If you're autistic, you might think literally, and if you do, you may have misunderstood this joke!

'To get to the other side.

The chicken isn't literally crossing a dual carriageway. He is crossing as he wants to die. He wants to get hit by a car and die, hence 'going to the other side'.

I wouldn't say 'the other side' automatically means death?! The other side of an argument, the other side of the street...

I'd only associate it with death if that was literally the context. Ie, 'my brother was very ill but then he passed on to the other side'

I wouldn't assume it about a chicken. As they don't think that existentially as far as I know.

It's quite interesting that someone might see it that way though.

I thought the joke was that it was so literal that it was unfunny, which to some makes it funny.

Its like saying why did the chicken go to the shop - to go shopping.

The chicken one is daft though, the “joke” is that there is no joke. The chicken genuinely just wants to get to the other side of the road.

The joke is just about the chicken getting to the other side of the road. Nothing deeper.

I think the joke only really works when the person says 'the other side' in a mystical way ( eg style of Prof Trelawney).

Everything is a sign of autism these days. Even understanding a joke on exactly the same terms that almost everyone else understands the same joke.
