To ask what is a Wine Body?

SnowMoss · 31/05/2025 15:13

After a discussion with some family & friends at a recent gathering, a couple of them insist that they can spot a regular wine drinker from their face and body alone, that it has a typical 'look'. I presume they refer to female friends and colleagues here.

I am not a wine drinker, but sometimes enjoy a bit of G&T at the weekend. I have not personally noticed this myself, although the only wine drinkers I know are my sister and a male friend.

Is this another case of women putting each other down, or is there something I am missing?

Slightly red face, big belly? I don’t think it’s a gender thing.

randomchap · 31/05/2025 15:16

Sounds like judgemental women dragging others down

Some people are just horrible

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 31/05/2025 15:17

Heavy drinkers have a common appearance, pot bellied yet under-nourished. I don't know that there is a look specific to wine drinkers though or those who drink wine regularly vs those with a dependency.

TheBig50 · 31/05/2025 15:18

I'm not sure about body, but my face would come out in a rash on certain white wines.

SnowMoss · 31/05/2025 15:19

I actually didn't drink last weekend and expected to wake up Monday with lovely skin and whatnot but looked worse than usual, Grin

Yes, probably a put down from them. I don't know them very well so can't judge though..

One said they can spot other wine drinkers out and about in the city, that it sticks out a mile.

To be honest after a bit too much I do sometimes get a puffy face and red nose. Thankfully this is rare!

Why do you assume they are talking about women ?
The person who springs to my mind is Sir Alex Ferguson. Very red nose, and a few other men. I can't think of any women, but obviously those in the public eye can just cover it up with make up.

alcoholnightmare · 31/05/2025 15:41

I’m a heavy wine drinker - huge stomach bigger than my boobs, yellow/bloodshot eyes, I ALWAYS look tired, spotty skin and red around my nose

im gorgeous! 🤣

He's got rosacea. It's not a drinking thing in his case

ComtesseDeSpair · 31/05/2025 15:50

Drinking a lot of alcohol does cause water retention, so heavy drinkers do often have facial puffiness and bloating - but plenty of other things also cause water retention and bloating, from poor diet to food intolerances to medication to medical conditions. When I do Dry January my cheekbones and muscles do become more defined, but I get exactly the same effect when I do a keto diet but still drink, because the body stops retaining as much water without glycogen stores.

The relative who says they can “spot other wine drinkers out and about in the city” is being daft: they have no way of verifying whether these random strangers are drinkers or not, so how on earth do they confirm either way?

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 31/05/2025 15:52

I think I could spot a male wine body, which would be James Martin, the chef (hot BTW!)

For a woman, i picture a slim brunette with long hair who reads a lot and wears neutral make up but has had subtle work done

This is why I hate that particular assumption. I have rosacea.

Jamjams · 31/05/2025 16:00

Skinny legs and big belly for women? I see a lot of women like this and also puffy faces

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 31/05/2025 16:03

My friend is an alcoholic and I can tell immediately when she’s drinking 🙁. Her face blows up like she’s been stung by a bee and goes red.

SnowMoss · 31/05/2025 16:09

I seem to get something like rosacea in winter/central heating.

Had no idea I looked like a lush!

Me too, I’m also a rosacea sufferer. I usually only have one drink, my face will redden a few sips in (red wine is particularly bad for this). Certain women seem to feel the need to make snide comments about it, hinting I drink too much. I don’t, I’m well under the proposed limit for weekly units. As a younger person these comments would have really upset me, but I’m late 50’s and so I just (internally) judge them and mark them down as nasty, not friend material.

SnowMoss · 31/05/2025 16:14

I also recall the long ago days of my 20's, and one particular boozy summer with lots and lots of wine. My legs were not at all thin by the time autumn swung around!

Isn't the thin leg thing associated with much deeper, dependency/substance related issues? I have seen people of this description but they were severely struggling and unwell - an old lady neighbour of mine many years ago fit this description and wasn't in a good way. She basically wasn't eating any more...

Most professional or highly functioning boozers I've known have never fit that particular, physical description.

There used to be a nineties thing where people in the fashion industry on the controlling side used to talk about "pouilly fuisse" eyes meaning puffiness even after one glass of wine.....but this was the time of "heroin chic" and models allegedly injecting themselves in their feet so they could hide the needle marks.

Take them into a room full of people and get them to identify the regular wine drinkers, bet they can't.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/05/2025 16:44

I'm curious to know why wine drinkers in particular? Why not gin drinkers or beer drinkers or any other kind of drinkers. Nobody who drinks anything to excess ends up looking good. And also, what does regularly mean? My husband and I used to share a bottle of wine every Friday, regular as clockwork, but the rest of the time we didn't drink anything. Hardly excessive but regular nevertheless. I hope you see these people again, OP, to ask them these questions. 😊

The models were absolutely not on heroin. They were extremely skinny and make up was used to make them look more gaunt.
There was probably a lot of coke going around. There still is.
I've never heard of a successful model injecting themselves though.
'Heroin Chic' was a look, not a lifestyle. No normal person could or would have wanted to emulate it either.

Thanks for the thread OP. I took a face picture 1st January. 🙈 yes it is quite different to today.

This made me laugh. I’m a size 6 brunette who reads with wine and gets Botox! I drink a lot of wine but I also lift weights and cycle a lot and eat a lot of salads - I think my body is fine!

I mean it as a compliment though! Re the women anyway, I dont like to get in the habit of complimenting men 😒🤭

I aim to be super thin and sexy and have an extensive wine knowledge! So far, ive just got: drinks wine
