Bearing in mind how 'lucky' it is to get a council tenancy I'd not be complaining about the wallpaper. You will get savaged in AIBU.

Pinktomatoredlettuce · 01/06/2025 13:23

Complain all you want @TheOpalFox i understand!

When we got our council house it was absolutely horrific. Disgusting. Took months to sort out and I actually didn’t move in for 4 months till we had it totally redecorated I just stayed with my dad as it wasn’t actually safe for my dc ! I hope you manage to get it all looking nice and congrats on your new home

Tiredofwhataboutery · 01/06/2025 13:26

Be warned all that wallpaper may be holding back a lovely nicotine smell. We had that and it was vile.

TheOpalFox · 01/06/2025 13:41

Be warned... those layers may be holding the plaster on and the bricks up!!!

7 is insane i moaned at 3 when we moved in. Get the wine open it's the only way. What did you have for lunch it looks nice

Nannyfannybanny · 01/06/2025 13:57

You're lucky you're allowed to decorate straight away, round our way,you have a temporary tenancy agreement for the first 12 months, and are not allowed to do anything like this. Where we live now, started off with an electric stripper it took the plaster off! I started on our bedroom, there was a layer of vinyl wallpaper painted over, got that off by scoring, soaking stripping, only to find another layer of vinyl paper also painted over. I spent 6/8 hours a day doing this with the radio going in the hall. Ended up with Tenosynovitis,in agony and wearing hand/wrist splints .

mumda · 01/06/2025 13:58

Bathroom paint as a top layer really goes funny when you steam it. And there were three layers under that.
Nicotine soaked paper is vile. I could see where they'd had photos hung by the outlines.

RightOnTheEdge · 01/06/2025 13:59

Congratulations on your new home!
Moan away and post an after photo of all your hard work.

What is that you're eating? It looks interesting!

We were give £250 decorating vouchers when we first moved in ten years ago despite bring on a 12 month starter contract it was in a right state though.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 01/06/2025 14:12

Reading with interest. Last week I got the keys for a council flat that will need a lot of decorating - and the council inspectors have just found asbestos in the old floor tiles, so I can't begin work until they've declared it safe.

Penthrowingsurvivor · 01/06/2025 14:24

in a rental it makes sense, council or not. Being temporary, most people reasonably just put a quick layer of their own choosing, they don't want to spend money or too much effort when it's not theirs and they won't be there for that long.

Most people stay in council properties for years .

Namechangetry · 01/06/2025 15:00

When I moved into my council house it had a hole in the kitchen ceiling, the toilet leaked, the boiler was condemned, the gas meter had 2 leaks and the back door was insecure. Oh and it snowed the weekend I moved in, no heat or hot water because the gas was turned off, and it was 7 degrees indoors.

Oh, and most of the house was painted lime green or forest green, which took 4 layers of paint to cover, and some of the ceilings were wallpapered. Fun times.

Ceilings wall paperd?
Just why?

lazyarse123 · 01/06/2025 16:26

We moved from a council flat to a council house 32 years ago. The decorating wasn't too bad but oh my God the hall was absolutely rank and stank, they'd had dogs and kids and I think they used the area as a toilet for all of them. It was so bad the housing manager gave us £120 for cleaning products. We had a few repairs done and I kept apologising to the workmen about the smell and they all said not to worry as they'd been in there before.
How terrible do you have to be to live like that?
Forgot we had textured paper ceilings because council properties were not known for perfect plastering.

TheNightSurgeon · 01/06/2025 16:31

My walls were so bad when I moved in that I've had to plasterboard everywhere, there was no salvaging the walls. The council racked up 120 decorating hours in my house before I moved in because it was such a state, but all they had done was stick that horrendous anaglypta wallpaper over everything.

10 years on every room has been done and is looking amazing now.

Sometimes it takes a while, but you'll get there op.

I'm guessing to cover up the cracks but yes papering a ceiling must be an unfun job!

they might do, but it's still a rental. You can't blame people for just adding a coat of paint, or wallpaper, on a property that is not theirs.

gamerchick · 01/06/2025 18:58

At least it's not woodchip. Grin

Just keep chipping, but I'd be wondering the state of the walls underneath it all. Don't hesitate to get them in if chunks of wall come off.

Why won’t they be there that long? I think you’re getting confused with some sort of temporary accommodation.

It is theirs. Tenancies are for life.

Well no but many people can live in them for years whole life time, s even so might want ti decorate nicely
Yheu will also have to provide flooring etc.
