Some people must be exhausted, the effort they put in to looking for offence.

Hypocrisy at it's finest.

Renabrook · 01/06/2025 23:44

Well considering the man hate on here it could be taken a number of ways

Gentles · 01/06/2025 23:45

I used it very much as a throwaway comment.

The weird reaction did make me think about the saying itself and I guess it is a bit weird when you actually think about it. I was just trying to be light and engaging with the message. No more, no less

OP posts:
INeedAnotherName · 02/06/2025 00:16

It's just a harmless saying OP, you were fine to use it.

What is more unusual is having any of the groom's family going on the hen as it's supposed to be the bride's friends and similar in age family. Well, it used to be.

LittleMonks11 · 02/06/2025 08:03

MIL needs to calm down. You were just making a joke, anyone with any sense would see that. Maybe MIL is upset about losing her wee boy.

The deletions are because Viper is a troll. Trolling other posts trying to get fights going. Pathetic.
